  1. Very interesting! Glad I asked. Thanks again for everything guys as always. By the way Mike, I've been wondering and of course I understand if you don't want to answer this, but what do you do for a living and what kind of background do you have that allows you to do so much testing and know all this stuff?? One other question, whats the best way to tap the pump wire? obviously there are the T style connectors and such, but I've heard guys say there are better options and Ive seen one that screws together as well. Whats the best way to go? and also the most weatherproof?
  2. Ok so I just got off the phone with edge. The dude I talked to seemed very knowledgable and experienced and he told me that you get a little more timing on three, but no more than about 60hp or lvl 2 power wise. He also didn't think I would get a full 75hp out of my injectors. He estimated about 180hp total out of my setup between comp and injectors. We also talked quite a bit about it being safe if I drive sensibly. He said he was confident I won't have problems after I told him how I plan to use it. Plus I can always turn it down to 3. Heres another question about the ground location. This may sound stupid but I'm not good with vehicle electronics yet so here goes. Why not just hook it up to the negative battery terminal that's right there?
  3. I assume you mean an intake manifold or plenum plate bolt? So new dilemma. I'm not sure I got accurate info on the comps capabilities without a wire tap. I was reading some old threads last night that had some very conflicting info on the subject. The sales guys at edge told me levels 1-3 or 40-80 hp will work without it. And I will have a lot more adjustability over the EZ. On some old forum posts I saw some saying it will be limited to 40hp and others saying it's just like and edge EZ. I plan to call the engineers at edge today at lunch but I wanted to see if any of you have concrete info.
  4. No I mean the ground wire for the comp box....I was looking at instructions online and it says it has a ground wire and to add it to the intake horn bolt with the grid heater ground....
  5. One other question, did you also connect the ground where they recomend? On the intake horn bolt?
  6. lol nice. Well I just got off the phone with edge again. The guy there pretty much convinced me to stay with the comp. Just maybe not tap the pump. According to him, without the tap levels one through three will work as they should. The 80hp level three puts me right below my clutch rating so that works out well, and I still get all the adjustability. He also said they do all their testing on mostly stock trucks and don't normally break stuff lol. My biggest concern at this point is input shaft. He also said to just use common sense when driving so hopefully all works out and I get the best of both worlds. Also just curious, where did you pull power from for the comp box? The fuse tap like the instructions recomend or what?
  7. So what I'm hearing is I shouldn't be after the low end fueling that the smarty had so much because that is what is harder on things... also just checking because I'm not supper good with metric tire sizes, you actually went to a bigger diameter but almost 1-1/4 inches narrower tire? That decrease in surface area is what saves you? I believe my truck has now had fifth gear nut issues twice. This time it should be fixed for good though since it has not only the updated but from dodge, but the retainer from active trans. Fingers crossed and trying to drive it very carefully anyway. one more question and I know it's a personal preference/opinion thing but I respect your opinions so here goes, would either of you be afraid to run the comp on 5x5 on my truck with the mods I have and knowing that on paper the numbers are too high for the clutch?
  8. That's kinda the way I'm leaning now. Just hate to not have that adjustability. May have to call edge back and see how adjustable the low end fueling is without tapping the pump. Then decide which to go with. My dilemma is, with the EZ I tried I missed a little on the low end coming from the smarty. I figured the comp would probably allow me to make up for that. But then I realized the huge power gains with the comp...mike, do you have any significant drivetrain upgrades other than clutch? What is a reasonable torque number to expect from my 75hp injectors?
  9. That's the thing, adding up the numbers takes me over the rating on the clutch. That's why I was asking for opinions on that and how hard the comp will be on my truck in general. I'm kinda leaning toward just sticking with the EZ now because I don't wanna overtax the drive train. I don't need all that power. The adjustability would be nice but I don't really need it...
  10. Well yes I know that. I'm just trying to get a ball park estimate that makes me feel safe running the comp because on paper my truck could potentially make so much.
  11. Also is there any way to get a more accurate estimate of tq and hp than just adding up what things are rated for?
  12. Ok. I would imagine numbers would be slightly higher under a large load though right? Looks like you hit about 320 hp and 700tq? Sounds like we are about the same on clutch then... im just leary of adding soooo much power haha. I don't wanna not have it and later wish I had, but I am scared of breaking things or reducing reliability or longevity.
