Turbo Kits

Has anyone heard of Rotomaster turbo rebuild kits.  Rock Auto sells them for about $35.  Thinking of trying one mine is starting to get a little oil past the seals.

It will be Chinese junk. A real Holset kit costs about double & is well worth it. I have installed dozens of them.

Rotomaster is an american company that makes their products here but I've never dealt with any of their products personal. That being said personally I would go with a genuine holset kit since I've always got good quality parts from cummins/holset.

I forgot all about them. They did turbo kits that were popular in the 80s. Seems quality, but I would still pay for the Holset kit.

rotomaster IS  an American company,   but  in this  day and age....   I'd  bet  their  parts  are  coming  via  China.    If  they  are priced  like  a Chinese  set...then they is.

Thanks everyone for your input.  Thats what I thought its probably not as good quality. You get what you pay for.  I'll go with Holset parts.

Is it OK to reuse the turbo to manifold gasket?

I have,    as  long  as  the   gasket isn't  rusty, eroded.   Should  be ok

 

I think   I've  even  sprayed   a  light  layer of   permatex   copper  head gasket sealer  on the  gasket (on a not-so-good gasket)  and   got by.

I tend to agree to use a Holset kit as well. Even though you can get cheaper kits off Ebay and web not worth it to cut corners on quality.

 

Personally I would just get a new gasket most likely doesn't cost much but why deal with a good rebuild and possibly have to change a manifold gasket because you cut corners again. Might as well get a gasket kit (manifold gasket, oil-return gasket, and oil o-ring for the feed line).

At a local big rig shop, I got the gasket for about $4 in stock.

Is there a write up on how to rebuild turbos on this site?  BAE has the manual available but it covers several different models and is a little confusing to follow.

ill be rebuilding mine soon and ill do a write up on it. there are plenty of youtube vids about it but im detail oriented and like taking good pics so ours will be good, overall its very simple as long as there is no damage to internal parts

Soak it in some used trans fluid & add acetone if you like. Store OUTDOORS overnight. That should loosen stuff up.

Download the rebuild manual from Holset.

Pretty easy, if you follow the directions.

I have mine apart and soaking now.  The manual from Holset is pretty good.  Hopefully put it back together tonight

The best solvent that I was told for peeling all that baked on carbon and junk is Carb Dip. Just make sure to remove all rubber part before dipping.

Sorry it's been awhile but its back together and running great.  A few things you may need when rebuilding your turbo.  A good in lb torque wrench, and small long snap ring pliers. I would also get the gasket for the rear cover, the one that covers the waste gate, the kit doesn't come with one.  Mine was worn but I reused it. The only hard part was getting the exhaust housing apart.  I would try carb dip or acitone to clean, mineral spirits didn't work that well.  Also my snap ring pliers were to short to reach the one snap ring so I had to fight with it a little.  The Holset manual was pretty good.
