  1. Ok Gang... I'm looking for a bit of help on diagnosing a charging issue. Been a busy day for fire calls today and on my way home from this last fire call I was noticing on the SG II my charge voltage is low and erratic. It still within spec of 13.5 to 14.5 volts but it bouncing a bit. With my lights all going its hover right at 13.5 to 13.6 which is usual for a charge voltage. Then it might bounce up to 14.0 to 14.1 then fall again... My first though is field brushes are wore out... Still running stock batteries 8 years old... No codes either... Now here is the kicker I need to do this without throwing a ton of money at parts guessin' I don't want to blow my Christmas Ca…

Well if Cummins cant fix it it's doomed to fall of a clif. I took truck to cummins to let them try. Well if I had stock injectors he said they could search for leaks by pressure the system. And there stock injectors are about 500.00 each, thats what he said,I dont know. They did the usual routine stuff, hook up scanner and the usual stuff came up NOTHING. They seemed sure that the crossover tubes where leaking and one may have been. It runs a little diff. but miss is still there. Here is where I am at,new DDP 50 HP injectors, ECM,Apps, crossover tubes, cam sensor, VP Blue Chip, Head rebuilt, Starter, Alternator, water pump, thermostat & sensor, new airdog 150 with quic…

  3. Finally got the vp44 plumbed, primed, bled, and wired. As my son was cranking the engine to bleed the hp lines, I got this psssh, psssh, pssssh noise.... Now, I'll let you know what isn't done yet on this 'several fixes at once' Intake is still open to the world. Air horn is not there, along with any form of intake pipe or turbo. Radiator is not in, steering gear is not in, Lines are dangling from the pump. I did allow the engine to 'fire' for a couple seconds after tightening the hp lines....just to confirm my 'new' pump is a runner... and that part is good. Back to the weird noise: I would swear the noise is coming out the …

Put my 2001, 47re with 2nd gear lock up to the test this past weekend. My rig with 5r weighs 17,600 lb. I navigated parts of the 6% Grapevine canyon on I-5. The trans worked flawlessly. On grades I would lock into 2nd push her up to 2000 rpm and flip the torque converter lockup switch. The oil would heat to 210f while pushing up to 2000rpm. After lockup trans oil cooled to 180, eng temp, and stay there. The grade and load took all the 235hp at 2700rpm I had with skinny pedal flat on the floor. Going down same grades decelerating, I had the same result. Just love that mod. Strongly endorse the 2nd gear lock up mod.-

  5. If you read my tranny post recently, you know I have been having issues with my truck while hauling my 5th wheel. I have posted a couple of posts on here and I have to say, I have learned alot already from a bunch of good, knowledgable people on this forum. For that I say "Thank You"!!!! Mike had the kindness to call me personally tonight and talk to me for almost an hour and discuss my truck issues. Mike, you are one hell of a guy and I will always support this site and tell many others!!!!! Great people like you are hard to find and I thank you once again for the great information. You sound like one hell of a guy. Mike was even giving major credit to all the peop…

  6. UPDATE! - August 14, 2007 - BTU values of fuels and chemicals. http://mopar1973man.servehttp.com/pics/btu's%20values.jpg So is it possible that any kind of cetane booster / injection cleaner containing these chemical can IMPROVE you performance? It's not possible. They have considerable reduction in BTU value and extremely low flash points like gasoline. Please take the time time and look up you favorite additive in my MSDS listing. Also for those of you that are switch to BIO Diesel / Ethanol fuels (Gasser). Take notice that both fuel product less power compared to the Dino version. So it will reduce your fuel mileage some... The higher the BTU value the higher HP/TQ…

  7. UPDATE! - July 18 2007 - Cetane What is it? What does it do? I'm still seeing a large amount of people that want to continue adding cetane boosters to the 2 cycle oil this is not required. Today diesel fuel is approximately 43 - 47 cetane number. Please check over on the MSDS page. Cummins Cetane Requirements for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen Trucks A Cetane rating of 40 is recommended at temperatures above 32 degrees. A Cetane rating of 45 is recommended at temperatures below 32 degrees. There is no benefit to using a higher cetane number fuel than is specified by the engine's manufacturer. The ASTM Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils (D-975) stat…

  8. Wel gang... I'm going to show to graphs... First off a bit of history... From day one when I bought the truck I was told by people to get PowerService +Cetane Boost and run that with the truck to protect the IP/LP pumps. I ran PS till 50K mile when I lost my first LP & IP pumps. After losing both of them I start looking at better solutions that PS, MMO, etc... Hence the start of 2 cycle oil research at 85K miles. I din't have the dosing ratio figured out in the early time but by 95K miles I had figured it out! MPG graph... Take notice the PS up 50K is flat no change and after 95K miles it take off! (2 cycle oil) Cost per mile... Notice the red…

  9. I found some interesting document about the way that diesel fuel is shipped and I'm going to share these document with you... http://www.arb.ca.gov/regact/dieslub/notice.pdf <- Some information on how diesel fuel is now shipped. http://www.arb.ca.gov/regact/dieslub/hor.pdf <- More on how diesel fuel is handled. http://www.ncagr.com/standard/diesellub ... r11504.pdf <- How North Carolina is handling diesel fuel. Basically diesel fuel after being refined is well above the 520 HFRR rating which is unacceptable by any standards. So its up to the delivery personal to add the lubricant package to the truck before delivery. Currently I cannot find anything that insu…

