  1. I use a Cat sealer that is no longer sold, luckily I have a good sized tub of it, it's really sticky and comes with a brush in the lid of the cap, you can just paint a smear on no problem This is smeared on and pretty much left to go really tacky then the parts bolted together but not torqued just nipped, torque after it's dried, works every time and seals some right poor surfaces I just recently did a 810cc twin engine in a 1963 Howard rotovator, made a base gasket for the barrels but no headgasket, intake or exhaust gaskets, reused and this stuff sealed everything no problem H/G was copper though Gaskets tend to squish out using sealer if torqued straight away but the Cat stuff I have seems to grab the gaskets better and faster and unusually it only really sticks to the gasket if stripped again and not the part
  2. I know what you're saying, makes sense really, I need to get the rest of the motor out of the frame and onto a engine stand.... read make a engine stand
  3. Put the Howard rotovator up for sale a few days ago, new owner collected it today He has a plot on an allotment, here local councils have areas of land and they subdivide into plots so people can grow their own food where maybe they have not got a big enough area at home, pretty sure allotments were a by product of WW2 as here every last bit of ground had to be used to feed the nation Anyway the guy has a plot on a big area so as well as sorting his bit out he says he'll be charging to do other plots He was over the moon with it, I'm now looking for another to rescue
  4. Pulled a bit more off of this pile and it will need +20 pistons, rings and a bore, it does have S&S rods though Tried the hone in one cylinder and a bit of a water mark that would take ages to get rid of so it's going 20 over, it's standard 3 3/16th so 3.188 so will be 3.208 Now got to decide whether I split the cases and check the rest
  5. Nice work On your 2nd picture tell me the KDP did get a keeper washer fitted or the case has the slightly smaller bore at the front so it can't come out ? just above the large gear with the red paint mark on it When I did mine the dowl pin was really tight and hadn't moved at all, washer made to cover it anyway, glad I checked though as maybe 3 of the timing case bolts were loose (inside ones) they got removed one at a time loctited and retorqued as did the washer retaining bolt
  6. Cometic used to make one In fact they were the first to hold 1200hp Just checked and I don't see head gaskets, I know for a fact they used to
  7. Economy tune is just what I need @£1.80 and more for a litre of diesel thats $8.41 for a US gallon Good thing is my business is VAT registered which means I get any vat charged to me back, it's 20% currently so while I pay vat to the gov at 20% on any profit or sales I get it back on any purchases so diesel costs me $6.72 per US gallon in the long run, this is done every 3 months a month in arrears. Anyway thread hijack back to the topic.... You won't regret buying a quad, yes it won't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear (go a long way though) it will make a big difference to a truck if the trucks has parts that will work together
  8. Start of this year I lost 20lb to try and easy my hip problems got down to 16 stone 7 which is 224lbs ish and I cannot get under that no matter what I need another 20 to 30 lbs gone really but beer and proper fish and chips seem to always win
  9. I got referred to a Physio a few years ago for back and hip pain, pain was that bad I couldn't sleep and it had been going on for months. The woman was a thin as a stick and the giveaway was she was dressed in a track suit and looked like she did a marathon everyday before work, maybe around 40 to 45. She handed me a wedge of papers and said "you need to exercise" that was it "bye now " at the time I could barely walk and this fool wanted me to run everyday I didn't bother seeing her again, she was right but no slow slow just marathon everyday
  10. Thing is my truck is auto and nothing has been done to the trans AFAIK might have had a stock rebuild but thats it but cannot be sure, stock 175k injectors, stock turbo As has been said just tune around what you have, a quad really is night and day, I have no gauges other than a mechanical FP gauge which to be fair with a mechanical LPump it's pretty redundant anyway, Quad temp gauge is in the trans and I can see enough on the tablet screen so I don't need pillar gauges I have a stock towing tune, daily tune and a tune I mess with when I have time which is never, the towing tune is the one that I use all the time towing or not, I don't drive like a clown I'm too old for that rubbish BUT my truck needs to move as and when without exploding the trans the quad does it easy, I used to run on LVL 9 of my tow tune and MPG wasn't great but I'd say trans wise LVL 9 of my tow tune is about where I would want to be as a max, this BTW was when we had diesel at £1.20 ish a ltr. Now diesel is over £1.80 a