  1. From Stefan of DTT (reprinted from tdr): As we have a lot of high hp trucks i can tell you that these guys are not breaking flexplates,I know Doug Smith did break one but we discovered when he came to our shop that he was missing a dowel pin. Needless to say, that shop never touched another tranny of ours after that. Mis=alignment of tranny to engine and the weight of the billet covers are what we see breaking these flexplates. If you ever have to deal with a broken flex plate make sure you replace your oem factory dowel pins with a set of new dowel pins, chrysler part # 4429678, you will need 2 of these. They are about $5 each. I checked with Bill on this and he said most consumers are not aware of this small fact. The converter in the Dodge Cummins Diesel is centered by the flexplate not the crankshaft. The pilot of the converter whether you buy brand A,B or C doesnt matter is 1. 8 inches. The center of the flexplate is approx. 1. 8 but the actual center of the crankshaft is 1. 945, think of it like this, if you had a standard tranny and your input shaft bearing was not centered would you have problems shifting your truck. In other words everything has to be centered properly to make things work properly and last. Guys seem to understand that the pilot bearing is critical to the standards but dont seem to realize the centering of the TC in the automatic is just as critical. So do not let shops try and convince you that its hp and torque that is breaking these flex plates. Things to check for when you have a broken flexplate, Dowel Pins, either kinked damaged or missing dowel pins. You can check to see if you have a missing dowel pin without removing the transmission, remove the 3rd bell housing bolt from the bottom of the transmission( dont worry the tranny is held in by a lot more than 2 bolts, and insert a magnet, the magnet should grab on to the dowel pin. Since the tranny case and the adapter is made out of aluminum the magnet will not grab onto either one of those pieces. When the tranny is out , since you have to take it out any way to fix the broken flexplate , the pilot of the TC must be checked for any damages, ie) nics , burrs, or damage to the hub of the TC or the pilot of the TC. If there is any damage , you cannot sand away the burrs, you must replace the pilot of the TC. Trying to sand or file actually makes the odds increase of having a second broken flexplate. Check your flexplate ID, it shoud measure 1. 8 , since all manufacturers have a plus or minus in tolerances verify the measurement. More rotating mass is more likely to break an oem factory flexplate . HP and torque have very little to do with it. Bill has made this very clear when training , the torque converter is only turning the pump, whether you have a 200hp truck or 700 hp truck, it is still only turning the pump. As for tighter fluid coupling causing broken flex plates I am sure you were joking but some guys might actually believe you . Tranny guys know the shock of a tighter fluid coupling is felt from the turbine back not forwards. Since the turbine is free floating in oil inside the TC and not physically attached in any way shape or form to the flexplate it would take one heck of a load to even come close to even nicking the flexplate. And i know the Dodge trucks we are discussing are not equipped with transbrakes.
  2. Limp mode and not shifting 1st to 2nd can be two different things. I don't think we have enough info to know.It is really a good idea to upgrade to the borg warner gp solenoid if you can.
  3. I'd rather live in Florida and be under water than snowed in up north for 6 months a year! Would you be leaving the great white north if you thought the caldera was about to erupt? Are you leaving? If not, does that mean you don't believe your own prediction? That is the logic your trying to use on me. Apparently, I would have moved if I really believed in global warming. Earthquakes and volcanoes were studied, sources were cited, trends were noted, etc, etc. When it came time to consider global warming the evening news was enough. Why be so thorough on one subject and so easily dismiss another? Is the caldera more likely to erupt before the polar bears go extinct? Do you hate bears? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/09/130925-global-warming-pause-climate-change-science-ipcc/ I think there are a multitude of events that could happen in our lifetime and even more that will happen in geological time. None of us can know which will happen first. We can, however, all take steps to lower greenhouse gasses. I'm not aware of a way to lower the risk of a caldera but if there was I'd do that too. The resistance to my initial statement seems very selfish to me. If we use up all the natural resources and damage the environment what will our kids have? What will their kids have? Mike tells me that he can only cut down dead trees. In this manner they protect the forest for the future. Great idea. Why can't we treat other things like this? Even if you don't believe in global warming you can probably see that pollution isn't great. What harm is there in being a steward of your surroundings? Is that something that makes you want to laugh?
  4. Check out Galdiater E rated trailer tires.
  5. The plates are moving north and south across the san adreas fault. Nothing is sinking or pulling apart. I'm sure you know that. I totally agree with the notion that technology brings things in our lives we wouldn't normally see and with that comes the temptation to try to explain them. Certainly, recorded history as far as earthquakes go probably isn't that old. Climate data is pretty easy to find though and global warming is a proven fact. I hope Mike doesn't get blown up. I'm down if Florida if anyone needs somewhere to go! :hyper:
  6. I currently pay over $700 a month for a family of four. With o care it goes to $628. My kids dental also becomes covered. A lot of people have been quoting this 1/3 raise in prices. That number was derived from fictitious medical plans and isn't really the reality. I see see your point about not wanting to pay for services you feel are substandard. I totally agree with that. I don't know if we can let a few bad doctors ruin for all of us though. I guess if that is your position you can opt out pretty cheaply. If you're ever in an accident I bet you'll be grateful that service is available at any time.
