Ok gang... I got my next task at hand. Got up this morning and had to run to McCall to do a bit of grocery shopping and when I fired up the engine I had a strange growl/howl that was unsual. Went shopping and returned home and figured I would check it out. Pull the belt and check the tensioner bearing smooth and no wooble, water pump feels good, and the fan bear is good. But get to the alternator rough and howls when spun. Assuming I found my source of noise. I know Prowelder did a write up of a alternator rebuild on CF.com http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98-5-02-powertrain/257771-bosch-alternator-rebuild.html Also I know he got parts from Fixinrams.com http://…

this happened to me 3 times yesterday coming home. i stopped and bought a drink. when pulling back on the four lane i hammered it and it took off. hit 20#s of boost, 800* egt and and it would hardly go any further. egt was moving up and down 500* fluidly not jerky. let off the throttle, slowed and hit again. same thing only went a little faster and higher on the gauges. did it a few more times and after 1 or 1 1/2 mile it was working just fine. the second time i stopped for fuel and it was doing it again only this time i noticed my ect gauge was only reading 150*. bought my fuel and looked under the hood. saw nothing out of the ordinary. upper radiator hose felt very norm…

I can go thro all gears with out the clutch no problem but using the clutch seems as if it hesitates to get in there.. I got the south bend dual disk clutch so i thought maby that could cause it to be harder. Any thought would be appreciated

Guys, I am having some issues about hooking up some of my guages for my 2001 Cummins Quad Cab 4x4. I bought 4 guages (Isspro for my fuel pressure and Auto Meter for the rest) from Cummin Performance Diesel through Jamie. Spent plenty of time of the phone with him an he was extremely helpful. I purchased a trans and exhaust temp guage, boost and fuel pressure guages. I have some questions on the exhaust hookup for the probe. Instructions say to drill into the manifold and tap with a 1/8 npt, not a problem, 1. Wondering if the temp probe would be better in the 4" exhaust right after the turbo vs. the manifold? 2. How do you keep any tap you put in the manifold or exha…

Compressor housing is pretty grimy, but I thought the blades looked ok (except for my finger prints!). Notice that the intake hose is quite clean as well as the lid to the filter box (I've never cleaned those). Here's my question: Can I carefully wipe of the filter housing and quit there? Or, do I need to clean more of the turbo unit? Why is it that the intake hose and filter box is clean and the compressor housing is not? Thanks,Eric

Thinking about attempting to rebuild my injectors. Possibly trying to increase the power output a little in the process. Can't seem to find any good info on how to go about doing this. Biggest problem I think will be parts for them if needed. Any ideas?

I've been reading around on the forum (great way to learn), and notice several posts talking about boost in the 30+ psi range. I pull a 10K fifth wheel and I've never seen boost above low 20's. Something wrong? My EGT's are 1100° in only the toughest of pulling - rare. 800° - 900° general driving with fiver in tow. MPG is good too.ThxEric

I have been wanting to do some reworking of my return line setup (stock 12V setup) and it's just a little weird. Now my question is, do the 24V's have the return for the injectors going straight back to the tank or do they somehow end up back in the inlet side of the VP44? I don't even remember seeing any return line things on the 24V injectors so did I miss something or what? The 12V engine dumps the injector return fuel straight into the fuel filter, so the whole return line setup remains at inlet side pressures. The only return line that has no pressure (goes to the tank) is the one on the P7100 that dumps excess fuel from the lift pump. Basically I want to get ri…

It finally stumbled a little this morning. I watched the tach drop a little,I mean just a little then the motor, like turning on the AC and the light came on. What a joke, as many cam sensors as I threw at this truck back when I had all that trouble and now I get to use one of the three new one's I have.

If you read my tranny post recently, you know I have been having issues with my truck while hauling my 5th wheel. I have posted a couple of posts on here and I have to say, I have learned alot already from a bunch of good, knowledgable people on this forum. For that I say "Thank You"!!!! Mike had the kindness to call me personally tonight and talk to me for almost an hour and discuss my truck issues. Mike, you are one hell of a guy and I will always support this site and tell many others!!!!! Great people like you are hard to find and I thank you once again for the great information. You sound like one hell of a guy. Mike was even giving major credit to all the peop…

I thought I posted this on this site before but cant find it?? I might be losing it. I pulled my 28' 5th wheel to the U.P. for a week of camping. Everything was seemingly fine until someone in front of me, about 5 miles before the campgrounds, stopped to turn left on the 2 lane highway. When I took off after they turned, my truck was shifting funny. It didnt want to go from 3rd gear to 4th. I had to feather the throttle to get it to shift. I pulled my buddy's boat around all weekend without any issues. Came home yesterday from a 3 hour drive hauling our 5th wheel and going down the highway, it pulls fine without any issues. As soon as I turned off the highway to get to my…

I'm looking at a jacob brake off a 2001 5 spd with the HX35. Wondering if this will fit my 02 6 spd , and also wanted you guys to look at the pics here and tell me if it looks like it's everything here:shrug:. Seller says it doesn't have a switch with it for inside the cab because he's using it for lights now, so wondering if i can just use a normal toggle switch..and if there's anything else that doesn't look like it's there. He said something about a 4 wire mini harness that runs into the cab and connects to the factory harness ? Any ideas on that one. Also, I have the 4" MBRP turbo back which appears to be 3 1/2 " at the flange then expands out right away to the 4 " ho…

I know this conversation has been around forever, but while asking people what to tow my 5th in, I get about a 50/50 split on answers, so I am asking here.I have a 2001 Dodge Cummins, Quad Cab 4x4 with the 3.54 ratio. Only mod's to the motor are the SuperChip set to "tow-safe mode" and a K&N air filter. My 5th weights about #9500 and I dont tow my 5th under 55mph with OD. My problem comes in when I hit the interstate and run 65mph. My motor will scream if I leave it in Drive. What is the correct towing procedure??????

I have replced my cam sensor everytime (almost) everytime I replaced my vp and now I keep getting CEL. I erase the code and about two days later it comes back on. No miss no nothing running good. I have about three of them at the shop, I can put it in no problem it just pisses me off because its about three months old. What will the cam sensor do if I just keep running it? I guess I should put one the the tool box though

I have searched for a video about how to check the flywheel bolts to see if they are tight. I have steering wheel vibration. It pretty much goes away when driving. The damper looks ok. Also, Could this be a PS problem? The engine does not vibrate, just the steering wheel.

There is a guy talking to me about 12V's but he can't find any and is heading the 24V route instead since they are plentiful and I am not 100% on some things. He is getting it from a 70 year old with low mileage who just replaced the VP44, so I told him that would be the best one. Aside from needing a fuel pressure gauge, better lift pump, use 2 stroke, what else is there? Plus I can't get into enough details about what I just said. He wants to know how long he can run without a gauge and I said however long you want to be second guessing the lift pump. He also wants to know about what to do when the lift pump does go bad. Assuming he has a fuel pressure gauge by th…

this weekend i am taking my tranny out and preparing to install another one next week end. i have read several write ups here and feel confident i can do this. i know the nv5600 is quite heavy and i am prepared for that. just how heavy is the transfer case? i dont want ot get clobbered by it either.i figured while I had it out i would replace the seals since they leak slightly. does a seal removal tool make the job any easier? i have seen other ways, but if the tool is worth spending the money on i am all for it. any advice is appreciated.

My belt rides towards the front and eats into the tensioner,I've replaced the pully(not the tensioner) but only does this w/AC belt,I have non/AC belt that seems to run correctly, but for the life of me I can't see how to adjust the AC compressor since there is a roll pin that has to align in mounting bracket.
