Teardown and Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Where could one find one of those 215 pumps? Like what vehicle(s) have them from the factory?

Because I am kicking around the idea of buying a 12V 2nd gen and building the engine over time. One of those builds that progresses when money is plentiful...

No worries. lol I know you are panicked and excited.

Well starting a week from this Friday I'll have a week to get it together. That means I need all parts here before then as it takes at least 3 day to ship things to BFE. Hopefully most of the parts will be here this week and early next week. I'll make the Vulcan order today to adapt my fuel supply. I'll also make the $2K order from Carl's too.

Just got off the phone with DAP. 3 of the injectors have issues, and 1 of them has really bad issues. It might need a new nozzle. Wonder what would cause that?? They don't have more than 20K on them.

depends on the specifics of the issues I suppose

Seems like I've been reading about a lot of issues with DAP injectors lately.

I don't think it was the injectors' fault. I'm wondering if I somehow got dirt in them, or possibly the pump was spitting shavings / metal out as it grenaded itself.

Not sure where you've seen issues? I haven't seen anything lately.

lol that would make sense!

Not necessarily saying anything bad about them, just saying reading through threads on injector issues, they seem to be mainly DAP. More then likely due to their popularity and a lot of people having them so the likihood of reported 'issues' on injectors could be there's.

Agreed. The more product out there, the more failures you will have. However, it's hard to get to the root of an injector issue considering they are so sensitive. Heck there's dum dums out there like me still running the stock filter

Just get that FASS on there and call it good!

Negative. It won't hold the pressure I want / need at the pump. I've got a list of fuel supply parts :stirthepot:

Got some work done on the pump yesterday and today. I love it when the mail man comes.

Shutoff solenoid

AFC live with a kinked line. I called PDD and they were very helpful. They offered to send me a new one no questions asked, but suggested I take it apart and cut the line myself. I'll get better pictures of it later.

I also got the rack plug, fuel return banjo, 4K gov springs (installed already), pump washer, and pump nut.

Right now I'm waiting on my order from Vulcan to adapt my fuel system, and the whole kit from Carl. I need to buy an 80amp relay and 65amp fuse to wire in the shutoff solenoid. Anyone know what plug is on the end of the shutoff solenoid? I'd like to get a factory plug for it.

I modified the AFC for max travel today. Most people use a grinder, but since I have a machine shop at my disposal I figured I'd use the mill and make a nice countersink. The rest of the install was a breeze. I set the smoke screw at 2 turns in and the AFC at the middle of it's adjustment on the mounting screws. We'll see how it works out.

AH64ID - I may give hamilton a call and see what they say is best for me. I do plan on turning around 4k, but this is by no means a race truck!
Wild and Free - I am not planning on pulling the crank. The entire engine will be resealed though. The front cover is already off, the rear housing doesn't have seals IIRC, and rear cam O ring?? I'll have to look into that.

I decided to wait on pulling the pistons until my engine stand gets here. Nothing inside is loose though. I know that for sure.

Few pics from the day...
Intake valve - looks terrible!

Tore the turbo apart. I'm probably going to polish the housing.

Would running that TCW-3 oil in the fuel cause that horrible gummy buildup on the intake valves?

Here's the turbo and elbow together. I have the intake plate left to do, and maybe the intake horn if I'm feeling crazy.

Did you wet sand those with 400 and use red scotch brite? I'd like to know. Thats how I polished my dirt bike frames back in the day.

Flush the complete fuel system including the head.

Absolutely not. How would fuel ever get to the valves? This is a direct injection motor, so the intake valves will never see fuel directly.

I climbed down the hole long ago haha.
