Tidbits...

Max timing is 32° BTDC.

Optimal fuel pressure 14 to 20 PSI

Filtration should be 3 micron.

Double stacking filters is a good thing.

Most error codes are electrical failures.

P0216 code is typically mechanical failure and not capable of meeting commanded timing.

Some good info there, some issues as well.

Biggest thing is no you should not stack timing boxes.  while he is right you can't "overtime" the collar in the pump you can command too much timing at a given point in time.  IE 30* of timing at 1200 rpm = poorly running truck.

the thing he didnt know what it was is the fueling solenoid

the thing he called the fueling solenoid is the timing solenoid

The biggest issue with the vp is a p0216 code or a stuck timing piston due to bad fuel /low fuel pressure or old age.  over heating isn't a huge issue with the vp now days.

It's been my experience that VP stands for Very Prolific rather than Very Poor.  They would never have gotten such a bad rep if the importance of fuel pressure was understood up front.  Most learn about fuel pressure after they have kill one...or two and then blame the crappy VP.

If I had not read all the horror stories and only went off my own experience I would have thought the VP is a great pump...all the while supplying lots of power when needed and driving like a stock truck while not flogging it.

I have never seen what all the fuss was about.

between the video and post here I know more than I did last week about the magical box that fuels the oil burner.

But Even if the VP has been known to be problematic, stuffs out there to fix the issues. every truck of any brand is gunna have issues. This truck is just a fuel or electronic gremlin.

Still, glad to have bought a truck with an easily drivable an tunable pump regardless of location and climate i find myself in.

Other tidbits...

Bosch requires fuel lubricity to be 460 HFRR or less. Since ULSD was released the lubricity went up to roughly 520 HFRR. The only fuel that meets the requirement is BioDiesel. BioDiesel comes at increased price over Petri diesel. Then typically has a warmer pour point and telling issues. Then BTU content is much lower compared to petro diesel.
