Dyna beads

Posted

I've had the Toyo tyres on my truck now for about 2 years and within the last 3 months or so I noticed an out of balance wobble starting to get worse there was several speeds where it was worse and the tyres were wearing very odd like the front edge of all threads wearing off.

When I had the tyres fitted the guy told me the rims or tyres were way out of balance and that he had to use a lot of weight to even get close and to be fair the truck was never 100% and had a slight wobble over 60mph that settled out about 65mph.

It was getting worse so I decided to try beads Dyna beads to give them a name, called the company here in the UK that I presume imports them from the USA ( I think)  guy was very helpful and honest and he told me maybe they won't fix the balance problem I have because of the amount of weight my rims have on them.

The guy advises me to try 5oz in each through the valve first, an 8oz pack per wheel is recommended for my rim and tyre size but due to already having weights on the rims he said to go low to start.

So each wheel one at a time on the jack, valve core removed and valve at the bottom, the kit came with a small bottle and a tube that fits over the valve stem, the beads are small enough to flow through the valve, all four got 5.1oz actually.

It has made a huge difference and now there is just one patch at 51mph where there is a very slight feeling that it just might wobble a little but this has gone at 54mph.

Going to speak to the guy Colin and see what he thinks as to whether I put the other 2.9oz in each tyre and keep the weights or take the weights off.

I'm about due to rotate anyway so might just see what it's like when I go back to front, the deal with swapping to another corner is you hit the tyre with a hammer as this dislodges the static stick that keeps the beads stuck to the inside of the tyre in the correct area as they need to relearn and stick differently depending on disc/drum weight and balance so the wheel is always dynamically balanced for the corner it's fitted to and if any do not stick when stopped they are in the right place before a wobble speed is reached

Sorry you got the ticket Wil440. 2 inch ruts sounds like a bad road and maybe the cause of the cords showing out the side of the tire.

No the road surface wasn't the cause of the cords showing that was just stupidity on my part

this particular wheel leans inwards due to the suspension rubbers being worn.... maybe you guys don't have axles like these, or maybe they are used but on low weights

The picture IF it comes out right way up .... where the black peice is there is a bush into the axle tube, when this wears it can cause the top of the wheel to lean in which will wear the inner edge of the tyre

Torsion axles used on RVs and utility trailers out here too. Never did like that design of axle for that reason. After a time the rubber degrades from Ozone and then the spring action weakens and the axles could lean in too. Never seen one but I can see how it could over time. I know even the old leaf springs can fail just the same too. Broken spring bolts, u-bolt failures, broken leaf springs, damaged or broken balance beam (multi-axles).

Interesting, we’ve had a couple torsion axle trailers and haven’t had that happen. I have seen the spindle bend where it attaches, which can happen torsion or spring.

The main thing I don’t like about torsion axles is that they need to be loaded level (not horrible) to have even load distribution,  but more importantly loaded to 65% of their rating or more to not ride harsh.

As far as converting your bumper pull trailer to a fifth wheel:

Can it be done? I'm sure it probably could be.

Will it be cost effective? I kinda think it may not be. Might be easier and safer to just sell one and buy the type of trailer you want.

Or find an old fifth wheel camper and put the box from the trailer you have now onto that frame?

I saw a article on bumper to gooseneck conversion in a farm magazine many years ago. I bet you could find it if you did internet search.

I'm pretty sure it would be cost effective here..... 5th wheel flatbeds are £10k  plus up to £20k

I messaged the guy who I moved a 5th wheel last week I know he bought it for £1500, paid me £500 to move it, he wants £4500, I offered him £2100 which is a quick £100, of course he said no

I'll search for it.... thanks

This company is probably cost prohibitive for you but there are pictures to give you an idea for fabrication. Also search "converting bumper pull to gooseneck" and alot of videos and pictures come up. (You probably already have)

I found time to take a look at the link, I could either make that or did a search on converting and I can make that too  :thumb1:
