Hey fellas. I currently have an 02 but have a chance to upgrade to an 08 with about 30 K on it . I haven't really payed to much attention to the newer Dodges so I'm going to ask here...what's the Pros, what's the Cons. Is this model year something I want to get into or not? Would like to know about engine, driveline...evrything anyone want to give an opinion on. Do these have this after burner exhaust thing on them I hear people talking about, is it something that can be removed easily

The mods may need to move this thread to the 4th gen. section........seeing that you said it's an '08.I'll tell you this though..........If you live in a free state that allows "deletes" etc...........the 6.7 Cummins is a winner. I've heard of 21-23mpg with deletes. And only 16-17mpg with with them. That's highway/empty of course!!!

O sorry, I thought 3rd gen was 2003-2010 ? Not really sure whats aloud around here, but I do know there are no emmission tests done when i go for inspections. I've been reading alot on the turbo issues, DPF issues, mileage..etc. Just wanted to ask in here for an opinion also. Alot of owners say the VP44 trucks are junk also, but i don't have to many issues with mine...knock on wood! Many type can be junk so I'm keeping that in mind when i review

I had always thought/read that the "4th" generation started with the introduction of the 6.7litre Cummins in '07.5 model year. Just saying..........but if I'm wrong, I appologize.

I thought the same thing till someone corrected me too... The 6.7L was introduced in the 3rd gen body and then the 4th gen came out in 2010... Kind of like some people think the 94-98 is 2nd gen and 98.5-02 is 3rd gen because of the fuel system change... :duh:Common mistake...As for the truck Dobbienut... Do the deletes (DPF and EGR), change the cam (smog cam), and get a Smarty to tune up the ECM. Then you'll be all set up. Just stay after the injectors and don't let it wipe out a cylinder. Injectors are expensive so I highly suggest you invest in a killer fuel system (extra filters!).

Dobbienut...the 6.7 is a pretty decent engine if you service it regularly. Do the full egr delete, the dpf delete, put a programmer on. And have a safe time driving. I have recently been forced into working on these trucks. Just did all these but put a H&S mini maxx tuner on a friends 07.5 and he went from seeing the 16-18mpgs on hwy to seeing 24-28 mpgs. What you spend one 1 set of injectors I can buy enough injection pumps to travel 400,000 to 600,000 miles. (2-3 VP44's) (Personal opinion) One of the main reason I will not upgrade trucks... In my mind we've come around a full loop a second time. Back in the days of muscle cars and big blocks we did the same them from the 60's to the 80's. Making massive HP/TQ for the time and them by the 70's EPA/CARB stepped in and turned everything into a turd with all the smog garbage. So here we are with the diesel truck doing the same thing. So like my Charger I'll hold out with my 2002 till something comes my way that I consider worth buying and won't empty my savings account to change injectors or some other major part. Let's say right now I could swallow a VP44 replacement if need be but replacing injectors in a Common Rail I'd end up selling the truck.

Thanks for all the information fellas. Wow, had no idea the pricing on injectors until I just looked . As of right now my truck isn't really causing me any major issues, I just wanted to move up to something that is newer and drives better. I've dumped alot of money into mine the last 2 years, and I can say there is still some things even though I have spent the money on to fix, hasn't really satisfied me yet. The one major one is the steering...had my front end all checked over, spent the money for the Borgeson gear and at first I though wow, this thing steers awesome, but after driving it for a bit, it still has something that isn't right and i'm getting tired of searching for it. Soon going to have to do the clutch/PP and some other things, so i thought this truck has come along, and maybe it's time to consider moving up. In saying that, I don't want to go from the fat to the fire so i though I would ask here what i'd be getting into. The truck's an 08 with about 45 thousand Km on it I think he said and i can get it for about 20 grand. Truck looks mint from a walk by I did one day (didn't know it was coming for sale so didnt look hard). In the USA thats probably an average deal but here in Canada it's cheap . Most i see are going for $25-30. Haven't decided what i'm doing yet...have some reading to do and trying to find on here a dpf/egr delete kit complete

A 2008 is a 3rd gen, 4th gen is 2010+ as has been previously stated. The 2008's are a mixed bag. If they were kept up to date on dealer flashes they are generally trouble free. Injectors are not usually the issue on 6.7's, it's the turbo and then really only with early flashes or LOTS of city/empty miles on short trips. The fuel filter on the 6.7 is a great OEM filter, which is 5um absolute. The injectors are also of a much stronger design, and the rail pressure is lower on average (thou higher at high loads) than a 5.9. If you want to delete than a 6.7 is a great motor, even in 100% stock trim it's not bad.. just lower economy, and a dirty intake.

Yep the front steering is still the same on the newer trucks as the second gens except maybe a better trac bar is all On a side note, I had a shop that I've been going to for over 30 years tell me that I didn't need ball joints nor tie rod ends. That's after I paid for a way to drop off the truck and get home. I then had to pay for a ride back to get the truck home. I did not like that. I had a partially wasted day since I missed some work. I talked with Source Automotive and they said we'll do the work on saturday that way it'll be easier to get a ride. They said 3 of the BJ's were dry and rusty. After they did the BJ's and tie rods the truck drives like a dream. I mean literally drives like a brand new truck I have the DSS and the 03 trac bar too.