  7. Hitler wasn't a communist. I am also pretty sure his message wasn't that the Germans should embrace govt benefits. My health insurance cost will be lower with Obama care. It seems to me that people that don't currently purchase insurance are the most upset. But these are the people that end up having problems and raising rates for those of us that do pay for insurance. It would be better for me if everyone paid in because I already purchase insurance as a self employed person. My kids will get dental coverage with Obama care and that could be a huge savings down the road.I am totally confused how a union person could be against this type of bill. Aren't health care discounts one of the main reasons to pay your dues? How about you get the discount without having to pay in? Are you saying that you like the idea of the union deciding your health care options but no one else? I'm not very well versed in how unions work but the whole idea of a UNION seems in line with universal care. For everyone that buys insurance now I'd be interested to know how they will be personally effected. anoldbiker,The statement that the govt collects more money very misleading. People are paid more now than ever before but money does not have the same value as it had before though so more of it is not necessarily more. Inflation outpaces income growth so the imbalance is not to the positive side. wild and free,Who else but an insurance company would help draft an insurance bill? I wouldn't be much help. These statements are meant to excite people but don't further the discussion. You know what makes me sick? My state, Florida, decided to bow out and not negotiate with the insurance companies. Now I will pay more because Marc Rubio is trying to make a point. I could care less what his point is. His ridiculous stance doesn't cost him anything. It's pretty easy for him since he gets free health care.
  8. Maybe I'm missing something but when did everyone become so afraid of a little smoke? My new trucks won't roll any coal but my 01 will. There are quite a few prius owners that know that well. Just put a switch on the map sensor and it will smoke like freight train.I'm really surprised that the OP was scolded so hard. I guess I'd get scolded too if your truck could keep up with mine!! :tease:Black smoke don't mean it's broke!
  9. Starter fluid is not a good idea. You can blow up your motor and that would be bad.
  10. Did you notice how many of those were rental trucks? Rental trucks are the most dangerous things on the road. My advice is to stay away from them at all times.
  11. AAA membership is the most valuable tool you can have. Trust me, no one does more long trips than I do.Your trailer is more likely to fall apart than your truck. I'd have a spare trailer hub (with bearings) and a tire. I'd also have the tools to fix it.
  12. I just got the cheap ones from the auto part store that clamps all the wires at once.
  13. If that fixed the problem then your apps is going bad or you had a loose battery cable. Running the truck with the multi meter would have shown this also. Sometimes the reset works for a long time and sometimes you have to reset it a lot. I kept a 1/2 wrench in my door because it happened so many times. When you need a new apps: http://www.dodgecumminsapps.com
  14. I run the fleet shocks from napa.
  15. Did you measure the voltage going to the pump?
  16. Have you checked the electrical output into the pump? A dirty connection can cause low pressure.
  17. "Rough Riding Ranchos!" That's what they're called. Terrible ride.
  18. 1-2 is controlled by the governor pressure solenoid.
  19. I suppose we'll hear the VP44 is a good injection pump next.
  20. This dude is running a smarty and not tapping the pump. In my truck, 100's never got hot and I wasn't tapping the pump either.Seriously wild and free, how is my boat?
  21. You have to decide how you want to run your truck. I set mine up to tow well. You can get a super b special but it will spool slowly and won't be great for towing. If mileage is a factor you may want to stay under control a bit here. The super b regular is a ton of turbo to begin with. I'm not sure why you would want the special. Besides new injectors you would need to tap the pump with a new programmer. Don't forget a built trans in there somewhere too. Seriously if you tow keep it simple. The super b will run great with 100's and the smarty. You will not believe how hard it will pull hills and get better mileage doing it. If that's not enough tap the pump and run an edge comp. The turbo will still be fine in that setup as well. If you stay with the 275's look at the he351. It would be a mild upgrade and be cheap as well. I changed my oil every 20k miles for the first half million miles. I started it cold and towed 20k lbs up a hill. I turned it off hot all the time. If anyone's truck should have blown up it was mine. I think to 01 53 blocks might have been stronger. Got me. I say do whatever you want and have fun. New blocks are always available!!!! I think the most important thing you can do to your truck is this: http://www.dieselram.com/archive/index.php?t-173842.html If you are going to tow do not drill any holes in the VB when you install the shift kit. You can also replace all the planets your 47re trans with 48re planets.
  22. My truck has the mods listed below and I never got over 30lbs of boost out of the super b. I did get much better mileage and the truck towed 1,000% better. BTW, super b single not the special. The special is even bigger than the reg super b.Yes you will need the inline 4" pacbrake.I have no idea how much hp you would have. 400 ish I'd guess. If you want hp get an edge comp and tap the pump. If you want to tow heavy get some 100's and the super b. You will get better tow mileage and tow much faster! I'd be looking at upgrading my VB with all this.I have the 100 raptor. Plenty of fuel.
  23. My advice would be to steer clear of anything that said ATS on it. You are loosing power if your turbo is pushing 35lbs of boost. It's just pushing hot air at that point. 23lbs ish is the limit of usefulness with the stock turbo. Keep in mind boost is only on parameter. Density of air is another. If you want to get a bigger turbo then you should look into some bigger injectors as well. Maybe some 100 or 150's and a super b. You won't believe you ever towed without it. Another option is to get an HE351 of an 05 or 06. Those can be found for around $300. You will need the down pipe no matter what turbo you get. The beauty of the he351 is that it spools fast and works great on automatics. It's sort of like a sooped up hy35.
  24. People run the hy35 in automatics with the gate held shut. It works out pretty well for those trucks. The automatic needs help staying spoolled between shifts sobthe smaller turbo actually increase deivability. I'm not sure how that thought applies to the ats turbo.
