Monday I will be changing the oil for the second time since ownership. I know some send off oil samples.. where do you send it? Is there a sample kit to buy?

I will be doing the Fass fuel filter and water separator for the first time. First question.. Are all the cross referenced filters on one of the pages I see here respectable replacements? Should I pour some fuel into the filter? Will it be difficult to start the truck? Not sure what to expect....

It typically gets deeper in note with more of a grunt sound when its pumping solid fuel.

Hmmm... Guess this needs an article.  Ill do one in a month or so.

In short, fuel filters arent bad.  Dont fill it.  After nee filter and separator...

Priming
 Using proper container to catch fuel loosen fuel filter
and bump starter, may need to do several times, do not
let pump shut off until system is primed
 When the FASS motor changes tone tighten fuel filter

By proper container.. will a bucket do? :-)

The tone is definitely distinctive? The pump shuts off after 20-25 seconds... do I bump the starter again before that if I don't hear a change in tone?

Anything that will catch the fuel. I use my oil change pan.

Bump as needed

I used a bucket and I had the crack a couple injectors loose to get mine started again

I have had to crack some injectors a few times over the years but mostly not. Matter of fact I usually just cycle the lift pump 2 or 3 times and start the engine. If it does die after that then I crack some line open. I have also filled my filter. Just bear in mind that any fuel that goes down the big center hole will be unfiltered. I never let that bother me that bad.

I think everyone's pretty much hit the nail on the head here. I just installed a fass 150 and did everything everyone's already mentioned.

As far as the lift pump tone, you'll know when it's different.

I have been debating installing some kind of a pressure release valve in the top of the factory fuel bowl. That way when I change filters I can just leave the valve open to bleed the air out of the system. I was thinking about using a bolt in valve stem for a truck tire but I dont think the stem grommet or the valve core would hold up to diesel.

My old 98.5 had a little bolt on the top that I would open to bleed it out but the 01 has a different filter bowl that I can't do that anymore.
