  1. The springs are not under load when you jack the wheel of the ground. I have had extra springs (not add a leafs) added to my 01. It looked pretty easy. They measured the height of the truck on both sides and also leveled the truck out with spacers in the end. All new u bolts and nuts.I put airbags in my newer trucks. Right now Airlift is offering a $100 rebate if you get the bags and an onboard compressor. SD truck springs gives you $35 off if you type save35 in the rebate box. After the rebate, I'm paying $372 for airlift 5000 airbags and a single output on board compressor with an incab guage.
  2. The list would need to be organized by generation of truck.
  3. This means you probably don't have 200k miles on your truck then. Sorry.
  4. Looks like you'll need a new vp44 and a new lift pump.
  5. Gould Gear and Electric would be my first call. http://www.fixinrams.com
  6. The brake controller is not going to produce any signal from pressing the brakes when the truck is standing still. The lever might. I say might because each controller works differently when there isn't a trailer connected. It would help to understand how the controller works first. There are magnets in each electric drum and when you attach the trailer the brake controller measures the amount of resistance (number of magnets) and applies the correct voltage when needed. If the trailer is not connected the brake controller is not going to have any resistance and therefore may not produce a signal. If you are using electric over hydraulic it works differently. I doubt that is what you are using though. When you are moving and press the brakes the brake controller sense the amount of force applied and sends a signal to produce a signal in step with the amount of force it sensed. This is why you get nothing from pressing the brake when you're not moving. It would be best if you could hook up a trailer and test it.
  7. Mine is a dana 70u with the Dana PowerLock and 32 spine axles. The spiders gear were like a $350 set. Then there is the rebuild kit for the bearings, races, shims, etc for another couple hundred. Axles are really expensive as they are not made anymore. These are not the easiest things to rebuild either. A good low mileage junker might be the ticket. You could even upgrade to a Dana 80 that way and get rear disc brakes.
  8. I had to get new axles. I also replaced the spider gears, bearings, and races. In hindsight it would have been cheaper and easier to buy a complete rear end.
  9. I'm not judging. I'm just asking. I think it's funny as can be be that you are spending more time on doing this than you're going to save. I have lots of projects like that too.
  10. The axle splines wear out after awhile as well. When this happens the axles skips a bit when you turn. This make a loud popping sound. I went through this a few times.
  11. The tank is only held in by two bolts. Why does it need to be easier to get to?
  12. Other than the converter, I followed the vb directions to the letter. The truck shifts nice and smoothly and you can tell the difference in line pressure. I have it on two trucks (05 and 06) and I really like it. It was also a lot cheaper than a VB built by someone else with the same parts that costed more because their name was on it.
  13. http://www.forkliftaction.com/upload/news/283-1.jpg Big ___ forklifts!
  14. 2008 6 cylinder. I'm not sure about the mileage. It isn't great. The tdi is the way to go.
  15. I kept the stock converter. I am not a big believer in bigger converters. Every truck of mine with a triple disc converters breaks hard parts every 100k. Trannies with stock converters last three times longer for me.
  16. I drive my truck around most of the time... www.facebook.com/flynnmarinetransport
  17. I have gone through lots of Timbo apps. They all lasted at least 100k miles.
  18. Well, if one of those dealerships calls looking for an '05 again have them call me. They can have mine.
  19. My wife went from the Jetta to the Taureg. She love it.
  20. Amnesia is totally necessary for the second kid.
  21. The OP asked if he should get a 6.7. As an actual owner of a 6.7 and an owner of a 5.9, I can tell you I prefer the 6.7. The #1 reason I prefer it is that the exhaust brake works great with the automatic transmission. #2 The automatic transmission has an extra gear over the 48re. #3. The 6.7 gets better mileage than my 05 or 06 when towing. The 2007.5 had soot problems that caused issues with the turbo and dpf. These issues were fixed a long time ago. As a comparison, a second gen has vp44 problems that have never been solved, the 47re is junk and some people love these trucks. The 06 and 07 5.9 are prone to catastrophic failures. Wrist pins, melted pistons, whatever. These motors melt down without warning in unmodified trucks and there are some people who think these are the greatest trucks ever made. The truth is each year truck has some challenges. Some of these challenges we deal with. Some we call Mike for and others we post about. These challenges are probably the main reason each of us found this site. As I see it, the OP want's to know if a newer truck will be easier to live with than his older one. Will it get better mileage, will it make him jump higher, or will it make him more attractive to women. The answers are pretty clear. The 6.7 gets better mileage when everything is deleted. It is unlikely he will delete a brand new truck so the mileage will suffer. The new truck will have a newer suspension and tires so he may jump higher and it is a known fact that women love new diesel trucks so they will definitely find him more attractive.
  22. That's exactly what I sent you.
  23. My 6.7 is a 2007.5. Runs fine with 184k miles. My 2001 was a 53 block. That was supposed to be junk too. 1.2 million miles later I'm still waiting for it to crack. I don't buy too much into what other people say because I doubt most of them have any idea what they are talking about. I waited on the 6.7 because I wanted to see if they would last as long as the 5.9. There are lots of high mileage 6.7's now so I felt safe getting one.
  24. http://www.dieselram.com/showthread.php?t=198298 Read this for VB info. Tim Holt is the man and I have used this recipe in al my trucks.
  25. The 03 was supposed to get better mileage than the 05 so not sure how to compare the 03 and 6.7. Towing the same boat I get 10 percent better mileage with the 6.7.
