  • Absolutely. Cody Albrecht.

  • Both drive shafts, input shaft on the transmission or a new clutch, 4x4 linkages to transfer case if not enough adjustment, and I'm sure some more things.    It also depends on how much powe

  • No sir, I am in Michigan. He is in Texas and yes they will take out of town work.

Question is what's involved in swapping a 4x4 4500 in place of a 5600.

Is it a direct swap or do you need a different driveshaft etc.

Hard choice to make.

Both drive shafts, input shaft on the transmission or a new clutch, 4x4 linkages to transfer case if not enough adjustment, and I'm sure some more things.

It also depends on how much power you want to play with. 5th gear doesn't like to hang on.

I understand that you are tired of fighting it, but you aren't really fighting the trans just crappy workmanship sadly.

You really arent any safer with a nv4500 when it comes to quality of the rebuild.

Now also due to the dumb asses  that designed the trans I have to replace one of the counter gears cause it chipped during pressing the innessarly over tight gears

NV5600 transmission has its own weakness with bearing lubrication, design faults, lack of parts because of a short life span. After seeing the NV4500 guts compared to the NV5600 I'd have to say the design was more complex for the NV5600 making repairing or rebuilding more challenging.

Well i get that they all have weakness, but dang the 10speed eaton don't even have gears pressed on that tight, my biggest issue is do I want to put that Much money in to it again

Whats the actual cost difference between a new nv5600 and a nv4500 plus the spares needed to get your truck retrofitted?

I can't imagine it would be much, especially if you take into consideration the time involved.

Ask @TFaoro he did the conversion.

Not quite a direct comparison since the G56 mounts up differently. He'd be able to use the same crossmember and clutch (if he wants to upgrade the input PS I have one for sale!)

Driveshafts cost me about $500 to have rebuilt, but it would be more expensive for him since they would lengthen the rear and shorten the front. Mine was the opposite.

Tcase actuator might need changed but I'm not sure. It wouldn't be hard, but if you tow a lot it's definitely a downgrade. Built properly with the correct amount of fluid an nv5600 is pretty hard to destroy. He'll just have to figure out the cost comparison and see if it's worth it.

Well let's see with the parts I need for the 5600 plus what I t on the 5600 to begin with 2in in it $5000 drive shafts would be my biggest issue, but I've not given up on the 5600 just yet, just considering possibilitys, first I have to see if I can source a bell housing first thing, if I t source that at a reasonable price then I have to look at other alternative ppssibilitys, and yea I could have the bell housing welded and machined but it'll be a littl pricy around here and if cost keeps rising the 4500 would make more sence

Good bellhousings? They are integral to the case are they not?

Nope. You can unbolt them. I have seen a few for sale before but dont remember where Ebay.

They can be replaced but finding a good one is the hard part, t&b claim to have new ones but I suspicious due to the flack they stoped making them in 2005,

Well finnaly made a decision, and due to the fact that I rarely tow over 6k and the hardness of finding parts and all aspects looked at I'm going ditch the over priced and over rated 5600 and go with a 4500 if I can find a used on to build my self  I do not trust any company to get I re man from after my experience,  like I've always herd one bad Apple can ruin it all

I've towed may times over 10,000 pounds of cargo (excluding the trailer weight). Fact is the two upper gears you use the most are on a 6 speed are the exact same gear on a 5 speed. Nothing gained and 5 speeds are cheaper to rebuild and no 5th gear nut is not a problem as long as the nut is properly torqued. IIRC the torque for the 5th gear nut is like 600 ft/lbs. So all these redneck youtube video beat the nut on with a hammer and chisel are going to fail anyways. Yes it's going to cost in tools to be able to do it properly but in the end the transmission is very strong.
