  1. Tuning with a Smarty Programmer Written by pepsi71ocean FOREWARD OK guys, here is the scoop. It has long been know that Smarty S03's burn dirty. But the bigger thing here is the fact that understanding how the smarty works, and base settings to start with seem to be non existence. As a result the confusion created makes the Smarty one of the most confusing programmers on the market. However, I believe that for towing it is one of the more powerful ones when set up correctly. There are many advantages to the Smarty S03, mainly that it is plug and play, you unplug it and you don't have extra computers or added wiring to hook up. Plu…

  2. ok - don't think I have seen this one before that I remember. Got my truck back few weeks back with new RV275's and some valve/head work. All good except when I start off in morning it stalls the engine. Basically I start 1st time everytime with 16-17psi. Then I sit for 30 secs @800 rpm and as soon as I engaged 'D' or 'R' (depending on how parked) ... the rpms drop around 400 and the engine stalls. Once the enine is warmed up and running ...... all ok .......... any ideas ???

  3. Problems with the stock breather... This is a home-brew fix to a problem on the 2nd Gen Cummins engines. The problem is the OEM crankcase vent is nothing more than a piece of hose mounted to the front of the gear case that elbows over and points down towards the ground. There is two versions of this. One is with a drip bottle mounted on the end of the hose and the other is without the bottle. In any case there is a TSB (09-002-02 Crankcase Breather Overflow) warning on extreme loss of oil from descending to steep of a slope while off-roading. This is true but it will also scatter oil all over the engine and radiator. This cause a second problem of overheat from dust and…

Ok I have been trouble shooting a hard starting/long cranking issue for almost 2 years now, owned the truck since 2006 2001 24V HO AIRDOG the week i brought it home and ever since Edge Stage4 Jammers I think injectors Newly rebuilt NV5600 (ChaCh$$$ng) 196K nose downhill, no problems level, takes over night nose high, takes a few hours to require a priming sequence necessary to start the truck, worse in the cold weather Lots of informative helpful threads out there and I have been through them all Last night pinched just at the VP44 inlet and just after the T return lines from the head and…

Guys, just put on a steering brace tonight, great mod for me. I spent about an hour taking my time and torquing everything to spec, as well as greasing other fittings while I was under there. Took it for a ride and steering is much tighter with less road wander and better feel. I did swap my steering gear for a reman NAPA back in September, but it already lost that lovin' feelin' - if you know what I mean. If anyone is interested its a one piece " Big D " brace, and I can give the link to anyone who Pm's me. Here's a pic, one piece 1/4" plate.

My truck started acting up recently. While driving it will stall or die. I have 19 psi fuel pressure, the fuel filter is new, no codes. It starts fine and idles fine, but once I'm driving it will stall out for just a second and come back or completely die. If it dies, then it won't start again for anywhere from hours to days. Any help is appreciated. 99 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9l diesel Here is a video of 6 times it stalled today. https://youtu.be/jkYmQii0C4c

So to start off be patient with me please, I’m new to diesels, and working on my own stuff in general. I’m young and don’t know a whole lot about anything. But a few months back I had to replace the vp44 on my 2001 5.9 Cummins. Me and my dad had to work on it at separate times since he was working nights and I was working days. Well we eventually got it off and the new one on. And when we got what we thought was everything plugged back in and ready to go we went to try it and the two wires that connect to the two studs on the same side of the intake horn for the grid heater we’re left undone and we’re laying against something. So when we started it I went to the front and…

Hi all, So I've had a slow to return brake pedal since I bought the truck a year ago, but I was hoping after a power steering and brake fluid flush it would be better. Well I finally got around to flushing them and so far it's not much if any better. It takes a solid 3 seconds for the pedal to return when the truck is warm and even more when cold. I even took apart and cleaned the valve on the high pressure power steering line at the reservoir. And I used almost 4 qts of ps fluid to do the flush. Now we did only pump the brake twice lightly while doing the ps flush, but it spewed almost a qt of ps fluid just from that so we figured that was good for the hydroboost si…

Finally took my truck into the shop to get them to yank the entire dash out and fix the damm diverter door. If I ever find the person who invented this method of heading/A/C, will tie them next to a fire ant mound and slather them with food. Not kidding... Anyways they got everything working fine, it was evidently only one door out of the three that was not working right but now they call and say that my fan clutch (which was working fine yesterday) is now not good and causing the A/C pressures to go too high when the truck is not driving. Interesting... it worked fine yesterday when they started working on it... Fan clutches are easy to change so am going to do that mys…