ltr and rising and does not look to be coming down anytime soon (Thanks PUKIN) so I run on LVL 2 mostly and other than bucking a bit it is ok, MPG is better, I do need to sort the bucking out but as I said I drive very conservative and just either back off a bit or if the truck is pulling hard I drop a gear, I don't just stick my truck in D and go I listen to what is happening and pick the right gear, most may think that's not doable with an auto but it is. I will say I hate my truck without the quad and if I hadn't bought a quad I'd have sold the truck by now My truck needs injectors, I think I'll go 7x10's as I can't see the point of doing things more than once, these will be too much for my trans but NOT with the quad, I'll just tune the fuel out of it. OR @Mopar1973Man do a tune for bone stock engine and trans with 7x10 injectors A quad to my door in the UK was a lot of ££ but worth every penny and more
  11. yes the case really doesn't want to come off with the chain tensioned, bit of looking and figuring sorted it out
  12. Got into it today as well as collecting a Fender Telecaster for my brother in laws 70 birthday present (He lives in Denmark, road trip in 2 weeks) Jeez this thing is a dog, 93 sportster frame and some clown has attempted to fit a 82 ironhead with off the shelf stuff so front motor mounts are forward control plates, rears don't fit so hey ho lets grind the case on the left rear and also the swing arm pivot, some people should never ever be allowed anywhere near anything mechanical Starter was missing what I now know to be the solenoid, this was at first a right ##ss off BUT I removed the left primary casing and pulled the starter, turning it over on the crank nut there seemed to be a tight bit, originally I thought it was compression but I figured it wasn't in line with both cylinders just one so rocker boxes off, heads off, noticed a very small shiney bit on the top of one piston, either cam timing is wrong or valve clearance on that valve is way tight. Good job the starter was done or I might have connected it to a battery put some oil in it and tried to start it Pulled the jugs off and it's going to be a rebore and new pistons, crank and rods at the moment appear to be ok Pulled the right side case..... jeez there is some stuff in there Made the call, all I'm keeping is the motor and rear spoked wheel hub, possibly the gas tank as it is not the tiny peanut tank which I dont like, it's more S shaped but again some clown has been at it underneath Here's a laugh, took me most of today to figure out where the generator is and guess what the wiring output is bare wires, enough to cut the connector off and use duetz connector Again all my pictures are upside down ?????? Look closely at the rear piston, very small shiney bit
  13. One thing I can add ABS codes might not be read by some code readers, high end stuff like a Snap On Modis or similar will read which I have but I also have a SO brick and that won't Also you should be able to see stored codes again with high end stuff
  14. Well I brought the collection forward and got it today... the seller was not lying it is a dog My 150amp alternator breaker quit 10 miles from the destination, well thats when I spotted no charging going on, arrived and got the bike loaded then it took me 2 hours to finally decide the breaker was at fault (no tools just a multimeter) kept resetting it and it pops out after 2 minutes, it was getting hot but the charge cable closer to the alternator was cold so decided to bolt both sides of the breaker together onto the output stud, all good and charging fine Back to the harley, something missing off of the alternator/starter, everything is garbage worst thing is I know sweet F A about these things but I'll figure it out anyone got a alternator/starter for a 82 ironhead or a workshop manual or links to info Need to get it running to figure out the next move
  15. Hope it goes well. Locksmith would be an interesting job I would think especially if taught the skills of the old boys I've jumped twice in 44 years, once in 2004, quarry, mobile plant mechanic, took voluntary redundancy and walked with nearly £20k, set up importing American cars, trucks, parts, and repairs mostly Mopar this failed in 2008 due to the recession, went to work for Cat and then the UK cat dealer (Finning) not the best time time in my working life is all I'll say but I did learn the Cat way of diagnostics which was priceless. I then left Finning and went back to a quarry as maintenance supervisor (mobile plant) but after 3 years I left and started working for myself (2020) again but mobile plant, after nearly 2 years I'm just where I want and need to be. I worked both Saturday and Sunday last weekend but this week I'm doing nothing but putting a Ford 390 back together at home in my workshop, researching ironheads as I just bought one and looking for a Telecaster guitar to buy for my brother in law who we are going to visit in Denmark in June (guitar is for his 70th) Change is good.... good luck
