  1. I stopped in for visitation with my truck & the mechanic took me in the back & showed me the progress to date. I liked the look of the pickup tube he fabbed & installed in the tank filter basket. I left very happy. Then I was reading on CDF... and I saw a thread asking "Why the a through the basket pickup could NOT be used with a fill pipe return Y?" I hadn't thought much about it, but this is exactly as my install was shaping up. The answer sent me scurrying to the Diesel shop this morning. You can run a pickup outside the filter basket & return through the fill hose. Or You can pickup IN the filter basket & return IN the filter basket. But the basket itself is designed for the OEM pump capacity. Once the tank level falls below the top of the filter basket... drawing 150 GPH out of the filter basket, the strainer will not keep up, the basket can be pumped down so it draws air! Essencially Out of Fuel at what, 1/4 tank? Now I have heard of mis-measured pickup tubes... I had not heard of this before last night. This IS a mistake... I would not have thought twice about this. I don't know how far they got after I left yesterday. I hope I got to them before the tank went back in.AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
  2. "In this case we found a way to get better fuel mileage and a little more power on some trucks. This pump has ALL the upgrades and improvements that our exact replacement units have." "What we did to achieve this goal was to mix and match parts from other VP44 pumps to advance the timing mechanically and optimize fueling rates for better mileage." "If you are presently or plan on advancing the timing with an electronic plug in device or programmer don’t buy this pump as we are only doing mechanically what those products do electronically. " "The Special X pump is made from all Bosch made parts. It does not have any aftermarket or modified parts in it, so this allows us to sell it with the Bosch 1 year unlimited mileage warranty." This VP44X pump seems to give 2-3 mpg improvement. Is it preferable to do this mechanically? Or to advance the timing electronically (which can be turned on & off electronically & alternative tunes utilized)? http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/bfmVP44.html Thoughtfully, Russell
  3. Update: I had visitation with my truck & the mechanic at the diesel shop. He's made uo & installed the 1/2" pickup in the sender basket & the tank is about ready to reinstall.I also pumped him for information on the shut down & failure. Not sure which connection was faulty BUT he found corrosion not readily apparent in the Positive on the drivers side battery... in the stack of ring terminals. The ground on the passenger's side battery & the quick disconnect just off this ground. So separating & throughly cleaning these was done. He points out that the interconnect between batteries is a critical link in this truck... a high resistance connection anywhere will load the circuits... Learning every day. When the lift pump stopped running, the VP44 ran out of fuel. He had to bleed the schrader valve & injectors to get it to fire off, after he got the lift pump working again. He did not actually drive the truck after he got it running, so my fingers are still crossed that the VP44 is not toast.
  4. Blue Chip Diesel is a VP44 specialist... that's all they do. There is an incredible wealth of information including detailed information on diagnosing the VP44 injection pump. If you own a VP44 truck, you need to read this. Blue Chip Diesel on VP44 MODS: May I suggest you sticky this link!
  5. Did they cover it or is it on you? It could be false economy if they have a short life.
  6. Yeah, I had a boat customer with a single Perkins TD and twin tanks... The return line went to both but favored one... He could not imagine why the boat was leaning! LOL!! It was a new boat, in warentee so after we found it, the manufactorer sent in people to make the repair.
  7. IMHO, It is just about always better to use a plug in, than open up the OEM wiring. With a plug in, you can remove it for trouble shooting, return the truck to stock... As you know my truck is in a repair shop. I stopped by there soon after it was taken inside & talked to the owner & the mechanic... M wanted to know about my non-factory wiring. It took me a second as I couldn't remember 'any' after market wiring. There's the brake controler... there's my built in Escort Radar system... Yup, that was it. I hope knowing what it was speeded my work. I have bought an extension harness which I modified for the IAT fooler... not got it installed yet. The XZT+ is also a plug in... coming soon.
  8. Are you the original owner of this truck or is it possible a previous owner ran an oiled filter? I bought my truck new... used a K&N for a short while... saw no gains & after I learned of the oiled filter possible issues (and held it to a light, yanked it in favor of an OEM filter. My intake tube is clean fortunately. Anyrate, you know what you have to do to clean it up.
  9. Wife had an old "Twister" (Bruce Mfg) turf tractor with a worn out one lung B&S... something like that would have been a neet transplant. Alas, we let the tractor go...
  10. Drill Spot . Com is a reseller. The Baldwin PF 7977 filters showed up today (1 day) drop shipped from Grangers. I emailed a complaint that the shipment was made "GROUND" when I PAID FOR 3 day (their only shipping choice)... basically Paid unnecessarily. Hours later the package arrived. They refunded my shipping (only because I noticed & complained). The Baldwin BF 1275 & BF 7634 are being shipped from a different location. Their site is misleading... seems clear you are paying for 3 business day shipping. Or Free 3 Business Day Shipping promo... when in fact the shipping is from Graingers closest stocking location. I'll have my stuff & a good deal... I dislike playing games. I'd order from them again, but I'd sure check my invoice & complain again about the extra shipping charges to get them refunded.
  11. ScanGauge VS Utra Gauge... $100 price difference. Which would you buy?
  12. No way to know how long it's had low fuel pressure, as I stupidly don't have guages yet. I suspect it has not been long as I am coming off winter with only occasional use... corrosion during off season possible cause... I included a tapped elbow at the VP44 in the big line kit... gauges coming soon to a truck near you!