About a month ago my truck suddenly died. After two weeks of denial, I came to the conclusion that my VP44 had died. I got one from jkidd (great deal too) and installed it. After installing the new VP44, I can't believe how much quieter it is now. It still sounds like a VP44 truck just not nearly as loud. My wife and a couple of my neighbors commented on how much quieter it is now. The other thing is fuel mileage. Today I did a lot of town/city driving (84 miles with an average speed of 26 mph) and the ScanGauge showed 17.9 mpg. Previously, the best I could have hoped for this time of the year would have been mid 15's with this kind of stop and start driving and 2…

  11. Hey All - new paying member to the forum. Taking a break from the CF for a bit. Question is all too familiar I suspect. Trying to decide what to do with my 2nd gen to optimize my setup. I'm towing - or should say carrying a new truck camper (~2800 lbs) and lately going through the Washington state mountain passes and ridgelines. Lots of long slopes. My signature shows my mods but mainly I want to see if I'd be better served by increasing my injector size from 50HP to 100 to better pair with the Fleece HX35 63/65 turbo i'm running. I do see a bunch of lag even with the Quad tow tune I'm running that i had the guys @ DAP build for me. I control EGTs on long inclines mainly…

  12. This was a very heated and debated topic which I'm will to bring back up and report. I'm at 68k miles on the fluid. I've ran for 2 or 3 winters now and have zero issues shifting. Fluid operated greatly in temperature to -35*F and zero issues. I just checked the fluid level and color and it still like it was poured in from the bucket. Clear amber color and discoloring yet. By early summer I'll have 100k miles on this fluid and will check again on the color I might push past the 100k mark if the color is still bright and clear. Now that I'm travelling 250 miles every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday hauling @MoparMom to Dialysis treatments in Ontario, OR I've ha…

Hey all, if any of you saw my fuel in oil post, I'm planning to upgrade my injectors a tad bit. Planning to go with 150s from 125s and then I'll be done adding power to the truck unless I come across a lot of money lol. I'm debating on going "cheap" and getting 7x010 VCO from DAP. If I got this route, should I just do the remans or do I get the new Bosch bodies? What's the biggest difference in these injectors when it comes to brand? They all seem to be Bosch injectors with bigger holes... So I wonder why buy one that is more expensive? Other brand I'm looking at is Infinite, 1BadVP44 sells them and TJ seems to love their injectors. There's a chance my injectors are fine …

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram diesel 4x4 that has developed a transmission fluid leak at the transmission cooler line to hose "quick disconnect" connection, once I finally got the connection apart, there is an o-ring inside the hose side connector. Is the o-ring available and where? Anyone have the part number for the hose line with the connector, I have searched and cannot find a part number. I prefer a good quality part, as it is very difficult to get to the trans cooler end and I don't want to have to replace it again. There are two hoses and I can't remember now which one I need, I think it is the hose closest to the driver side, but if I had both part numbers I could fig…

So I finished the W-T ground mod and was finally able to rule out the injection pump as my no start problem. Sort of. I followed the diagnostic from Bluechip Diesel and others to do some basic electrical testing at the VP harness. I verified that pin 6 was grounding, and pin 7 had power at the RUN position on the ignition but NOT on the START position. I didn’t check the power situation on the wire to pin 5 after reconnecting the plug because I didn’t have power on 7 at the start position. I also ran test leads to pin 6 from battery ground and pin 7 (fused) to battery positive. Truck fired right up. I couldn’t find anywhere on a forum so far where someone explains what m…

  18. Ok. Me and my dad were compairing the 24v to the common rail 24v side my side. I went and pulled the dipstick for the oil and looked at it and my dad noticed that the oil on the stick has a tinge of green in it. So we were both thinking that anti-freeze was getting into the oil some how. But here is the thing. Oil level is not raising any, oil is does not look a milky color to it, And it does not smell like anti-freeze is in there. So I thought maby there is some diesel getting in there but it does not smell like it is. Plus I am still getting same fuel milage I always have. My anti-freeze looks clean and green no signs of oil in it. Truck runs normal. So this weekend I c…

I have read that it would be benifical to use a SO pump instead of the HO pump. Is there any truth to the statement? If so what are the pros of it? I'm probably about to order a new pump so now would be the time swap. Thanks, Kyle
