Hi Everyone,

 

I drove my truck today for the first time in a few weeks and it seems like my engine idle noise is louder then it should be (see attached video).  I know the Nv4500 makes more noise then the auto does in all driving conditions however it seems louder then I recall.   The manual swap has roughly 800 miles on it and the video is after driving for 35mins.

 

Does it sound like maybe I need to adjust the valves?  Whats your thoughts or post similar videos.

Pretty sure timing is controlled by the computers and with out some sort of tuner that will allow you to change the timing you are stuck with whats there. There are others here that know a whole lot more about this than I.

I am running my comp still. Maybe I need to unhook it from the truck and see if it makes a difference. I was more just curious if there was a way I could see what the timing is at a givin RPM. Will a scangauge show that kind of info?

Never saw any setting on my SG that would. You might just turn the Comp off. The only thing it does in the off mode is boost fool, unless there is something wrong with it. I ran mine off for a good while due to weak clutch. I got no extra power just boost fooling which I needed at the time.

Only the Quadzilla shows timing and allows for custom timing.

Many things may surprise you... Low boost + high timing = very noisy and rattling

Mid to high boost and high timing = fairly quiet 

low timing + low boost = fairly quiet

low timing + mid to high boost = extremely quiet. 

I've got a sound measure app on my phone later on today I'll measure the sound levels.

Either somethings different about this engine compared to the old engine, or your old engine was unusually loud for reasons of why you replaced it, or you just dont remember how loud it was, or.....you're comparing it to an old Ford.

Just for the fun of it. I got a sound level app for my phone and measured the noise levels on the truck. In the cab idling is about 58-62db. Still in the cab revved up to 2k on the tach it roughly 72db. At idle in front of the grill is about 80db. 

Curious, did this db app offer A weighting and C weighting settings?  I ask because 80 db is really quiet for the Cummins.  I remember testing my truck with a db reader and getting something like 90+ db at about 3-4 feet from the grill with the hood closed.

And the difference between 80 and 90 db is HUGE.

I agree with Katoom, my readings were A LOT louder db wise,
