Fuel Economy with the ToyHauler.
I'd be happier with heavier spring bars. But at this point, it's a pig in a poke... When I get the truck back & the ground firms up... There's a truck stop scale at I95 entrance. I ought to weight the truck and then, put the truck on with the trailer off... ought to give tongue weight. This will work, right? Then maybe a truck & trailer weight. (I can subtract to get the trailer weight.)

Thanks guys... Sometimes it's hard to deal with the frustration... I'm even learning a whole new vocabulary of frustration. *&^%$#@! See!!

Frustrations
Hey, thanks a lot. The problem is guessing when the need will crop up. I'll keep it in mind.I think it's the frustration of discovering an increased disability. That's the thing about MS. As it progresses... you figure out work arounds & adapt to a limitation... about the time you catch your breath emotionally, you get hit with something new. It's nobody's fault & I've left no stone unturned as far as slowing it down. It's just how it is.I do appreciate the support.Russ

Frustrations
I got my wires soldered to the IAT extension harness. It was very frustrating. Nothing wrong with the tools or the work... just my friggin' MSed up hands!! I kept dropping things, pliers, solder, hot soldering iron (fortunately the hot tip missed my leg)... and when I held them I couldn't manipulate them as I needed to. I ended up propping the soldering iron on the bench, twisting the wires together as best I could... clamping them with forcepts & taking the work to the heat. I've not done much soldering in quite a few years. I KNOW how... It's just so discouraging to not be able to do something I used to be able to do. Russ

I went out to the trailer to check. The WD hitch spring bars are marked 10,000#, 750# tongue weight.

I'm not sure of the model... came with the trailer. It is one of the heavy duty ones. The hitch part that goes into the reciever is solid.

Eaz-lift. http://www.eaz-lift.com/eazlift/Instructions/Elite_Instructions.pdf (2) 50 gallon water tanks. Rear one is mosltly over the rear axle. Front tank is right in front of it... but ends up being mostly in front of axles. Grey & black tanks are forward.

Guess my single electric scooter... and it is a big outdoor scooter... isn't heavy enough! Yeah, kind of looks lost in there. I don't think I can get the tailgate down with the TH. If I have the gooseneck horse trailer exactly straight, I could lower the gate & crawl under the gooseneck. To be truthful, I never thought about an extended hitch but I'm sure it's NOT a good idea with a Weight Distributing hitch. When I hauled hay on my landscaper's trailer... I needed to run with the gate down. I could get it down but not turn without hitting the jack... I unbolted the jack the first year. By the second year, I'd bought a side swing jack & mounted it next to the platform at the base of the A. I bought a bearing & extended the handle to the side of the platform. I also filled in the open A frame with expanded metal grate. When we were unloading hay, we'd drop the conveyor on the trailer. After the trailer was empty, someone would stand on the A platform pulling hay off the truck & feeding someone loading the conveyor.

MPG fooler - Design phase
Thanks, ISX, One picture is worth a thousand words... Now I know which wire to cut! Russ --- Update to the previous post... "snip" Documenting for those who come after: I note that the connector is marked "A" & "B" leads in your really great photo. My aftermarket piece also has the A B marking although it is good light & reading glasses fine. The B lead is + so that is what I cut. Warming up the soldering iron now. Thanks again, Russ

NOPE, the wires in the IAT extension harness is not color coded... just 2 black wires. --- Update to the previous post... Anybody help me out here? (I guess I'm being OCD about this.) Orientating according to the locking tab, which wire is +? Thanks, Russ

stock in tank lift pump?
There wasn't a recall. If there was a fuel pump failure, the dealer fix (the only one possible as dealers no longer had acess to the on-engine pumps) was to retrofit the intank pumps. Too bad DC did not go for an aftermarket style remote pump. The VP44 may or may not have been replaced, depending on whether it failed too. Can you access the dealer records?

MPG fooler - Design phase
Do I need to determine polarity of each lead in the extension harness? Both wires are black. Or is there a way to tell from the plug orientation? I don't have the truck here right now to go check. I'm thinking since resistors are not, that the (variable resisitor) OEM sensor would not be either... but I don't want to @SS UM E anything.I would like to have this ready when the truck comes back from the shop.

MPG fooler - Design phase
I received my IAT extension marked Caspers Electronics #109017 "MAT Air Temp Senser Extension". The end fittings are exactly as you would expect of a professional item. The 2 individual conductors are fine wire... perhaps in the 20 gauge range. It's only a sensor harness but I guess I expected something heavier gauge. It wasn't cheap but the point is to have a solid weatherproof connection. I don't want to add resistance in my IAT fooler cable so I'll up size some. I'm not sure how much wire length I need... and extra slack in case it's needed. (The last time my dash came out the workers didn't release the zip ties on my accessories & yanked some of the wires out. IDIOTS! I'm thinking of putting the switch in the driver's knee panel. I want to be able to access it on start up.

Who can beat this for a stupid move
Not lately.I was engaged to my ex... things went sour. I married her anyway. Gotta be the bone head move of my lifetime.Another one that comes to mind...I was sent to get parts from the "big city"... I took my 68 RoadRunner. It was pouring. The street drains could not handle the run off. I got back on I95 only to discover a flooded underpass. Water was pouring over the retaining wall like Niagra Falls. The extreem left lane was getting through. I worked my way over there... DUMB MOVE. The guy in front of me did not make it. I was committed... tried to go around him & did not make it. I actually restarted it with water inside over the front seat... but after driving out, I stopped to open the door to let the water out.I was towed off I95. There was water in the oil, transmission, rear end, trunk. The carpets were moldy despite being shop vacced & a dehumifier running in there. I cleaned it up but the rust took hold of the body.

