Hello. My truck died suddenly and now it's only cranking. Got a P1688 code and looks like vp44 computer is toasted. I found a company which repairs vp44 psgs. Now I'm wondering do I have to cut the wires if I remove psg from top of the vp or can I take the solenoid apart from the distributor end? Thanks and Greetings from Finland!

Glad you got it fixed, can't imagine owning one of those trucks overseas, especially now with all the BS in the world.

@Tractorman You are very welcome. Glad to give something back to this great forum. I've driven 50 miles now without issues. The hardest thing was to solder the wires back when the pump is in it plac

All can be removed.

Fuel solenoid is 3 screw. Then the plug will be released from the solenoid.

Timing solenoid can be removed. Remove the screw and pull the solenoid valve out of the body.

Fuel temp and tach signal can be removed. Two screws and carefully remove the sensor.

How tight fitting fuel solenoid is? Any special tools needed? I called the rebuild company and they said that just cut solenoid wires with pliers and solder wires when installing psg back. Not so good idea to cut wires in vp pump:doh:. But now I know that I can take the whole psg package out and no need to cut the wires.

A company takes 230€, that's close to 280$ for diagnosing and repairing the psg. I have to check this card because ordering new vp44 from USA would cost lots of $$ and shipping old core back is expensive too.

No need to cut any wires. Like I said just 3 screws and the plug will come apart from the fuel solenoid.

You can see both fuel solenoid on the bottom and the timing solenoid above. Nothing to cut period.

Putting some air pressure in the inlet port before removing the top can help push out a stuck solenoid. If the shop is going to put in a new mosfet transistor instead of a whole new psg cutting wires could be safer than trying to force out a stuck soleniod and breaking it.

Had to cut wires, wires were stripped close to psg. Maybe that has toasted the psg. When I get psg back have to solder the wires correctly and put some heatshrink tube. If that doesn't help next step is new pump! If it goes to that, what brand vp44 you all recommend??

Still would not of cut the wires. Exposed wires will always degrade faster even with shrink tube. Just think even the factory ground splices are sealed in shrink tube and glued ends. Still we all do the W-T ground mod.

I know. Psg could be so toasted that it can't be saved. Just found out that 50 miles from here is Bosch certified diesel shop and they promised to rebuild the whole pump for 1300$ if the other shop can't wake up the psg.

Truck is running fine and no codes. They found faulty part in psg and replaced it, on year warranty. Next time it dies it's time for whole new pump.

One issue left, my quadzilla acts weird. It takes time before it connects abd after that every sensor is 0 but coolant is -40°F.

1300 for a rebuild is HIGH. Might look at Diesel Auto Power. They carry the reman'ed pumps for much less also by a certified Bosch rebuilder.

I've been watching this closely, $1300 is way better than getting one from the USA as it would be higher than 1300 just to get the pump here once cost of pump, shipping, duty and Vat are factored in then as the guy says either the core has to be paid or return the old pump.... more cost.

I'd guess around $1800 to $2000 all done to get a replacement from the USA

I just got a box of closeout stuff from Rock.... nothing heavy, shipping well over twice the cost of whats in the box, and the box was the size of an unfolded laptop

I roughly calculated that vp44 is 1200-1500$, shipping close to 100$, VAT 24% of the whole price and 4.5% goes to customs here in Finland. So it can be over 2000$ before I have the pump in my hand.

Just about what I figured, here in the UK our Vat is 20% though, If you don't mind me asking who repaired the PSG as It would be handy to bookmark a website for that, never know if there's anyone here in the uk that would do it until you need it done
