Turbo cool down period
i think one thing that is missed in this discussion is the cumulative effects of high turbo temp shutdown causing the coking. The time it takes for the oil to actually BBQ in the turbo probably is around the time that the turbo actually starts getting below the coking temp. But that small overlapping timeframe over and over again from heavy towing/no cooldown could be causing the cumulative buildup of coked oil in the bearing race. For us daily drivers, we shut down with minimal cooldown but yet there are no problems. Those that have had turbo bearing failure probably got the turbo real hot, and shutdown with non-sufficient cooldown times thus causing the buildup over time leading to failure.thoughts?

national cell phone ban
well how bout instead of banning cellphone use while driving, just revoke driving prevelages of those who kill someone from being distracted because of the cellphone.i know everyone can compare this and that as far as distractions go but lets be honest, who has seen more accidents or dumb sh!t being done by drivers being distracted by other stuff compared to cell phones?in the past 6 months i have yet to see a person do something stupid in front of me that was NOT on a cell phone. All of them doing stupid stuff was on a phone. this is the point.

LiveOak, what would you do to fix the problem? Allowing people to continue to do as they will hoping they will be held accountable sure seems like turning a blind eye to the issue. I am sure you wont enjoy insurance rates going up because of accidents caused by distractions by yet another source...How many sources of distractions and deaths does it take till something is done?

either your u joints or the double cardan on the Front DS

Blower Motor
bushings are hosed. i had gone through 3 resistor packs before i realized the fan motor was seizing from dust and crap ramping up the amps thus blowing the resistor pack. when u change the blower fan, its about $50 and you will need to transfer the squirrel cage if it isnt broken to the new motor and wire it in. replace the resistor pack if it shows any cracks as it is on its way out. takes about an hour total

Turbo cool down period
this is one reason why i am headed to a water cooled turbo. it is the latent heat in the turbo housing and any heat that creeps from the head to the headers and then into the turbo that does the cooking. but then again i can usually shutdown at most places under 300* by the time i pull in.

slowing down
So i have been performing an experiment on myself to see if there is a positive change. From where i live the speeds are 75 at the highest and 55 at the lowest maximum limit.I have been cruising at 55 the whole way both directions and have found the following.1. My mileage obviously will be around the best for my truck.2. Going slower than everyone else allows me to relatively stay in the right lane and i dont have to switch lanes much anymore. another source of aggrivation.3. Faster people will pass and fly by, so be it.4. Going slower means i dont have slow people in front of me to slow me down that would normally be a source of aggrivation.5. I dont have to pass people much anymore. another source of aggrivation.6. i get to my destination maybe 5 minutes later than i usually would (if that), but i still leave early enough to have no reason to rush.7. Any idiot on the road will have passed me thus not have spewed his driving ignorance on me if i were doing the speed limit. Results:I dont have much road rage or aggrivation while driving anymore.I get to work feeling better and not so pissed at everything, my day starts on a good foot. This only took a week to realize and i am enjoying the results. You should give it a try. Take one week, use good judgement and slow down a bit, let everyone pass ya. Turn the radio up and enjoy the ride! You will see much of the aggrivation from driving dissapear

valid points, and good conversation. I like seeing everyones views as they have opened many doors to many things good and bad.It is a tough subject to manage, how to prevent so many accidents that are caused by these distractions.

national cell phone ban
I am having this discussion on another forum as well, and a good point was brought up. There are many causes of distraction that leads to accidents, and to help curb the accidents caused by cell phone use, a heavy fine should be given to ANY party involved in the accident whether at fault or not, if they were on a cell phone (which can be proven).first exampleperson #1 is on a phone and hits person #2, person #1 get cited for the accident and fined for being on the phone that distracted them causing the accident.person #2 hopefully lives.second exampleperson #1 hits person #2. person #1 was not on a phone and gets charged with the accident.Person #2 was on a phone and was hit by person #1. person #2 is FINED for being on the phone and distracted causing inability to avoid being hit (in some cases)third exampleBoth drivers are on phones, one causes the accident. Both get fined for being on phones and one get cited for the cause of the accident.the same can be done if proven a driver was clearly distracted by something else other than a cell phone.Thoughts?

you have very valid points that something else needs to be done, i heard about vehicles being equipped with RF blockers/jammers that turn on when they sense an RF signal. But they shut off when the vehicle is stopped or something like that. Inhibiting the use of cellphones by active devices while driving is a good thing. But then it can be bypassed or disabled unless they integrate it into the ecm or something like the breathalyzer thing for dui people. If you tamper with it, you cant drive the car. they would have to figure out a way to allow for 911 calls while driving though. --- Update to the previous post... damn you stumped me! The horse is like "WTF GET OFF THE PHONE AND LETS RIDE!"

here is my counter argument. As i agree with you to a point, the issue is that when using a cell phone your brain is engaged in the conversation on the phone, not the road. When people are fully ebedded in a phone call while driving, paying attention to driving becomes secondary. They actually did a scientific study about this long ago. However, eating for example, really isnt that hard. We play video games, drive, talk and all sorts of things whilst eating and still can concetrate on the task at hand. The act of eating doesnt take much concentration to perform, unless you spill sauce on your suit or dress then that is where is becomes the disrtaction. The main point is that being engaged in conversation on a cell phone takes your mind away from driving far more than anything else we do in the car. Thus why i think they should ban it. It is a known fact that the human mind cannot be fully engaged on more than one activity at a time when there needs to be concentration involved. If there were to be a compromise, they should just ticket people who start screwing up on the road while doing anything other than driving, this could cover everything and not focus on one thing.

I really hope this passses as 90% of the idiots i see on the road doing stupid crap are on the phone. http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/13/us/ntsb-cell-phone-ban/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Dead pedal on 2002 cummins when the temp is above 70 degrees
yeah with the temp thing he mentioned its hard to determine which is the culprit as heat will do weird things to electronics.

Fass pump, I screwed up!
yep thats the only thing i can think of as well, something was causing the motor to work really really hard and current shot through the roof. Hope you get it fixed soon and no harm to the IP.