As I posted earlier: "I had to figure out the load distributing hitch as there were some parts missing when we picked it up. It was one scary drive home with the new purchase. NOW, I've got the truck's front wheels back on the ground!" The seller brought out wrenches & helped us. We DID hook up the WD hitch... on the trip home from NH it was all I could do to keep it in our lane... just too little steering ground contact. I felt like I was taking my life in my hands by trying to run 50-55. I knew something was not right. I did my own research before taking it somewhere. I discovered that there should have been a shim pack to adjust the angle of the hitch (and thus the pressure on the WD bars). I brought up the hitch on line http://www.eaz-lift.com/eazlift/Instructions/Elite_Instructions.pdf I substituted a wheel stud and flat washers for the shim pack and spent quite a bit of time trying shim combinations until I got the adjustment right. With the hitch angle right, we were able to connect the chains (it ain't easy) Once I figured out the links, I put a colored zip tie on the correct chain link... that is where it goes. Period. There is a lot of pressure on the bars. Incidentally, in my reading about Weight Distributing hitches, I found articles by experiences users. The article describes measuring the height of the truck from the fender cutout over each tire to the ground. Then hook up the trailer. Ideally, each should have settled equal distance. I believe all the tires are the same size... I'll have to check each one for load rating & TP before towing it. It is a good tip to check for hot tires & bearings. I've always done so on my trailers.

MPG fooler - Design phase
I have found that my overhead is right on (I'll have to verify by hand calc. after I get my XZT+ installed). I've never found the instant readout to be useful... at least not how I drive when light. It swings up & down with every slight incline... so I guess it's working, but just not useful. There's a 2-3 second delay. You have to go down the road & if the road has an incline, you have to go up it. Well, I suppose you don't but I really resent those drivers who pull out & refuse to touch the GO pedal & force others to BRAKE to keep from hitting them. (Nothing wrong with a brief / moderate accelleration.)My "ave mpg" setting works very well & matches hand calculated mpg exactly. The interesting thing is that the overhead average will drop instantly on a cold start... after 10-20 miles it will be back up to previous average. If this reflects the "instant mpg" accurately, it must be very rich to suck the AVERAGE down 1-2/10ths. If the IAT fooler works as expected, throwing the IAT switch after a few minutes hopefully will lean the mix instantly. I have hilly terain in the run off my house, so not possible to test with the instant mpg setting. I am making the leap of faith that the cumulative of the instant readings = the ave mpg. I should receive the IAT extension cable today. I have my fixed 2.2k resistor soldered across the switch up position. Anxious to get to it.

Fuel Economy with the ToyHauler.
The Toy Hauler is parked near the barn. It'll be a month or more... first melt the snow piles then wait for the ground to firm up. I have to drive it out over the "lawn". In the Spring mud season, vehicles have been sunk... in fact I have sunk vehicles. In the mean time, I checked the label which is still there. The "vehicle weight" on the (Salvage) title is 6000. CVWR 10,400UVW 6,220Water 833 “100 gal tank cap”LP gas 67CCC 3,180Mixed brand tires 225/75R15 trailer ~ 2850 @ 80 psi on the one I could get to. That should give about a tire capacity of 11K#. The previous owner had a blowout which he explained was the reason for some wheelwell damage/repair.I've been reading on trailer tires. Might the mixed brand tires be a factor in the towability of this rig? I hate to spend $100 a tire if I don't have to but if it makes the difference, I'll look like a Genious!

MPG fooler - Design phase
I don't have scan gauges so I'm going with a fixed 2.2K resistor which I just soldered across the contacts on a DPDT switch. I've been through my wire assortment & not finding a nice 3 wire harness... so I guess I'll be picking some fresh wire up. (Amazing with all the wire I have around here... not what I want.) The extension harness shipped yesterday from Caspers. It's coming together.

Fuel Economy with the ToyHauler.
The axles under my old 5th wheel were very centered... I got rid of it before I took the C30 off the road since that had the hitch. This TT has the axles way back. The upper bunk that was OEM in the rear probably did not weigh much. That leaves the toys weight. There are tiedowns for 3 ATVs. I forget the exact height but this is damn high. I had to figure out the load distributing hitch as there were some parts missing when we picked it up. (The seller was clueless.) It was one scary drive home with the new purchase. NOW, I've got the truck's front wheels back on the ground! The trailer has mis-matched 15" Trailer Radials on it. I'm not sure of the rating. Since this rig is heavy, I ought to be running near rated pressure. First trip out with the trailer, I should take it by the truckstop scales... find out what it does weigh.

It's going to take one hell of a wing to get the air over that 11' TT! We thought long & hard about what I needed in a camper. I needed a Toy Hauler because I needed the ramp for the scooter. I'm not steady on my feet & have trouble on stairs... so I need a real bed on the same level as the bathroom, especially in the middle of the night..

Only pict I have, shows a bit of the front. The A frame has a big (black plastic) tool box with 3 RV batteries (can just see the edge in the photo) & the propane in front of that. Praise the lord, it came with an electric jack. Dang this sucker is high! I never had to watch bridges before! We had to unhook over night... Can't believe we didn't get 1 photo coupled up.