  13. I found some good referance information on http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/ I called the Diesel Shop to pass along the information & they have the truck running! They found & fixed wiring faults... grounds & power connections. I have my fingers crossed on the VP44. They will proceed with the AD150 & big line install.
  14. I have no intention of an in-tank pump. I had the truck moved from the dealership to a diesel shop. They're mostly bigger trucks & equipment. Not much electronic controled. I have a used AD150 & big line kit to go in.Should we try to make this run with the on engine pump or go ahead with the install?
  15. Is a scan guage a replacement for add on guages (with right sending units?) After being jerked around, I'm thinking of picking up such a tool.
  16. The Diesel shop got to my truck. They'll be back on my truck today... so I need advise ASAP!! You'll recall the dealership told me "No Codes", "Zero Fuel Pressure", "You need a lift pump" ($600 to replace OEM, $1200 to retrofit in tank)... charged me $88 for diagnositic. The diesel shop pulled codes P1689, P0230, P0232, P1693. Apparently there is a test sequence which can test the lift pump.. it ran. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! P0230 - Transfer Pump (Lift Pump) Circuit Out of Range Problem detected in fuel transfer pump circuits. P0232 - Fuel Shutoff Signal Voltage Too High Fuel shut-off signal voltage too high from ECM to fuel injection pump. P1689 - No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops. Monitor & Set Conditions Communication between Engine Control Module (ECM) and fuel injection pump module is monitored when ignition is on. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE Wouldn't it have been a beech to have spent $1200 and still not have a running truck!! The mechanic noted the mouse sign... did not see any damage... yet... His other thought at this point is a bad ground. Where is the hard to see ground... behind what? I've had it suggested to swap out the Fuel Pump relay. http://forum.mopar1973man.com/threads/3848-It-was-Running-Fine-until-it-WASN-T!-WTF

  18. I have genuine AD filters (UPS out for delivery as we speak) for this time. I will be buying these better filters with my next orders, going under the seat for next filter change. --- Update to the previous post --- I have ordered my reserve filters from drillspot.com I got the free 3rd day shipping on the BF 1275 & BF 7634. I got 2 PF 7977 @ 12.60 each plus 6.19 3rd day shipping. After I figured in the shipping, this was the best I could find today. These will go in the Tupperware under the seat. (I drilled a couple of opposing holes in the seat frame & put a bungie across so the stuff stays under the seat!)
  19. I recall when I was just 16... parked my Mom's Chrysler 300 in the market lot where I woorked. A carriage rolled down the slope and dished in the whole d@mn door. We took the inside of the door off, pushed with both hands and "popped" the dent back out! There was a quarter sized ding that never came out. I learned to park with the bumpers headed up hill, not the side of the car. All was good until Mom caught me racing across the empty lot at quitting time! Ooops!!
  20. I'm a newbie at this... but I'm just wondering if one can "wire" the waste gate tight enouh or if a turnbuckle is needed to get a solid hold on it? Thoughtfully,Russ
  21. I found this "tried to use a Donaldson P551315 but the top of the filter is made different" on another forum. http://www.dieselbombers.com/air-dog/22444-airdog-filter-cross-reference-s.html Has anyone physically used the Donaldson P551315? I have found what looks like good prices on Baldwin BF 7634 (12.65 Free shipping) & BF 1275 (14.30 Free shipping) Is the BF 7634 a good filter?
  22. Thanks, AH64ID This is the information Cummins owners need. Can we get this stickied or put in a chart somewhere?Russ
  23. I have extracted this information from a thread on CDF. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/6-7l-performance-parts-discussion/276491-air-dog-filter-numbers.html Glacier Diesel Power AirDog Filter Reference PureFlow P/N Cross Reference P/N Manufacturer AirDog FF100-10 FF5617 Fleetguard AirDog FF100-5 FF5587 Fleetguard AirDog FF100-3 FF5613 Fleetguard AirDog WS80 FS19768 Fleetguard AirDog WS100 LFF9594 Luber-Finer NAPA Part # 3626 2 micron fuel filter works on the airdog!!! Thanks to CDF TONKATOY2 PRICING This can be very hard to understand. I once had to buy a replacement alternator of an OMC I/O boat. I found the part through a general marine supply house... buying from the manufacteror. Since dealer parts are "high" I thought this would be the best price. Just to keep everyone honest, I checked with the closest OMC dealer... it was about half!! So it isn't always so. I'd like to price both ways, just to see. (Hey, we all like to save a buck!)
  24. I don't think I asked this here... I'm in a fog this morning... Is there a crossover to other branded filters / separators that would save any money? Thanks(If this has been asked before, MODS direct me to it & delete this thread)
  25. My 4.10 geared truck is basically stock. Running empty in OD, I can get the best mpg (into the 19s) loafing on a 2 lane local Route at 45-50... only using the throttle when necessary. Highway driving in OD, I don't want to run 65 as the mpg will fall off... I see better mpgs at 55 but it's hard to keep it at that. I usually run 45-50 on secondary routes, 60-65 on the interstate (60 unless I need to drive faster) I'm not so much in love with driving fast anymore (retired/disability).
