  1. Does anyone else experience their transmission shifting into reverse uncomfortably hard while in low range? Mine shifts great in high, but 2 is pretty hard. Is this in part due to my low stall torque converter? Will installing a upgraded valve body make this worse?
  2. How does the faulty pump allow for loss of engine oil?
  3. I don't understand why you guys are focused on the number of mechanical gears are in my transmission? I have a twin disc billet t/c and my lock up is as solid as the 1,2,3 shifts. Then there is overdrive. I tried to upload a video to YouTube but wouldn't load. Maybe it will from home with wifi. Sorry if the rest if you have a whimpy lockup. :banghead:
  4. Thanks, but maybe I need to take a video. I have a definite 5 speeds when I go through the gears. Does anyone else?
  5. I have 1,2,3, lock up and overdrive. Effectively 5 speed transmission. :moon:Am I the only one who can feel my truck to through 5 shift points?
  6. Have no trouble finding overdrive (5th gear). - - - Updated - - - Have no trouble finding overdrive (5th gear).
  7. 23' trailer. Not sure about grade %, but I doubt I'd make it into more than 3rd gear for short time. 25mph is a nice leasurly speed while towing in second gear high range, so 4th or 5th should do that in low range.
  8. Is it true that our auto transmissions don't reach full cooling capacity until lockup in 4th gear? I have not got my Posi-lock installed yet and I doing a tow with my travel trailer this weekend. So when going up a paved steep road that would normally be in second gear for a few miles. Should I disconnect the vacuum line and run in 2 wheel drive low range in 4th or 5th gear for optimum cooling of transmission? I don't have a Trans temp gauge yet to monitor.
  9. Yep, dim lights almost always are a function of a bad ground. Lots of experience with trailer lights. Can effect other lights too if on the similar circuits.
  10. A lot of rot. Probably will deduct value for anything other than firewood.
  11. Did we ever figure out if there is to be any kind of discount for forum members?
  12. Yeah, I'll drive 400 miles to do that. :banghead:
  13. What about something simple like a disc brake backing plate that's contacting the rotor?
  14. Yeah, I love boondocking. I hunt and have packgoats, so we try to get about as remote as we can. Slowly setting set up for longer periods of time and colder weather.Fresh water is my biggest limitation. Any ideas of how to remedy this? I've got a 30 gallon fresh water tank. Mostly for doing dishes and flushing toilet. I can dump grey water without too much guilt. But what do you guys do to replenish fresh water? I used to have a plastic bucket and a pump that I could pump water into from a campground hand pump well water supply. But the best we could do in the woods is a stream. I can go 4-5 days without being overly conservative with water.
  15. No bear. My buddy got a crack at a good one, but missed.
  16. Here is a picture of the camping spot we had during our memorial weekend bear hunt in the Oregon coast range. As you can see the topography is steep, just not thousands of feet deep. Thats my truck and trailer. Probably not a pic for truck of the month, but maybe camping spot of the month. Also my first pic posting on the forum.
  17. Might be best to take out the radiator and take it to a shop for cleaning and flushing and pressure testing. What's a new radiator cost?
  18. If there is puke in the radiator fins, can you clean it out without removing the radiator?
  19. That's why I want to do the posi-trak manual front axle engagement modification. When on hardball that's steep I would prefer low range 2 wheel drive. Plus will make 3 point turns on gravel roads easier. No front end hop and stress on front axle components.
  20. Logging road in BLM and industrial forest.
  21. The hard part is finding load range D with 14" rims. Very limited selection.
  22. Just to clearify. I was towing 7,000#, going uphill on a paved road that was much steeper than typical roads. Like a 40 degree angle road. Was going uphill for 5 total miles in second gear. I'd of been using low range if I had the Posi Trak conversion made for 2 wheel drive low range. But being paved I didn't. Last leg of steep road was maybe a mile. Fan clutch works fine. No problems with overheating on hiway roads which were 55 mph roads.
  23. On the final leg of my journey to our campsite while towing my travel trailer the engine temperature climbed up to about 220. The mark between 190 and 240 on the dash gauge. We were on a paved road, so no low range 4x4 was utilized. The grade was very steep and I was in second gear at about 2,000 RPM's. When I got to the top the temp reading for the engine was about 220. Smelled hot too. No gauges to monitor EGT's, etc so I cannot comment on that. So I put the truck in neutral and ran up the RPM's to about 1,500 until it came back to normal operating temp. Is this typical or should I be looking for an issue?
  24. Just did a 400 mile round trip with my 22' travel trailer. The tires are original cheap 2 ply with 32 psi max inflation. Not happy about taking it offroad as we did to a bear hunting camp location on a landing overlooking a clear cut. Absolutely great spot for privacy and beauty. We could sit in camo chairs and glass for bears, deer and elk. Anyway, my question. Obviously with some 6 ply or greater offroad LT tires I'd get better braking traction and puncture resistence. We were lucky and didn't get a flat. But could I also expect a slight increase in fuel economy with tires inflated to say 55#? Sidewalls on current tires roll quite a bit when turning and puncture inevitable. 7,000 GVW trailer. Great success with the tow vehicle as well! The vehicle has a canopy that's 14" above cab height. 17 mpg while freeway driving. Fuel pump never fell below 15 psi. Kept the speed at 55 mph or less. Avoiding shift downs as much as possible. Combined fuel milage of 13.5 which included hiway and low/high range 4x4 work on forest roads. Forgot to add that this mpg was partial hiway with trailer, and a lot of running around in the woods without the trailer.1,000 watt Honda generator kept batteries topped off well when we ran it in the evenings. Furnace came on a few times at night. This was the first boondocking trip I've made with this trailer. Everything worked great! Rained a bunch. Was nice to be dry, have hot water and a dry place to both sleep and socialize. Awning was very useful too. Camp chairs outside stayed dry and is nice to have more room to escape the trailer space and stay dry.
