Here are some pictures of a Derale 15870 cooler that I installed for a customer. I haven't installed any of the wiring in these photos, but the fan will be controlled by a relay. The temp switch is on the inlet side of the cooler, and will turn the fan on at 180 degrees, and back off at 165 degrees.

Here is the cooler (which is massive) and the bracket that I built to mount it to the frame.1849434183_IMG_1845(800x600).jpg.5516c454710456d85f0a28bec5116f9a.jpg

And the bracket mounted to the frame...

The cooler mounted to the bracket. By mounting it at an angle, I was able to tuck it up against the bottom of the cab nicely, but not have anything hanging below the frame rail.

And its associated plumbing. I used -8AN fittings and line throughout.

  • Yeah, I'm not a big fan of removing the heat exchanger, but I do understand why people do it. The stock cooling system on the 3rd Gen does have its weaknesses, hence my thermostat delete kit, but I do

  • On 2G trucks, I tend to mount them behind the front bumper on the left side, tucked up by the outer bracket; tends to work well there.  Very nice job on the 3G, @Dynamic

  • NO, if you put the fans on a thermostatic switch, you'll be just fine.

I wonder how that cooler will hold up if the truck is used off the pavement? Mud being slung at it.

I've got some ranchers up here that have automatics and like them for the reason of offroad and don't have to worry about clutching. It would be nice to have a solution for them as well where a cooler could be remote mounted and handle some offroad usage without failing.

Was this in place of the heat exchanger? Or did they just need that much cooling??

No. I added it in addition to the factory coolers. He wanted the extra capacity because he tows a huge trailer up some winding back country roads with some pretty vicious hills. Plus, the 3rd Gen cooling systems are pretty marginal when you start adding power and mods.

I can tell you that this setup is a heat shedding monster!

Ah ok makes sense. Figured you wouldn’t be installing anything unnecessarily.

Mainly asked because you see so many people trying to replace the heat exchangers on the 2nd gens when they’re seeing ‘higher’ temps, even when empty or lighter loads, always blaming the stock cooling system.

This gentleman just wanted some additional capacity, and OH BOY did he get it! That setup works amazing!

I'm still wondering about the road debris problem and how will it stand up fo muddy roads and snow. If this set up can withstand that I know several ranchers down here that would love to jump on stuff like this.

I guess it would depend upon the application. The most this truck will ever see is gravel roads.

That mostly what the local ranchers here run is gravel roads but then dive out in a pasture to roll hay bails out. Pull back out climb to the next pasture and repeat again. Most out here flood water the pastures so it can get rather soupy for mud. Lot of the old tymers had to give up the manuals and went to automatics. This is rather harsh on automatics being they never really hit lock up for many miles and climbing or offroad in mud add the heat.

I mounted one in my 95 after the compounds. The spare tire mount had rusted off so it went in place of it. That thing did some crazy good cooling!

I have a similar cooler I was thinking about fitting on my 2nd gen but it has smaller twin fans, something like the bracket you made should work, Is it possible to overcool ? Mine is stock 47re which is next on the list to do
