Last summer I installed some 7x.009 (100hp) VCO injectors and have only put a couple thousand miles on them, slight upgrade from my previous 60hp VCOs. I have been getting a really loud pinging/panging when the the torque converter is locked and under load. Doesn't happen in 1st or 2nd gear and it clears up around 2000rpm when the turbo is really flowing. It's definitely coming from the motor. Anyone experience this? I was reading about pre detonation and it sounds like it. Only happens under good throttle and almost always up hill under load. Any thoughts?

A knock is just a louder ping.  If the only thing you changed are the injectors and this problem arose then I'd be looking at having them tested / replaced.

  • Maybe when the converter lock, the flexplate cork a little bit and touch those bolts!!!???

Yes, not as pronounced, but yes. Never had this issue with the 60s. I ran the 100s with a WH1C(HX35) turbo and the super b and same scenario with both.

Weird. You shouldn't have enough timing to pre-detonate

I suppose it could, but I've never heard of that symptom. Usually it's just a knock, not a ping.

Just ordered some 7x.009 (100hp) SACs...I'll know this weekend whether injectors are the issue. Might have some injectors up for sale that need to be rebuilt

Finally swapped out injectors for new ones, still pinging and panging under load. Sounds like it's coming from the VP. Any ideas? Only when the torque converter is locked under load. I'm frustrated...

Is there a temp sensor out of wack? Could be effecting the timing. Intake air temp/pressure or coolant temp?

This why I suggest to most to look at the live data first before attempting to guess at sensors... If I pull my tablet this morning and showed some of my screen captures I could show you a wide range of temperatures ECT, IAT and other sensor data that most wouldn't expect.

Is there a possible loose or missing injector line clamp?

I checked the flexplate  through the viewport last year  and didn't see any cracks but I think I'll have to drop the tranny just to make sure. I'm starting to think it's the flexplate.

Well, I think I found the issue. Finally dropped the transmission and at the end of it I had 7 bolts. Some shade tree mechanic left a torque converter bolt stuck in between the flexplate and the engine/trans adapter from the last tranny r&r...idiot!

I'm shipping my converter out to get restalled and have Phil from DPC inspect everything too. It has a 15 written on it, I'm guessing that means 15 blade. Everywhere I look a 15 blade is an ultra low stall, which is way to tight for my liking. Bangs into drive from park, creeps off the line with no throttle, really smokey and laggy off the line.

My questions is, if the bolt was just sitting there loose on the engine/trans adapter, just above the crank, why was it only rattling under lockup? Any input?

Man that's frustrating! No idea why it would only do it on lockup though....