  13. What is your clutch rated for? I'm not familiar with the feramic aspect although I though they were rated higher. I believe your is organic/feramic? Mine is only organic so that's why Im concerned. What about stress on the drivetrain in general? Do you think the comp is much harder on everything being that it adds that much hp and tq? Do you have the bigger or stock input shaft? My tires are only slightly bigger than stock at 285/75 where I believe stock is 265/76 or 245/75 depending on which wheels your truck came with. Also, what do you think my total numbers would be with injectors and comp?
  14. Well after trying a 2003 Edge EZ from a friend I decided to order the Edge Comp. The EZ was not quite as nice as the smarty on the low end. Anyway, this morning I was thinking and I realized that between the Comp and my injectors I would potentially be exceeding my clutch rating....should I be worried about this? I mean I don't have to tap the pump, but I figured I might as well, especially if thats how I can get the best fuel economy. Anyway my clutch is a new Valair single disc organic rated at 400hp and 900ft lbs. I have 75hp injectors and the Comp I believe is rated at up to 120hp and 350ft lbs. I have no idea how to calculate hp and torque and how accurate it would be, but just adding up those numbers on paper and estimating about 150ft lbs for the injectors puts me over the clutch...what do you all think? should I just stick with the EZ? or will my actual numbers be lower than that? I don't think I want to just say ill drive it nicely because I'm pretty sure thats gona happen 100% of the time lol although I should add that my definition of being hard on a vehicle is way less hard on in that what most people think. I baby my stuff haha. I don't do burn outs or boosted launches. Just accelerate a little hard once things are at least halfway warmed up. And at that point I also rev it out a little farther as it 2500 at most. I should also add that my truck is about to hit 260,000 and I don't want to be too hard on it. I'm counting on it to last till at least 400,000 maybe 5....so just give me some opinions. Is an edge comp going to put undue strain on things? Particular my new clutch. Should I just stick with the EZ?
  15. Oh ok that makes sense. Well thanks again guys. It's amazing much you all know about our trucks!
  16. Interesting. So what's different about them then? Just color? Why do you need a pigtail if they are interchangeable? Sorry for all the questions, I just like to learn as much as I can about these trucks. Never know when the info will come in handy!
  17. Are those two both oval shaped then? Just one gray and one black?
  18. Ok thanks again very much for the info. You have been very helpful as always. It wouldn't even be worth all that just to make this comp work. Plus I wouldn't want to risk messing my truck up. I was mainly concerned that my truck might have the wrong sensor.
  19. Thanks for the reply! Do you think there is any chance my truck has the wrong one right now?
  20. Well I have another question for you all. So I found an edge comp for sale on another forum and the owner and I are trying to determine if it will or will not work for my truck. Our build dates are almost the same (6/00 and 7/00) but he has the oval map plug and I have the round. He said I could switch out the sensors and splice a new end onto my engine wiring harness because they are the same voltage. However from reading around on other forums it sounds like edge has said that is incorrect, and that the sensors have different output voltages. While thinking about all this I remembered that my map sensor is connected to my engine wiring harness with flat blade connects. That made me wonder if my truck even has the correct map sensor or if someone else switched the sensors in the past. It's also possible the sensor harness just got damaged and had to be replaced of course. What do you all think? Would a newer map even fit in my truck? And if so would it run? Or run well? Edge also apparently says that at least their ez boxes are programmed differently for the different map sensors (not sure about their others) and that guys have used the wrong box and had it work but just not as well. So I'm trying to figure this out and make sure my truck even has the correct sensor... I also got an old style used EZ from a friend to test out. And it has the round plug so it will work with the way my truck currently is. But like I said since the connector is spliced, I want to make sure it has the correct sensor.
  21. Ok thanks I didn't think I could get that much. I had one guy willing to go $325 but I didn't want to go that low. Not yet anyway. I really need to find someone who wants to trade lol. I think the comp and smarty and pretty equal as far as value.
  22. Very interesting info! Thank you for explaining all that. What do you guys think would be a fair asking price for my smarty S03?