  10. UPDATE! May 19, 2007- 2 Cycle Oil And The DynoJet... Well there has been a lot of talk about 2 cycle oil hurting to HP/TQ numbers. Well I'm here to set the records straight for once and for all... First off let me lay down some baseline information. You all have seen my web page on my BOMBs and MODs I've done. Ok... We all know that the 2002 Cummins SO is rated for 235 HP 460TQ at the flywheel. Run #1 - Stock mode with Edge Comp Turned off. 228 HP - 462 TQ Well this proves there is very little drag between the flywheel to the rear end. Also this proves there was very little improvement in HP/TQ number concerning 2 cycle oil. I'm using conventional D…

  11. I would highly suggest that no one uses 2 cycle oil in a vehicle that is already designed for ULSD. These engines have some very expensive equipment on board like diesel particulate filters etc. These device are not cheap to replace. Also remember this might or will VOID your warranty on your truck. These engine have been redesigned to be run on fuel that are very low in lubricants (Sulfur content).

  12. For starters my lowest temperature around here was recorded at -20.2*F (-29*C) on January 16, 2007 in New Meadows, Idaho. This was recorded by my on-board thermometer which hold histories of HI and LO temps for both inside and out. During this entire season I never use a single anti-gel product on the market. Just diesel fuel and 2 cycle oil.Now remember above in the specs sheet for ULSD the gel point is 0*F.Now think about it. A snowmobile runs on a mixture of about 40:1 to 50:1 gasoline and 2 cycle oil. This very same snowmobile must run in extreme temperatures down as low as -40*F (40*C) and maybe lower. But what I want to point out here is... There is no problem with …

  13. Started by Mopar1973Man,

More Information on ULSD... First, I want to concentrate on the loss of the sulfur and why this is important to you. Sulfur is an Extreme Pressure (EP) lubricant. It is regularly added to lubricating oils and greases to increase the lubricity and to raise the amount of pressure that the lubricant can handle before the lubricating molecular barrier begins to break down. Sulfur has always been a vitally important factor in providing lubrication to diesel engine fuel pumps, fuel injectors, and to a lesser degree engine valves. The reduction now being made takes on-highway diesel from less than 500 ppm to less than 15 ppm, which for all practical purposes eliminates su…

  14. Started by Mopar1973Man,

I'm still researching products and more research I'm doing the more I keep finding that diesel additive are using mineral spirits, xylene, naptha as a anti-gel and/or certane booster. But remember these chemical are NOT lubricants. I'm also finding that some of the chemical that they are using in fuel conditioners are cancer causing and have high health hazards. Like I told one user on Cummins Forum I've got a whole gallon of Xylene in the shop for paint thinner but I won't add that to my diesel fuel!We are trying to find additives to add to our fuel that contain lubricants and not thinners. With the on set of ULSD and lack of lubricants it has the last thing your injecti…

  15. Started by kerley,

I recently found a list of factory recalls for the 1998.5 Cummins. 1. Adapter to the trailer hitch. 2. Fuel line from the fuel filter to the vp44. 3. Re Programming the on board computer. Since I do not trust the Dodge Dealership to do anything but to screw me out of my money, I called them. My mane concern was the computer. They told me that it was done with their Computer which to me means that they just plug in a code reader to see what is going on. They said that they only re programs the part that controls the fuel throttle supply under the recall, if the computer required more re programming I would be notified and I agreed to re program any other defects I w…

I was shopping for upgraded 100hp injectors, and tripped over 100hp nozzles as well... What's the difference? Do you need them both? If you do both, is that 200hp increase? The reason I ask is that a diesel performance shop did all my upgrades on my old truck, and they put 100hp injectors in that one. I am gearing up to do the motor swap, my old motor in new truck... But I thought maybe I would just throw some injectors in the new trucks motor instead, and see how that goes... It's got K&N intake, Larger exhaust, and a BD edge box... Thanks guys!

  18. I've got a new to me 2000 2500 2WD Regular cab with NV4500 transmission and I believe the HX turbo (rubber wastegate tube). 190k miles and no idea how many miles on or even what injectors it has. I'm looking into upgrades to improve towing performance with a 14000lb trailer (20k GVW). I'm not looking to have huge HP or Torque, just to have a decently powerful, reliable and efficient rig. I definitely don't want to upgrade stuff and push it beyond its limits. I don't currently have a EGT sensor. I know I need one. I've already put on the GDP mechanical fuel pump so hopefully I won't have to worry about the VP44 dying for lack of pressure. Running 2 …

  19. OK, I'm finally gonna spend some $$$ and get a cold air intake, high rise intake manifold, and injectors. What I'm wondering is which is best for each. Here is what I was going to buy before asking for suggestions, let me know how good or bad this combination will be. 1. Injectors: DDP 100hp 2. Intake Manifold: CFM 3. Cold Air Intake: S & B The only othe upgrades I currently have is a Edge Juice Box, Air Dog 150, Upgraded Turbo, and 4 inch exhaust. Let me know what you guys think.

  20. First of all, from experience plan on either rebuilding or replacing the fuel filter/water separator drain valve when you upgrade from OEM to higher fuel pressure. I went from 5-10 to 15-20. Had a diesel leak for a few days and finally found the drain valve not shutting off entirely. Why is the drain hose so short? Spills diesel all over the front axle. A longer tube would allow you to catch the diesel when you drain off the water or change the filter. I'm thinking now about adding a filter system. Those element OEM style filters are like $25 and only like 10 microns. What kind of frame rail mounted dual filter system would you recommend. Looks like vulcan performance ha…
