I've had this truck for about a year now. Ups and downs like every 2nd gen but overall I am very happy with this truck. Prepare for picture overload. Quick run down. A buddy posted this truck for sale on fb the day before the transmission decided to die in my grand prix (shocker). I bought this as to be a dd/tow rig when needed. The truck is originally from Texas and moved around a bit. I did find the owner on fb that brought the truck up to Indiana/Michigan and he provided some history on it. The box was trashed from day one. The owner I bought it from did not own up to rolling the truck onto it's side which cause bed damage and some door push in at the bottom. Nothing too crazy on the cab, door or fend. Box took the most of it. The engine, transmission and tcase are of unknown origin as Kurt (guy who brought it up to the north) sold it as a roller. It is a 180hp engine, 47re and DHD tcase. No clue how they found the correct drivetrain to stick back in it but they did. Lucky me. From day one this truck was weak. Even for a stock 12v. Ended up being the injection pump yayyyyyy. I got lucky and found a 180hp pump that had been gone through. Runs pretty well now. I will be going through the transmission to support my needs and have most of the parts already. Replacement/fixed stuff I have gone through; front brakes, ball joints, axle joints, track back, steering linkage, steering box, transfer case, front main seal, gauge wiring, dtt voltage box removal & wiring repair, thermostat, a/c line, water pump, stainless flex lines, led lights through out, projector retrofits, double din stereo, recovered head liner, 5% tint, two sets of wheels & tires and I think that is it. I am getting ready to do an axle swap to get better brakes as the single piston calipers are a JOKE. Now for the pictures and I'll try to get them in order.

What all needs to be done to clean the cooling system after a blown HG?

Not sure of proper way, probably some cleaner with water and flushing. All I did is ran garden hose through engine after it was assembled  (thermostat left out, just a gasket in place) few times, when it looked clean filled it up with water and drove around 10 minutes then did that few times, then drained everything out including heater core, because I'm anal I spent money on distilled water and filled it up with that ran another 10 minutes, then again drained everything out, finally filled it up with fleet guard antifreeze that's blue in color 60/40 Mix 60 being antifreeze.

Water and some sort of oil cutting soap. Oh and time. It sucks cleaning one out usually.

Gotcha, so basically the same as doing a coolant flush but with a little more potent soap. :thumb1:

Got anymore pictures of cylinder walls, curious to see comparing to mine. Are you going to surface and check the head, pulling any valves out

Nothing of the cylinders. There are a couple spots that do not look pretty but I also have no idea of the history on this engine. Head is at the machine shop. Waiting to hear back from him on it.

.010" off the head, which is not bad for not knowing the history. New Cummins .010" on its way. Pedestals are machined for the studs. Gonna be a busy weekend.

Dripley, you supposed to be out working on electrical not smearing the butter all over the keyboard.

Watching with great interest. I am going to be in the same boat in the near future. Got a little water weeping at the right front corner of the head. Have not pulled a head in over 40 years. Damn the butter full speed ahead!!

How much did it cost you to machine the pedestals?

I asked 2 shops today about doing them. One shop wouldn't do it, the other said it would be $40 each... Screw that.

Are you getting extra thick gasket to compensate

Medium thick. There is a .020" gasket as well. But yes, that is the idea.

We have a good standing relationship with a local machine shop. My dad and the shop trade work between each other. For that price pure diesel power sells pre-machined pedestals......If I had a vertical mill I would do them myself. It takes about hour between setup and cutting. Just to make sure they are parallel.

@dripley if you have any questions lemme know. I have these down to a pretty good science. I'll show eryone the proper way to install head studs as well.

I will appreciate all the help I can get. Like I said it has been a while. Now all I need is the time to do it. There is a still the machine shop in town that did the machine work for me 40 years ago. I think they still have a good rep. There is also a diesel performance shop with a machine shop that I am going to try and get by soon and check them out.
