Well back when my ex and I were splitting I let someone else (a local big Trailer sales and service place) repack my bearings on my horse trailer as I had other things on  my front burner and they needed to be done... I will let the pictures speak for themselves....post-1978-0-49361500-1421032404_thumb.jppost-1978-0-32790800-1421032418_thumb.jppost-1978-0-14068100-1421032433_thumb.jppost-1978-0-50104200-1421032447_thumb.jppost-1978-0-62643300-1421032461_thumb.jppost-1978-0-15321500-1421032476_thumb.jp

I cleaned the old bearings in some Colman fuel but alas, the bearings are toast and need to buy new onespost-1978-0-61796800-1421032490_thumb.jppost-1978-0-64380600-1421032504_thumb.jppost-1978-0-08019500-1421032519_thumb.jp

Same here I rather do the work myself. So far if I screw up I've only got myself to blame. As for someone else screws up now you got to prove it and hopefully get it resolved.

Been way too long to take it back to get it resolved..... I will just fix it and be done with it and know it is done the right way!! :thumb1:

Dang that's a mess!  The only guy I let touch my vehicles is my mechanic.  He's not great, but if something goes wrong I can blame him and he'll fix it or buy a new one.  Though that hasn't stopped me from wanting to fire him, only real reason I haven't is I'm the only one I have.   :lol2:

Yuck!!

How long ago was it done?

Bad seals?

I tend to agree the axle stub does look like its taken water in a few times. The grease don't even look good. I typically use the red high temp grease.

Looks like water intrusion to me, so it may not be the fault of the installers.

I do most my own maintenance as well, but stuff happens outside of procedural error.

X2 on Johns post ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Although I have seen a lot of folks reuse seals on wheel bearing hubs which could have been the issue. Make sure the seals fit the spindle and that the seal area is not rusted or pitted or damaged, I have seen some seals get installed too far or not far enough and totally miss the seal surface of the spindle too or even a hub change out that was a different dimension.

baling twine.     That stuff  on-the-farm  is  the  most evil  "everywhere you look"   stuff  ever to be brought onto a  farm.      If it turns, rotates, spins,   I guarantee  some of that  crap is   wrapped up on it..  and  has  destroyed the seal.   It's like a magnet..     And   we are not  exactly driving in the most  sanitary conditions either!

I've  recently switched to Mobil Delvac  grease.     Before,  I was  using    Conoco Super-sta  #2      I really like how well the  Mobil is   'staying' in  worn bushings/bearings  a lot  longer.. it's  really clingy.

It was done several years back however, less that 3500 miles have been put on the Horse trailer...The ex got the 3500 24v (the dumbass traded it for a Hyundai Sante Fe  ) and my 1500 isn't the right truck to pull the trailer (except in a pinch) the trailer has been sitting :( (and not in water..lol) The seal looked good and looks as if they forgot to do the one wheel because the others don't look bad.. Remember this is a Horse trailer and not a boat trailer.. I have never driven it in water, and as far as I can recall it hasn't been driven in the rain once since the bearings were repacked by the trailer company...

Rancherman it wasn't bailing twine  :)  This horse trailer has been on road only and never out in the field   And I am OCD when it comes to bailing twine!! I save a few strands for fixes but the rest goes in the garbage ASAP!!

But I do agree with the water intrusion, I knew that the moment I took the cap off....

I just went through the same thing with my gooseneck trailer, left rear hub had a little water in it. Pressed new races in and packed bearings but the dang thing was still running almost hot when I pulled it a few days ago.

Went over to Redneck Trailer Supply and picked up a new Bearing set :thumb1:  Not thrilled  that they are made in china but they were the only ones that had the right bearings and seal in stock... Any way I ended up using the old races for knock in tools, just ground them down enough on the bench grinder enough so that they wouldn't get stuck in the hub :thumb1:  Worked awesome!!

According to my buddy Floyd Lloyd Manual Labor (as I call him...lol) I also apparently made some homemade hooch by accident...lol I had my buddy go empty a cooler that had been sitting behind the trailer since July and he found that the bottle of Juice turned into hooch :thumb1:post-1978-0-93431800-1421350185_thumb.jp He asked if I wanted to try some and I said "Hell no" you drink it if you want, that has been sitting in that cooler since July"... Well he did :duh:  post-1978-0-80787600-1421350127_thumb.jp

After he had been here a few hours and didn't get sick, he did talk me into taking a small glass jar of it to "maybe" try a bit later...  I called him about 9:30 to see if he was still feeling ok... Since he was and said it had a pretty good kick, I drank my little jar of accidental hooch... I'll be darned, it was actually really good!!! :thumb1: Thinking I might have to make some on purpose now :ashamed:  :thumb1:

Haha, That's great!

During the summer, the baler broke down on us so I had to fix and swap a different baler pickup on.  In doing so I found some lemonade that had been sitting in the back seat of my truck for at least a week...  I didn't realize that and took a swig.   Dang, that was MY jug of lemonade!!!  Till someone took it away until I got done with the baler....
