Gut tells me that we might be in for a wild ride this winter. At least out west anyway as the jet stream has been running more radical with changing air masses, long sweeps running north and down south.

 

I'm not a paid weather man so could be   wrong.

 

Just make sure you get plenty firewood in and truck's ready to roll.

I gotta get my firewood finished for the year. I need to make 2 more runs out to the forest. I'm watching the weather change now here a bit colder in the mornings now down to 47-52*F. I'm kind of figuring on a not as cold winter but a snowy winter.

Around here the forecast is for another cold winter. Last year we had 75 days below zero (old record WAS 59} and about normal snow.

agreed! as per the farmers almanac it should be a colder longer winter for us. we are already gettin the cold nip in the air here in AZ. (7000 ft)  i have about 4 cords split and another 1.5 ready to be. still need another truck of aspen before i'm good for the winter. i just installed my engine block heater cord yesterday and changed oil to 5/40 syn.

i'm excited i love the winter time.

Birch and poplar trees around my area......................NE Illinoiz/SE Wisconsin..........................are starting to drop leaves.  My apple tree is dropping leaves also!!

La notta influence here in Oregon makes for variable weather. I'm hoping for an early winter with low snow levels. Makes for November and December great hunting. Love hunting elk with a bow when there is snow down to 1,500'. Last couple of years we were able to drive over the crest of the mountains we hunt. That's 3,700'. Not good. Scatters the animals over a lot bigger area when snow doesn't concentrate them. My early season starts Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Can't wait! Buddy went scouting. Saw quite a few elk herds and a few scattered deer. Elk is our primary nemesis in September. Deer just opportunistic until November.

Ordered another load of Douglas Fir coming tomorrow. Nice when It's so very busy to just order it. Used to always cut it myself.

 

 saw some fall colors near the high school. Was surprised.

We dropped a 135' fir tree on our property a couple weeks ago to round out our winter wood needs. All cut up, split, cleaned up. Just need to burn later this year.

Strange, I'm further north and yet to see a change in the trees. Were getting the northern winds from Canada and the nights are getting cooler. Days are becoming more mild but business as usual here.

Colors on only 2 trees I saw out of hundreds at high school. Wild hazelnut is beginning to get some yellow.

Our trees have yet to change but like Mike we are seeing temps down to the low to mid 40's at night. I don't mind that though. Makes for a cooler day.

you guys  seeing  color now...  has it been  really wet or  dry  this summer??

 

I've see   drought  stressed trees     give up their leaves  early,  and    too wet will   sometimes  get a  fungus/mold  going   that'll  knock the leaves off  early too..

I  will advise  you propane  burners  to  get your  tanks  topped off  early this  fall...  and  prebook  some!   it's  pretty  reasonable  yet.

 

We are going to  have  a pretty good corn crop,  and  going to be  WET...    and propane  is   the main fuel  to dry it on-farm.

 

I've seen  the  statistics,  and  total  propane use  for   drying crops  is  really  a  drop in the bucket...  but  guess who will 'use' it to their advantage???    THE SUPPLIERS.

 

I can  almost  'see' the  headlines   in a month or  so.....  " Farmers  drying  corn  are    causing people to  freeze"...   or something  like that.

The propane shortage got so bad up in the Grand Forks area last year that the suppliers were going around and buying back the propane from the customers that could spare it. And they were buying it back at almost twice what they sold it for!! It was crazy!!

Thanks for mentioning about the propane and gasoline for the generator.

I already pre-bought 800 gallons of propane which should get me through the winter, plus I have about 80% in my tank now. Last winter with the cold weather I used almost 1,000 gallons. I hope I have it figured right this year. Oh, I got it at 1.649/gallon this year. The going rate for pre-buy in 1.849/gallon here.

i have to add some to the making sure you have propane and fuel for generators. please make sure you have plenty of bottled water, and enough food rations for at least 2 weeks. i've seen the store shelves EMPTY here ina few hours all cuz they were calling for a 1' snow. people are not wise enough in mass groups to be rational. most people i interact with ona simi regular basis buy food for 1-3 day at a time. they cant seem to plan a week or two a head.

i watched the town get shut down and the people around where i live melting snow for drinking water. as the pipes had frozen.

Do you guys in the mid west burn corn stalks for heat?
