I have purchased the high idle switch and it is due to deliver today. I have also rented a Smarty from DAP to activate the 3 cylinder high idle mode. Just looking for a few pointers on the install.

I have read the install article: High Idle Install

I know to unhook my batteries prior to install and take my time to ensure I don't bump any other wires that might cause issues down the road. The switch install seems pretty straight forward.

My main questions are with the Smarty. What is the process for enabling high idle?

Plug in Smarty. Does key need to be on?

After plugging in the Smarty I'm lost. Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie.

  • the leds will be drawing power if you power then from an always hot source.     If the LEDs are not connected then no, there will be no draw.

  • As long as you dont have a p0216 code the quadzilla timing value should be pretty close.      I dont know what the reference point is for timing, IE 0* TDC or -30* tdc etc.  I just know how

  • no idea, but they only power the led itself, not the switch.  The switch will work just fine without power.,

Yep,

no harm, it is rare to actually trip a cel as a result of switching modes,  just know it can happen.

Optimal...

Set your high idle mode BEFORE starting. Then after getting started then go ahead and turn back to OFF. You might want to avoid MPG mode till it warms up. MPG mode will RETARD timing so its best to let the ECM control the timing during warm up.

The CEL light trip is because some people turn the knob too slowly and the ECM picks up the fact you broke the circuit for that brief moment so it will trip the CEL. It might also miss the mark and go into 3 CYL mode. Like said above just turn off the engine for 10 seconds and then restart again this will reset the ECM high idle mode.

Be aware high idle mode either 3 or 6 CYL will remain active for the entire key cycle. So next time the condition for high idle occur (ECT < 140*F and IAT < 32*F) it will fire back up in the mode you selected at the start of the key cycle.

Thanks ME and MoparMan, pretty sure I am set. Will install this weekend. Sucks that it gets dark at 530 after work, cant get anything done.

I installed the high idle. Unhooked both batteries prior to install and took my time. I have not flashed the smarty onto my truck yet. After wire install I did an APPS reset with my throttle pedal. Now I have the check engine and gauge lights both on and my thermostat is pegged out.
Below picture is while running.

Double check the ECT connection make sure both connections have locked together. If the ECT lead is OPEN you get the pegged coolant gauge.

I'll check that now. Does it matter if the switch is plugged into the harness? It currently is not plugged in. However high idle has not been flashed on yet.

If the ECT line is open it does matter... It must connect to the sensor one way or another. It doesn't matter if the flash is done or not. You can still use the OFF and MPG mode. The 3 CYL and 6 CYL just will not respond. Again make sure all connection are hooked up the truck will be fine and drive without codes.

Ive been following these high idle  threads

Can you explain what happens in the MPG mode and is it used for getting better fuel mileage or something else?

Must a diablo power puck be unplugged prior to plugging in the smarty?

If yes, it has two locations it plugs in. Do I just unplug both of those and not plug anything into those locations?

I have completed my install and tested the high idle. All works as it should. Very easy to install and plenty of loom for the location I installed my switch at. I did not unplug the power puck. Also my check engine light is no longer on, it must have been due to not having the switch plugged in.

Question: After starting a vehicle in 3cyl high idle mode, how long does it take for the various stages to kick in?

Mine was idled up to 1200 RPM's roughly two minutes after starting and running in 3cyl mode.

Simply... It fools the IAT to a higher temperature to imitate summer conditions which retards the timing. Excessive timing tends to pull the MPG's down.

Then why the hell haven't I bought one of these yet? Lol.

They are 10% off until 12/31.

@Mopar1973Man does this switch draw any current, say if it's left in MPG mode for a mouth will it drain batterys

the leds will be drawing power if you power then from an always hot source.

If the LEDs are not connected then no, there will be no draw.

That makes sense since it's resistors that do foolling,  reason I asked is truck sat for few weeks with switch set to mpg went to start it this morning and noticed battery voltage was 11.8 (before starting) where normally it's above 12. It's probably from not being used enough.
