I've been thinking about cleaning up and painting under the hood. I've googled some pics of Cummins engines painted up and looking sharp. Just wondering if anyone on here has done it. So, if you've detailed and cleaned up your Cummins or painted it up to make her pretty post a pic. I'd like to see them just for some ideas. 

Its not a Cummins per say, but when I did a diff service on the chevy last time I did a smiley face and when I rebuilt the engine I painted the engine orange with grey metallic accents. Mind, the Chevy is dirty currently. I've only laid eyes on it twice in the last 6 months.

 

It really does look better than the pictures make it, and not being blacked out under the hood. It gives a real WOW factor when popping the hood. Certainly more eager to pop the hood now.

 Usually I'm the only one under the hood but I would.like to have things clean maybe even painted up a bit. Also it makes it easier sometimes to spot oil leaks and such.

I just enjoy opening the hood to check the oil now. I've never had the truck in a show or anything. I can already see the intake leaking in the valley again. I think it is warped. I've had issues with it for years.

 

Since you’re showing off a Chevy, this is the engine in my son’s 64 pickup. He has a long way to go as he still needs to get computer to work on a budget.

That looks really nice. I've always had a soft spot for bowtie orange. Looks like he did grey accessory pulleys too. 

 

As a side note... My friend was helping with the rebuild. He is a bit less motivated than I and was wanting to just throw some paint on the bare metal. I got him not to. Wiped everything down fresh from the machine shop, several coats of primmer, several coats of paint.

Forgot I took this picture, shame it gets covered up with all the accessories.

 That kind of clears something up for me. I was wondering if one should primer before engine paint. Wasn't sure if the primer is heat resistant or if it would blister due to the heat.

I used part store engine paint and primmer.... good to like 500* or so with no bake time. I have worked it and havent had any issues in 2 years/ 4000 miles.... Its not exactly a daily driver anymore.

 

All that said, I was handed a bare block. Paint was gone do to machine shop cleaning it. I was very paranoid about oil being on it so I cleaned the whole thing with acetone on a rag. Got a lot of stuff off.

 

If I was going over old paint, I think Id just rough it up with some 120 grit, clean it good, then paint it.

Here's the engine in my mustang, I pulled it a couple years ago after a motor mount broke and got wrapped up in "while I'm at it" syndrome.  It used to be purple and yellow, decided to go copper and black this time.  

 Copper and black go well together, that's one of the main reasons I bought my bike. Love the color scheme.

 

I don’t have a picture of my truck, away from it for awhile. But I have the industrial valve cover painted red, the Cummins logo shined, and then clear coated. I’d like to paint the intake horn, alt. Braket, and shine up the compressor wheel. And I’d be happy. 
 

for now he’s a dirty engine bay, and full of things not to have!

You’d be correct,  needed bigger headers To keep up with air flow. got tired The in frame ones, held a lot of heat under the hood and the drivers side was always a mess. 

I never done anything per se to dress up my truck. The only thing I've done is kept my engine bay clean. When a leak occurs find it and stop it. Wash down the engine when I wash the truck. Lately I need to do that more really. Pretty dirty. Typically I don't bother with a bunch of paint or dress up. Just keeping it clean is just a big crowd pleaser for most. When you own a 18 year old truck and its still clean under the hood and in the cab. Most people are shock when I open that hood and there is a clean stock looking engine. 

I was under the truck not long ago changing oil and noticed some rust in the side of the block. Most engines do this I understand that but, I did spray some black pain on it just because.

 I planning on doing injectors in the spring so I was thinking of cleaning up and painting the valve cover. Red possibly to resemble the N-14 cummin which is the engine that I had in a Peterbilt years ago and made me love and respect the Cummins engine. 

 Not gonna go crazy with paint and polish under there.

 I do try to keep the engine bay clean as well, when I wash the truck the engine at least gets a good rinse.
