6 Driving Tactics to Save Gas This Summer
Mythbusters did an episode on it, and if I recall it did incresae fuel economy but also increase distance so it was a wash. The theory is sound, but I think it depends on the circumstances. I read once that UPS paid Garmin to crease GPS software with mainly right turns and the ability to input all the stops on the truck, I heard that worked... but don't have any proof.

Check out this thread on Jeep Forum...
That's awesome!

Aluminum Rim Failure
Holy load rating batman!!! I am not sure I have ever seen LRG tires in a 16" rim before, will the rims match the tire rating? Who makes the rims/tires?

Ha!!! I get about 16-18 around town and on the fwy. 10-14 towing my TT.

fuel life
It wouldn't hurt to add a stabilizer to it. My dad's commercial fishing boat would get filled up every August and not started until April, every year for the 15+ years he owned that boat.. never a fuel related issue. He did use Amsoil Diesel Concentrate as well, which is a fuel stabilizer. I also use it every tank and these days can go 2+ months without a fill.

Loss of power, tons of black smoke, two codes p0243, p1223.
Yes it is possible to buy just a solenoid, as it sounds like the solenoid has failed, but they are not cheap. Do you have any mods on the truck, or is it bone stock? There may be a better way to go about it..The part number is a Holset 4036054, thou I can't find any online.

The only thing I have really seen any mpg increase from is the Smarty Jr.. Thou the turbo seems to have made a difference too, but still to early to tell.

Without a boost gauge I doubt you will notice the difference. It takes a lot of power to feel a difference, and your just not going to get it with a intake mod, but you will get lower EGT's for the same fuel/rpm. The stock intake on these trucks is good for 450+ rwhp, all your doing with a mod like the MIT is making it more efficient.. but it's not a seat of the pants mod, but with gauges you can see the before/after difference. The throttle response is mostly noted by a quicker spooling turbo and seen in the boost gauge. Your fueling doesn't change so the motor can only fuel so hard. Hopefully I didn't steer you wrong in your mods, I think the benefits are worth the cost.. and certainly more than any other pre-turbo intake mod (well same as the home depot CAI, but again with the HD CAI you won't feel anything)

What aren't you impressed with?I had noticeably less low boost smoke, quicker throttle response, more boost at lower rpms (rpms required for 30 psi dropped by about 150) and cooler intake air temps.

Whats the best aftermarket cac intercooler
Hellman and Banks have good names in IC's.

48RE Trans Filter
I don't know what the media is made of, but they are an actual filter not just a simple screen. http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/catalog/partsearch.do?reqCmd=PartInformation&partNumber=TF15039&PartType=Transmission%20Filter&partflag=0¤tPage=1

Building a LOT of HEAT!!
On my truck I run about 5° hotter for a given load than on stock timing. The size of the cooling system is part of the reason these motors are hard on thermostats, they rarely go full open so the shafts develop wear spots and the springs fatigue. I replaced my thermostat 16K miles ago, of which a good amount has been towing, and the thermostat has only gone full open 4-5 times at best (honestly I can only think of 2)...

Building a LOT of HEAT!!
The fan clutch is the likely culprit, as Mike said. I would also do the coolant/thermostat to be safe. These trucks are very hard on thermostats due to the size of the cooling system. The 2nd gen thermostats open at 181° and go full open at 203° so some movement when towing is normal, but with a 203° full open you shouldn't go much over 205-210°.One other thing to note is that if the XZT adds timing you will run a higher coolant temp for the same load.

Mpg
My front axle weights about the same and if I ran 51 psi it would be squishy and corner like crap. My .01 has always been to run as much psi as you can, until you either hit a sidewall limit, tread contact patch limit, or a back limit... With a proper rim/tire combo the limit should be a sidewall limit. I can run 70/65 and have flat contact patches on my tires and a decent ride (as decent as the stock tires get). The more air you have the better mileage you will get from lower rolling resistance, and as long as the tread contact patch is flat/even you will get better tire life from cooler tread. Unless I am very heavy I keep my max psi to about 70-75.

