Hello all,

This year is not a good year for my 24v.  I have been having some issues with the 47re in the truck.  It would sometimes seem like it would skip 1st gear so this past weekend I changed out the Gov sensor and transducer, but now I have no 1st gear even if shifted manually.  I adjusted both bands to spec and trans seems to just glide into other gears.  The atf was dark and had dark sludge on the magnet, but nothing excessive.   Have the clutches burnt out?  I'm at the point I may trade it in on a 2008 Ram 2500 with 6.7 and g56..

What do you guys think?

Tim

Better hope she doesn’t get to ride in a 2019, you might be trading both your 2nd gens in.    at least mine was that way, but I had to remind her that we still had to eat and pay the mortgage

  • When you say no first gear, is it slipping in first? Starting in second? Starting in third?   Either way, here's a snip from another site, which either comes from the FSM or ATSG manual.

  • Was the accumulator spring broken?   Is tv operating normally cable not broken?   Does it down shift at all on its own when coasting to a stop with or ith out brake input?

NO LOW GEAR (MOVES IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR ONLY)
1. Governor Circuit Electrical Fault. 1. Test with DRB® scan tool and repair as required.
2. Valve Body Malfunction. 2. Remove, clean and inspect. Look for sticking 1-2 shift valve, 2-3 shift valve, governor plug or broken springs.
3. Front Servo Piston ed in Bore. 3. Inspect servo and repair as required.
4. Front Band Linkage Malfunction 4. Inspect linkage and look for bind in linkage.

I dont know if it is slipping, I've never experienced transmission slip before.  You have to get truck to 2k rpm before it will start moving.  All I did this past weekend was replace the 2 sensors, changed the 3-4 accumulator spring adjust bands per manual and filter change.  I am at the point where am not sure it's worth to sink anymore money in truck.

Need more info. Does it suddenly engage and take off normally at 2K rpm or does it just seem lazy. Slipping means the rpms flare up when the pedal is pressed hard or pulling hard. Is reverse working normally?. Lazy usually means electrical issues. Scan Codes. Remove clean and reinsert the connector plug on the tranny also check the control cable. The second gear band linkage and anchor are known weak spots and can bend or break.

It is lazy.  I can manually down shift to 2nd and then to drive and it when shift into 3rd but no 1st at all.  When in drive it will shift from 2-3 like normal but then slide into o/d.  I feel like it may be a bigger issue than linkage.  Maybe time to upgrade to a bigger truck that fits family of 5 better.

Is tv operating normally cable not broken?

Does it down shift at all on its own when coasting to a stop with or ith out brake input?

Does tranny slip with tourge converter locked in 3rd? Can you tell when tourqe converter locks.

Did you put atf+4 back in it?

A new tranny is still much cheaper than trading in on a 2008 theyl give you next to nothing for yours.

If a 4door is wanted more then I'd recommend getting a new truck. Otherwise I'd not be one bit hesitant to put 5 grand towards a tranny.

To me it sounds like a flush on tractor transmission fluid may help since you mention sludge.  You may also be plugging the new filter quickly and its having a hard time picking up fluid under low rpms.

I've gone back to old style filter on my 02. The 98 older filter has a much bigger area it picks fluid up from.

To me a tranny running sludgy dark fluid has been neglected for a long time  and was never slated to run for a long time. But could potentially pull out and live longer with some tractor transmission fluid cycled through it and finger crossing.  May take a few filter changes cycling out fluid.

It may also need the bands replaced. It can be done.

I feel its 50/50 weather or not it can be revived depending on how unhealthy it really is and if it's making pressure like it should.

If a pressure gauge shows 50is at idle and 90ish locked in 3rd near wot. throttle I think I'd be willing to gamble 100 bucks on some filters and cycling fluid.

If pressure is really low like 30 at idle and 70 locked it may be just done. But then again that sludge is spread throughout so it may come back to life ounce parts and passages begin to clear out.

I did not notice any tranny mods in your sig. :( that's alot of motor for stock tranny to hold long term

Good luck

I agree it's too much motor for a stock trans and is likely worn out. However, if it's starting in second or third, it's gotta be valve body related. @Collinst15 I would take the pan off and run through everything you touched and double check everything.

What would happen if  plastic ball melted in the valve body.

One way valve in transmission cooler line?

Check your main tranny plug I just replaced one at work it was melted. Then I replaced the toasted 47re with a new one and it was pre toasted 3rd time now and already had to install a new gov pressure solenoid and sensor. Lol I also replaced the speed sensor. If you don't have a pressure gauge get a friend from the dodge dealer to ride with you and watch pressures. Maybe the new solenoid was doa they seem to be junk sometimes. The brand new one from the transmission manufacturer was reading crazy temps and hardly any pressure I replaced it with a mopar part and it seems to be good now.

Good evening everyone,

After some thought on the transmission issue.  I have decided to step away from the diesel game and sell my 1999.  I really do not have a need for a diesel at this time in life.  I am sure I will return to the Cummins platform once funds allow to keep up with the maintenance and repairs that come with diesel truck ownership.

I will still be an active member of the forum as much as I can as this is an awesome resource for the Cummins platform.

Thanks,

Tim

Another one bites the dust :(

Maintenance really isnt bad. I've been keeping mine going for 15 years and find high mileage gas vehicles cost mre to repair and keep going.

my transmission is the only big ticket item I've dealt with. I kinda consider it a consumable part that will need replaced or refreshed every couple hundred thousand.

Evan,

Trust me I love my 1999, but with 3 kids under 4 who are still in bulky car seats it gets tight in the cab with a family of 5.  It is not a confirmed decision to sell it.  I may hang on to it and slowly save the funds to rebuild/replace transmission and possibly rebuild the 24v or swap a 12v or common rail in it (I have a source for both engines).

I have a place to store truck to work on it if I choose to keep it.

If its in great shape hold onto it. They are retaining their value.

Plus at this rate, anything newer will have more issues usually, reliably is always suspect.

Man I just love my two second gen 24's. Just love that purr....... I drove an electric thing one day and  hated it, you couldn't tell it was running. Sheeballonies! no sound of rev nothin' It was way too weird for me. Everytime I get in mine its still like the first day I bought it. You know the dang things are for a man for sure, but guess who always wants to go in my trucks to go out for dinner.... yep, the wife. Everytime she says, can we go in your truck? I really like it she says and she is a real lady. :thumb1:

Good day everyone,

I have decided to sell the 2nd gen.  It has more issues than the trans and I do not want to dump any more funds into the truck.  I am in the process to putting it back to stock and will list it in the coming week. I'll get back into the diesel game in a few years once kidos are out of bulky car seats.

Thanks,

Tim