  16. I can't wait to go get it, way too busy this week After doing some reading I suppose I could have picked an easier motor to rebuild...., ah well and even more reading casts doubt on it being 1200 but well see I really want something much earlier and a lotto win would be a wla or even earlier so this might have to be a stepping stone
  17. Just bought myself a Harley none runner basket case, imported recently so not yet registered here, 93 sportster frame etc fitted with a ironhead 1200, got to collect it next week. Didn't want anything original as I want to build a fat tyre springer hardtail, not bothered about it being a none runner, it turns over and has compression, I can fix most things anyway. It is rough but I only need the engine and part of the frame
  18. @Stubilly yes agree mastercylinder is easier as bolt on new but booster isn't anything to be bothered about, the key is lay it all out as it comes apart, there are seals that fit over the spool and they were pretty tight to get back on without them being turned if that makes sense
  19. No a great deal in the booster and easy to rebuild, there are 2 kits, one is just seals, the other is the full deal with everything, I put up with mine leaking for months before looking for kits, biggest problem I found was most kits are made in china, Pirate Jack (I think) has both kits made in the USA I ordered both as being in the UK and my truck is a work vehicle I like to cover all bases. I did use the full kit in the end, everything was good quality but I found the kit covered more than just my booster so there were parts over, I'd methodically laid it all out as I stripped it so was easy enough to ID what I needed and what I didn't. The kit does not address any problems with the accumulator (blue canister) the FSM has a test for this of so many brake applications with engine off before pedal goes hard IIRC, mine passed anyway
  20. Picture is my Ram and mobile workshop trailer on site yesterday servicing and repairs on a loading shovel, 7 hours yesterday plus travel (about 35 miles total) Volvo L110E Same today but didn't get a pic, Cat 950H at a different site maybe 80 miles round trip, 7 hours plus travel, travel was actually more home as M1 Motorway shut due to accident so the scenic route home. Pulls all my tools, generator, 45 gallon of oils and coolant then the waste oils and filters back home, sometimes I have my big generator, gas cuttting equipment and mig welder in the bed too. Not many people here in the UK use them for work
  21. Ouch, my brother has bad knees, sometimes he can barley walk, he's 55 but might be 250lb, my knees are good but hips and back hurt all the time I can't take Naproxen so have to take Codiene but I can't take that when working on site as it's a drugs and alchohol fail.
  22. Yes Putin is ex KGB and yes he wants the Soviet Union back, there was a documentary on our TV just recently about him..... slimey horrible little man Some news reports here also say he is ill but one day it's cancer next it's something else so not sure what to believe or think He has ordered at least 4 people poisoned here in the UK on our soil all within the last 10 years, a father and daughter were poisoned in Salisbury, and a Guy called Litvenyenko or something like that, his widow was on our tv last night
  23. Just been watching the news... inflation expected to be 10% here this year and of course the stupid Bank of England just raised interest rates today to counteract inflation you'd think these people that are paid a huge amount of money for doing diddly would realise people spending money is not driving inflation at the moment but hey lets make inflation worse by increasing interest rates. I'm glad I own no one nothing
  24. Mostly linked to Ukraine, crude oil is high but prices have come down a little but hey no reduction at the pumps, out Gov recently cut vat on fuel by 5%, made not one difference at the pumps, greedy retailers pocketing money, BP has just announced £5billion profit first 1/4 of 2022 We haven't got huge amounts of forest area... and most of our heating pellets are imported from either Russia (no more) or the USA, this is a good source of heat as long as the forests are managed and pellets are made from waste, this country needs to shape up and plant more trees. What surprises me is the amount of wooden pallets here that end up in landfill, I was only yesterday looking at a pellet mill that would make pellets out of pallets, me thinks there wouldn't be enough sap left to bind the wood fibres together but I could be wrong. I made a mistake when I got this Herz pellet boiler as I removed a pellet/grass seed/grain/animal feed log boiler, this had an auger that transported anything that would move down the auger into the furnace but you could also fill it with wood/logs/waste/cardboard and it would tick away, should have piped both in. There is a lot of people here relying on food banks to eat right now, Putin needs gone