My First 3rd Gen
The silencer ring is in the turbo on all OEM turbos, unless removed by a previous owner. The baffles in the intake tube are in addition to the silencer ring. The 03-04 vs 04.5-07 tube are a little different but serve the same purpose and the silencer ring does the same thing, thou possibly different sized based on different sized turbos. This is a HE341 (03-04) but it shows the ring installed, and you can see the snap ring. If I still had my stock tur bo/ring I would post a pic of it. Installed Removed And this is the baffle in the middle. Removing the ring does nothing for performance, only sound.. Where replacing the center section with a MIT or something similar effects sound and performance. Yes removing the X baffle is a PITA, normally breaks, and really does nothing for the disturbed airflow. The MIT is a much better way to go. And yes the silencer ring is still installed with the MIT installed, so if you want you can remove it too.

Need advise, small generator
Great to hear!If the 1000 is like the 2000 the have a vacuum driven fuel pump, and when the bowl in the carb goes dry it takes 10-12 pulls on my 2000 to fill it and then the gen fires on the first pull every time.

Fuel Filter
On your 01 I would look at 3rd gen filters, the Baldwin PF7977 is the best followed by the FS19856 from Fleetguard.

Some more mods on their way....
Sounds normal then.

My First 3rd Gen
The commonly removed silencer ring is the one that is attached to the turbo with a snap ring. The vanes on the turbo side of the intake tube are a good thing, and the X vanes in the center section are for noise and don't do much to the flow... the ridged siding is what messes with flow and needs a new piece like the MIT I listed to fix that.

Gov. press. solenoid changed
I have also heard good things about the BorgWarner 50185 solenoid, supposed to be better and cheaper than OEM or GM.

My First 3rd Gen
Congrats! I couldn't tell you much about the auto, but most recommend a converter and a valve body. Here is my .02 on intake setups.... In the sub 450 rwhp range there isn't anything better than the stock setup, and with a few mods it can be a real performer. Air Filter: Run the OEM 4” Pleat filter, PN 53034249AA Airaid MIT: Better throttle response, quicker turbo spool, better sound GDP Intake Horn: Better throttle response, quicker turbo spool, lower intake air temps. Home Depot CAI: Cooler intake air, better flow at high boost If you have an 04.5-07 be sure to leave the directional vanes in the lower 90* intake elbow, they don’t effect flow and Holset claims they help the turbo operate up to 30% more efficient. All of these mods cost less than a standard CAI, and will out perform them. My IAT s are 6-12* over ambient under normal cruise with those mods, where stock they were 10-20*.

Some more mods on their way....
Just got back from a weekend of camping. The clutch is very smooth, as smooth as stock. The pedal feel was a little higher than stock but I got used to it really fast (thou it makes my DD's clutch fell lighter than the fuel pedal!). The first 100 miles were as good as stock, or better. I had a little bit of difficulty getting it into gear once the trans warmed when stopped. I am guessing that will rectify itself as it breaks in. There is defiantly more noise to the trans with this clutch, I can hear it in the shifter when I am lugging the motor, especially in low rpms in 5th and 6th gear at about 1000-1400 rpms when towing. It must be the heavier springs in the clutch disk. Otherwise I agree this is what should have come stock... Thou I say that about my studs, turbo, cam, etc... .
-
What type of clutch?
The clutch is in, Southbend Con-OFE. The initial impression is that it's as smooth as stock with a slightly higher pedal pressure, which is to be expected as the plate has about 500 lbs more holding strength. Doing some more driving and towing today, more results to follow.

Fuel prices thread...
Well I didn't buy diesel after the last camping trip on the gable it would drop.. tomorrow is the day I buy it but looking at the online fuel price sites the price has dropped about .04.. we shall see in the am.
