might 'dip toes' into toyota's water.....
They are not interference engines but when the chain comes off at 6000 rpm it wads up in the timing cover and makes a nasty mess. Split the cover from top to bottom almost. It was actually pretty neat to see and didn't cost me anything as it was just a parts truck with a rotted frame and the only thing I wanted out of it was the straight axle in the front end to replace the IFS that was in my 89.JR

Look out below.
We have finally chipped into winter a little with temps dropping down into the low teens. Been unseasonably warm for being on the lake, we generally get a lot of weather from our Canadian neighbors across the way.JR

Torque Converter Upgrade Help
I agree with W&F if the TC is worn out the valve body is probably not far behind it. Some of the bigger name trans companies offer custom valve bodies set up for towing that ramp the apply pressure. BD offers one that allows the convertor to stay locked all the way down to 2nd gear (very useful if you ever intend to use an exhaust brake) If your having temp problems an additional cooler will be much more beneficial than a pan. Genos sells a bulk head type drain plug for your OEM pan for 7 or 8 bucks.JR

might 'dip toes' into toyota's water.....
The 22re (4cylinder) was available through 95. Not exactly a power plant but will literally run FOREVER. The only thing you have to watch out on those are timing chains every 90-100k miles. You can tell when its time for replacement if you hear a brief rattle at cold start up. Almost sounds like a valve train rattle, but 9 times out of 10 it is the chain rattling off of the cover because its so stretched out that it takes a minute for the oil pressure driven tensioner to take the slack out and quieten it up. Eventually the plastic chain guides will break, then she will make even more noise, and by then if you haven't rubbed a hole through the cover your flirting with disaster! (Don't ask me how I know)JR

Air dog 150 not working fuel relay clicking
Sounds normal. That is how they are all wired. It should plug in to the vehicle side harness to trigger the relay (pictured) when the truck is started. The lead coming from the alt is the primary power source.JR

might 'dip toes' into toyota's water.....
All 01-04 Tacoma's are eligible for a potential buy back. The owners of these trucks were contacted by Toyota and encouraged to take there trucks in for inspection. Depending on the condition of the frame they either had the option of repairing their truck or could opt into a buy back program where they were compensated more than 100% of the trucks value. Even the earlier Toyotas were susceptible to frame rot directly behind the cab where the frame arches. With that being said, they are probably the most reliable truck mechanically that you will ever find. I've had 2 pickups with over 350k miles on the original drive train. The front ends hold up well to abuse as well. They also have Excellent off road manners and are very predictable in the snow and ice. If you can find one with a solid frame and body you will not be disappointed. JR

01 head gasket recall ?
Tom you may be right and maybe Toyota voluntarily put the recall out? The truck I bought had also been sitting for several years with a blown motor. I stripped it down, honed the cylinders out, put in new pistons, rings, crank, timing, set, oil and water pump, and put a low mileage head from another motor on it. That was an awesome little pick up, wish I still had it.JR

200F thermostat
I think it would defeat the purpose of running a higher stat if it made the fan engage a majority of the time.JR

Happy Thanksgiving
I drove 5k (or a tad more) by 6am this morning, no sweat! LOL All kidding aside, happy thanksgiving to all. This day has always been celebrated at my grandparents, just the tradition of the family. However my grandmother fell and broke her arm last week while out feeding the newest calf on the farm and is now sidelined from the kitchen so my aunt is picking up the duties for this year. Grandma is not too happy about it! JR

Air dog 150 not working fuel relay clicking
A washer for a 1/4" bolt will have the right outside diameter as well. It will be a little smaller ID but not a concern because it's only a return line and not worried about flow. It's actually very close to the ID of the fitting.JR

Brake pad replacement?
Not including the requirements of the internals of an automatic....a good quality single disc TC, modifed valve body for higher line pressure and 2nd gear lock up if desired, and an upgraded input shaft.JR

Scangauge II or SG Diesel?
Interesting. Never seen that version before. I see a couple of features the diesel version has that I like. Not sure what constitutes it as a "diesel" specific though. I think you should be our resident guinea pig and tell us how it works! JR

Questions about Shell "Fit" diesel
All fuel suppliers have to abide by the same federal requirements. They aren't going to invest anything that isnt mandated because it cuts into profits. Hate to say it but probably just marketing hype. If it's a high volume station you should have no problems. I tend to use the same 2 stations locally owned by the same person. He has an interest in all his fuel because he owns a fleet of tractor trailers and a ton of construction equipment and uses his fuel for his equipment. I see him out there personally checking tanks so I know hes up on the wheel. If I cant get from either place I try to use a popular station with high turn over rate. JR

Transitioning the "work truck" into My Daily Driver... Upgrades? Areas of Concern?
This is a big one that is often overlooked. Brake fluid absorbs water over time which in turn drastically lowers the boiling point of the fluid and eats the seals in your calipers, wheel cylinders, etc. The power steering fluid also used on the vac pump and is important to keep fresh fluid running through it to prevent any unnecessary failures. AirDog 150 Install... Clarification?
You cant just clip the return line back into the draw straw? JR
-
AirDog 150 Install... Clarification?
The return line comes from the back of the head. I have not ever installed a draw straw but I can't imagine you would need to replace that line, just trace it back to the tank once you find it and hook it back up. You should have two returns when it's all said and done, one return coming from the engine and then the return from the AD which if it is the same as the 100 will tee into the vent on the fill neck (or possibly into the draw straw?)Would definitely be interested in some pics when your all done!JR

XM Radio in the truck
So your saying all it does is plug into the radio and then the antenna plugs back into it? Does it come through a radio station? JR

01 head gasket recall ?
I had an 89 Toyota pick up in 07 I received a notice in the mail about 6 months after I owned it that there was a recall for the steering system. I'm trying to remember what it was, possibly a pitman arm? Or something similar I can't recall. I took it into the Toyota dealer (who can pass on free parts and a complimentary alignment?) And had it done.JR

TIRES - Sizes, brands, etc. - What do you run?
You will like the Duratracs. I almost bought another set but wasn't so sure about the looks of a 285/70. I have seen some guys running them and they looked to wide for the rim. Maybe it was just the type of wheel they were running. I ended up going 285/75/17 Nitto Teras. So far they seem smooth as a whistle at speeds up to 75 mph. Got the chance to test them off road I had to pull a half ton Ford out of a sticky spot. They are definitely no MT but are hands down better than an A/T tread pattern. I sure hope they last longer then 26k miles. There is definitely a lack of selection in the 285/75 category, I wish more manufacturers would jump on board making this size.JR
