I'm trying to get the lower egts on my 99 dodge 24 valve nv4500. I have the banks monster ram, pusher 3.5 inch hot side inter-cooler hose, bhaf air filter, fass 95gph fuel pump, straight piped exhaust, edge ez tuning set on 2 setting. I am trying to get better fuel millage, i have never pulled anything with it. i travel at 65 to work and my egts are about 600 to 630, how can i get them lower, thanks

  • Yea 37's on 3.55 gives you an effective gear ratio of 3.00:1 out back.  You have to be doing 80 before you have enough RPMS in OD to get the 64mm turbo spinning at any real speed.     Regear

  • When you don't have the mechanical advantage of gearing the motor has to work harder to keep the tires rolling. This effect, combined with the reduced rpms of tall gearing makes for higher load at low

  • Is your EGT issue at cruise or WOT?   If it's at cruise going to a larger turbo will make your cruise EGT issue worse. If its at WOT then a larger turbo will lower your EGTs, to a point.

Wash it out with water...

(Please don't do this it will do damage to a diesel... Just trying to be a bit funny)

This actually can be of value and used if done properly. I would not use liquid water for starters. Steam cleaning is a great way to clean if you suspect buildup.

Second; If KBeckers charger has a 68mm turbine there will be little to no difference going to a 62mm compressor.

stock gearing on 35's and 6 spd i usually get between 650-750 cruising 65.  on setting 5 i can hammer the pedal and peg the boost to 31 and egt hit ~1200-1300 easy, i do that for a second or two at least once when i take it out just to heat it up and clean stuff. most the time im in setting 1

These are the EGT's I get for 80 MPH with stock gearing and 235's.

Quadzilla wide open I can peg 45 PSI of boost and hit 1,400 EGT's (no limits).

I often wonder how long at what temp it takes to help clean out carbon on the pistons and soot from the head. I know my first couple tows in the spring, after not towing all winter, will get some extra soot out the exhaust at 25+ psi and 1100°+ for a minute or two.

i thought i've read somewhere you needed 1200 for a good long while to clean them up. i know i have a 17 mile hill that is 4-7% with most at the 6% grade, and i can't stay at the 1200 EGT's long enough else i'm doing 80+ towing my 13K trailer. (good tuner)

If i grab another gear 6th, then i'm worried about killing the trans.

So I’ve ordered new 4.88 gears, but was curious if with my s364sxe would be best with bigger Injectors, or if I could use it as my big turbo for a compound set up with my stock turbo?

While there are twin turbos that use 2 S300 sized turbos I do no think that a 364 is large enough to be a primary for a 5.9L.

I would get the 4.88's installed and see how it drives, and then go from there.

I under stand the gears will fix the egt issue but somebody mentioned that my 125HP Injectors were too small for my 364 turbo so after I do the gears I’d like to use the turbo to its potential

I'd still wait and see. I believe the comment about them being too small was made in reference to your ability to light the turbo.. that should be a fixed issue with lower gearing.

From there see what your cruise and peak EGT's are, as well as towing.

My 02 has a sticker in the glove box with the rear end type and gears on it. Other info also.

Another way to just check is to mark your driveshaft and the tires. Now rotate the driveshaft until you make one revolution of the tire. The number times the driveshaft spins is going to be your gear ratio. So if you are a bit over 3 and half turns then you've got 3.55 gears. If your barely over 4 turns then you have 4.10 gears.

I think he is trying to determine the axle itself, not the gears.

Should be a Dana 60 front and a Dana 70U rear, IIRC

For occasional towing they will be fine, but they won’t give you the street or highway advantage of 4.88’s.

What’s your hesitation on the 4.88’s?

Was given a quote for a local shop to do the gears and it was pretty steep cuz I have to change the rear case, was hoping if I went to 4.56 I wouldn’t have to change case and save some cash. Well 4.56 and higher I have to break the case so I’ll going to just bite the bullet and do the 4.88ss
