on my 01 I replaced the primary pump to a fass ddrp,then got the 47re overhauled,I presently have 35" tires on ,seems gutless my turbo pressure is roughly 20 psi,my diff"s are 3.55,don't want to go extreme maybe 100 hp max.what should I focus on next??

I would add a module to the truck for now. That will wake it up for 120 HP worth in either Edge juice or Edge Comp, Quadzilla, TST, etc. That will give you fuel management and boost fooling in one shot.

 

After that you can start stepping up through the injector sizes to what you want for total power.

Just FYI for everyone, myself included.  What was involved in the overhaul of the trans?  I would agree with Mike though, these trucks respond well to simple things.

Too many people jump right in and get "Big" everything. Big Turbo, Big Injectors, Big Exhaust, etc. Diesels are just like gasoline engines. You can take a stock V8 engine with a 2 barrel carburetor and then drop a 1050 CFM 4 barrel on and expect it to work. Same with diesel you can't just go out and drop a large injectors in these expect good out come. I alway suggest a fueling module first because this gives you a fuel management for the future. So now as you desire larger injectors you have means of controlling fuel and smoke for the future. But always there will be a point where you fuel demands will require more turbo. But at that point you'll be looking into doing studs, fire ring, o-ring the head, etc. Because are you demands go up the more you have to fix the weak links.

 

The other thing about this is as you slowly modify you can see your efficiencies of your tuning and follow that path then. But if you jump and go Big everything you most likely fight to get the efficiency back up from a low point. Rather common. Oh Yeah... Smoke is not a sign of power its a huge sign of inefficiency!

just got the tranny done(326000 km) billet torq convertor(heavy duty multi plate)in the tranny  HD clutches,bands,service press switch & press sensor,shift kit& filters,trans cooler flush.Is the smarty a good choice for programmer,should I do the intake filter and exhaust before the programmer?My fuel for now no mods I get 19 at idle and roughly 14 wot.I was thinking about increasing the fuel lines to the primary pump,the puck style so you don't have to remove the tank cause I'll probably run low in fuel pressure with the programmer.

You will see a maximum gain of 65hp and it will decrease the torque management. With a light foot, the smarty is very efficient and a great addition. That being said if you want more power and do not want to stack multiple programmers go with something like an edge comp.

I would like to jump in and just say:

 

Before putting a timing/fueling box on the truck, I would really be looking for a decent set of gauges to put in the truck first. At least fuel pressure, Trans temp, and EGT. This way you know exactly how the truck is running when you do go with a programmer.

 

Now, for the programmer, Smarty is always a good one to go with. You get the high idle software with it and smarty seems to be one of the higher quality programmers in my opinion. The Edge comp is also a great tuner for our trucks. All power and no gauges/sensors to mess with. Just plug it in and go. The comp is also nice because you can adjust it on the fly, where with the smarty you cannot. I believe the Edge comp adds the most power compared to any other programmer too. The Edge Juice might add just as much power but then you have to deal with settings, sensors, built in gauges and all that stuff. The comp is very simple and easy to use.

 

Just my 2 cents on the subject. Also, I know others that dont care for it, but I really love my hot unlock with my edge. This thing fuel hard!

I presently have the fuel & boost,I'll shop around for the tranny and egt temp than go with the SMARTY,as of now the truck seems gutless, when I bought the truck it had 31" tires went with 35's would that make a big difference power wise?

What make of gauges is best to set up on the pillar?

Tires do cause a difference because the radius is greater, creating the need for more power to do the same amount of work. 

Issopro and Autometer are both quality gauges. Stay away from glowshift!!

Thanks Tyler,your profiles shows you have the Smarty s03 do you recommend that one with my 35's or should I go with a different programmer,don'y really need much power just enough to pull a fifth wheel camper.I kind of like the smarty has you can enable high idle and you can pick up troubleshooting code.. 

I honestly don't think it's worth the full retail price... That being said I picked mine up for 275 on craigslist, and I recommend you try to do the same. Just make sure it is unlocked when you buy it! I think it's the perfect towing programmer! When my truck was stock I couldn't push the EGTs past 1200 no matter how long my foot was to the floor. It gave the perfect bump in power that these trucks need.

 

And now that I'm not stock at all......With the mods you see in my signature it made 372hp and 801 ft-lbs of torque on level 7.

For what you want, I would have to go with the Smarty, as an added feature, you can recalibrate your speedometer & odometer. THen, later, if you want some more, you can put bigger injectors in.

Your right the gauges are close to$500. where can I find Craigslist?Smarty was my first choice I'll stick to my guns,thanks...For the receipe  thanks I'm looking at aroud 300 hp I'll start with the gauges  then Smarty

If the little more is all your after then the smarty will be the best upgrade. I ran a smarty alone on my truck for 2 yrs before i went off the deep end .

Gotta remember with your 35's you are making your effective rear gearing about 3.00's rather than 3.55's

 

 

That's gonna make a huge difference in towing and how "gutless" the truck feels.  If you are going to be towing anything heavy I would consider regearing ( to 4.10's) or dropping tires back to oem size.

Another note on the smarty is that it can recalibrate the speedo for non standards tires In addition to having high idle and 3 cyl high idle enabled.

The order I would suggest is as follows.

 

1. save up some cash

 

2. go to dealers or shop the net for a newer diesel or even gas pickup as they have more power than the old diesels did, my 2010 5.7 hemi would run circles around my 02 cummins when it was stock..

 

3. pick out your favorite one.

 

4. make the deal and enjoy it.
