Ok, so I got rid of my 24V with headaches, and apparently picked up a 12V with someone else's headaches.. So, out of the frying pan, into the fire.I've been working out some kinks on this '97. I test drove it last friday, and from what I recall, it seemed to be fine.. Unless I didn't notice it (my fault for lack of due-diligence.)At any rate, the issue (for this thread) is the transmission.Story goes: 2 owners ago, dude bought a Jasper trans, installed it, killed it, warrantied it, killed that one, warrantied it, killed it, then Jasper said "this is your last one."so he pulled the 5spd from this '97, installed the Jasper auto in it, and stuck the 5 speed into the truck that he was using to kill transmissions. However, he did a ____-poor job, and sold it to last owner, who killed the poorly/improperly incomplete install in short order. So he took it to a diesel trans guy in MD, who rebuilt the Jasper trans using triple disc TC, red clutches, kevlar bands, HD valve body, etc. (parts from HTS Diesel).Installed a PCM (to replace a non-existant one) and rewired everything, so to speak, or so the story goes.Fast forward to me.. ( I don't need any "I told you so" type stuff, because I know. Believe me, I know.. One word: Wife. )I drove it home last friday, and all seemed well, although I did notice it seemed to rev a little higher to get it moving.. Granted, I'm new to autos, as my '01 was a manual, and the '96 before that, was manual, so I'm somewhat rusty on how they perform/react. Thought maybe the TC had a little higher stall.Last night, my 7 y.o. daughter wanted to ride around the block in the new dually.. Wish granted. That's when I noticed that something wasn't quite right... No low/1st gear engagement. Neither with shifter in D, or if I manually drop it to L (1), nothing, nada.. it seems to stay in 2nd gear or so.. I will add that if in D, at a stop, let off the brake and the truck starts to creep forward.. give a little throttle and drop it into 2nd, it feels to almost 'drop' a gear, as the forward progress seems to be a more positive engagement, but still no 1st. Driving 30mph, slow prepare for a stop sign, drop lever to 2, it downshifts.. drop to 1 from like 10mph, no gear change/drop occurs.. it stays in 2nd..TC lockup and such works, and with the 4.10s, 60-65mph yeilds about 1900-2000rpm.The Coolant Temp Sensor circuit is fubar somewhere, as is the tach in the I/C. The tach does read through the scan gauge, however, so the Crank Position Sensor seems to be operational.I was told this trans has a 3/36 warranty, but getting that info is proving to be a tad on the tough side..Trans looks fresh, complete with gray paint, Jasper stickers, etc., so it was apparently rebuilt in the Jasper case.Help. I need to troubleshoot this as inexpensively as I can, for obvious reasons.

Let me guess...... NOT 'billet' looking on the other side is it. Probably a stock converter.

Actually it is a billet. Stamped on the front is 1111 44 SINGLE. S1802Sent from my rooted and Android-ROM'd HP Touchpad (CM9)

Man, Rogan that sucks! I had a similar thing happen. Bought my 02 with the build sheet of suncoast parts in the auto... Turns out a mom and pop shop did a stock rebuild on it. I thought about a suit on the deadbeat seller, but I am pretty sure he would have skipped the state had I done so.

Well, it's whipped me.. Really sucks, too, because I wanted to find the problem and fix it, if nothing more than for just to say I did it..Tomorrow, my friend and I venture out on a 19hr round-trip to South Carolina to pick up a salvage-titled '97 Dodge SCLB DRW 4x4 with a 5 speed.I got a killer deal on it, so I'm gonna swap trans stuff into mine, stuff my 47RE into the salvaged one, and sell it to a farmer for a farm truck. (he's already asked about it :) )Maybe I can get my money back out of it..

You may not have fixed it, but you stuck with it and figured it out. I was looking at the first post, you've been dealing with this problem for over a year! :wow: I gotta commend you on a job well done, Rick.

Well, that sucked royally. We drove 500mi, towing a trailer, to outaide Spartanburg, SC monday to get the truck. Got there to only find out the truck mysteriously was "stolen" before we arrived. After a 3hr search around town and such, we ended up coming home empty handed. So no 5spd for me.So now I ran across a gentleman that works for thoroughbred diesel in Kentucky. He's got a built 47re and TCI triple disk for sale as he just finished his 4500 swap.He snapped his input shaft so ill reuse mine. He pulled the pan and no signs of shavings or parts in the fluid. He has the build sheet too. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

That really SUCKED! Undoubtedly somebody came along & bought it out from under you. They guy should have called you but somepeoble are just slime. Maybe you lucked out with a better setup after all. Hope so.

Congrats on finding a better deal.

I'd much rather had a 4500 but whatever. Hopefully this works out because it, too, is 7hrs each way. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Sunday morning, around 530-600am, I took the wife's van and started on my 480mi. trip to Winchester, KY and picked up a 47RE that was lightly built but had a broken input shaft. The guy was really awesome, very honest, and just a good ol' country boy at heart. He let me disassemble the trans right there in the shop to verify the broken shaft and to see if anything else needed attention. He also gave me the option of his lightly built 47 or a bone stock IVGC 90k mile 47re that came out of a 99 and was replaced with a Goerend. After investigating the innerds of the trans (he was a little shocked that I had it disassembled and splayed out in 20 minutes), I opted for his trans, as well as his TCI 3-disk converter. After some numbers discussions and cash changing hands, we loaded it into the van. He also threw in a brand new Hughes Performance deep sump pan, filter adapter, new pan gasket, big trans cooler, 3000psi -AN fitting hydraulic lines to replace the steel ones, and knocked a hundred dollars off the trans price.I made the return trip home, arriving around midnight. 7am Monday morning, I started the tear-down and parts swapping to repair his trans ( swapped input shafts, and also installed my modded valve body). Got it all installed, buttoned up and fluids filled (including changing the tcase fluid) around 7-730 last evening. Maiden voyage was surprising. trans shifted quite firm, and as expected, thusfar. Lockup can occur in 1st with a flip of a toggle. However, it's a little unpredictable. With the toggle off, the trans shifts pretty good. Getting onto the highway, 2nd gear shifts around 1800, 3rd gear around 17-1800, then OD around 35-40mph. Lockup HITS HARD around 40-45. When this occurs, the truck lurches forward with ferocity. At speed, 65mph in LU shows to be around 2200rpm; that's lower than before. There is no rpm flash or flare with variations in throttle, once lockup is established (the old TC would flash easily when doing this.)I unfortunately didn't take many pictures at all of this stuff, as I was on a mission. I wish I did, but oh well..I'll report back this week on how it seems to do. I MAY swap VBs this weekend, by putting his mostly stock VB in, and see what difference there is between the two (minus the obvious stuff).

Congrats. now youll be looking for reasons to go take it for a drive.:thumb1::thumb1:

I'm really contemplating putting the stock vb back in to see how the trans acts. It still does the stupid early shifting.Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Early shifting could be the TPS. You may need to pull the sleeves out of the mounting holes to change the shift points enough.

1-2 is controlled by the governor pressure solenoid.
