Please Help!! I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500. It has a 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. The problem occurs when engine is cold. I thought it was only in winter like now. But it also happens in summer just not half as bad. when engine is first started cold I get white smoke out of exhaust and it stumbles for about a minute in summer. And if left unplugged (engine block heater) in winter it will smoke bad and stumble for like 5minutes!! Then when it warms up enough to drive it wont go above like 20 30 maybe 40mph for like 2miles or more. Seems like until engine reaches a certain temp.?? Anyway then finally everything will kick in and truck will run and drive great!! I was told by a couple people that the problem is the Turbo Wastegate. I think it mite be more than that?? Can someone please give me some real answers before I start tearing things apart and possibly replacing the wrong things???? Thanks Very Much in advance!!!!

  • Timothy, every one of us have gone thru the exact same scenario that you are going thru. We have all had the modify our trucks to keep them going for the long haul by taking care of the 4 items above.

  • Tim, All I can do is commiserate.  You have the exact same symptoms my brother did, with the only exception you got the P0216!  He never got a code.  Talk about being unsure of ourselves.  Once d

I've never used it on anything with out a CEL on but everything that I did use it on found the code that tripped the CEL and was able to reset it.  They do work.  Even the cheap one.  I figured it would be a cheap alternative instead of taking it to a shop.  :spend:

Its worth a try.

Can you cycle ignition 3times on 01 to flash codes across odometer display?

02 does I'd try it on a 01

The later 01's will work, the earlier 01's only read one computer and not both.

Just best to skip that method unless you have a 2002 then it works correctly.

98.5 - doesn't work

99 - doesn't work

00 - may work but only PCM codes.

01 - may work PCM only typically late 01 might have the early 02 software.

02 will report both ECM and PCM correctly.

Mopar1973Man. Should I purchase the OBDLINK LX??

Yeah, get the LX. That's what I have and it works great. The MX has special features that allow it to read codes on some special Ford ans GM applications. LX is good for Dodge, and if I can set it up you can.

That is what I will get when I change over. If @dave110 can do it I can. Not very electronically savy my self.

There is an adjuster on the tie rod that runs from the pitman arm to the rod end. I'm not sure of the correct terminology (barrell adjuster)? It has 2 pinch clamps on it. Look at it and see which way you need to turn it. One end is RH thread and one is LH thread. Since your'e that far off give it a full turn and go for a drive, come back, re-adjust and repeat. When you get close it doesn't take much of a turn to move the wheel a little bit.

There is a expert function to the OBDLink where you can use Bluetooth terminal and call commands to the computers (PCM and ECM).

I didn't know that. How do you access it? What all can be done on our trucks. I've already had a friend turn off injectors and turn on electric fans a such on one of my cars but we don't have any of that stuff.

It's #6 in these pics.

Well mine is supposed to be here tomorrow!! Hope when I get out of work it is here and I can get it going and figure out whats up with my truck!! The weather here in Buffalo seems to be taking a little break from the winter storm we had last week. So hopefully I can get outside this weekend and get it done!! Im pretty excited to see what this thing can do!!!!

Good deal.

Was in Tioga PA last week and got a shot of that early winter storm. Not too often we see low teens and high 20's in November.

Just remeber the lx will read the codes and the diagnostics are listed here. It is not just going to spit out a magic bullet. But it is a very useful device to help find the problem and can be used on many vehicles.

Why are you selling?

Did you ever cycle the key.

You may be able to read codes for free.

I do know I've been unable reset codes with a snapon and mac scanner. My truck is wheeerd 2002 doesnt trip a check engine light even when injection pump went out. Not sure I've ever seen a check engine light.

Thanks for your idea!! I believe u are talking about doing that at Autozone or wherever they have a reader that only works with CEL on. Am I correct?? Anyway I got the OBDlink lx andi believe got the codes I need!! Now I just need to know where to begin to fix the problems!!! And what the actual problems are?? As far as a CEL I haven't seen mine on ever either!!! Which hopefully is a good thing!! lol

Full diagnostic documents for your codes. Corrected definitions.

Mopar1973Man thanks again for your help!! First of all I cant believe that both of our ideas are the problem?!?! You said fuel problem and I said turbo problem!!!! This is crazy!!! These explanations are not in plain enough English for me to comprehend fully!! lol. But from what I do understand is that I may need to replace Wastegate.(possibly complete Turbo)? And may have to replace Fuel Injection Pump?? Am I correct Sir?? Where do u suggest I start with this caos???? Thanks!! PS: What is DTC???? lol
