Water Pump Finally

Replaced the OEM one yesterday afternoon with a new one from AutoZone.  I tell you;  nothing lasts anymore, only 226,xxx miles/11years and this thing craps out on me!! :duh:  :thumb1:

 

 

Weep hole was plugged with dirt/**** etc.  The rubber O-ring was broken thru in one spot once I got her out.  Don't know if I tore it removing it though; as I had to take a wood dowel and place it on the water pump to break it free from the block.  I didn't wack it hard, just tapped to break the 11 year old dirt seal on the thing.  Once I saw that it moved from the block, it came out easily.

 

Cleaned up the mounting area, put a very light coat of grease on the O-ring, and re-installed.  

 

I did remove tension on the serpentine belt, and removed the OEM air filter box to gain some elbow room to get my big hands and wrenches in there!!

 

No extra parts left over, and no leaks either!!! :thumb1:

Still waiting for mine to wear out eventually. Knowing my luck I'll end up doing a rebuild or refreshing the engine because it will all fall apart at the last second. :rolleyes:

 

 

Parked the truck outside last night................next day I saw drip drops on the drive.  Upon further inspection, the water pump was wet, was leaking down the front passengers side of the engine.  Some spray on air box also.  Dripping off of the AC compressor mainly.

 

Had to be the first day it leaked, because I've had a clean piece of cardboard on the floor in my garage under my truck for months with no wet spots!!

226,000 miles isn't bad.  Obviously nothing will last forever, but having parts that go that far is good in my book.

Not too bad of a life, thou I would be VERY surprised if the Auto Zone one lasts 1/3 as long as anything but Cummins pumps get horrible reviews. 

 

How many hours on the pump?

 

7174 hours.................31.6mph average.

 

When I saw that it was leaking;  I went online to research them.  The consensus was that it's a "crap shoot" with water pumps no matter where one gets them.  This is a NEW pump, not a remanufactured one, and it looked almost identical to the OEM one.

I personally thing part of that problem is the coolant turning corrosive and eating seals and bearings premature. I've proved that time and time again up here with locals. They assume as long as the coolant isn't rusty colored its still good. But like all the systems I've drained out the last gallon typically comes out rusty. Really shocker to show a truck owner that the rust settles to the bottom and typically not seen. So like most I see locally drain off the coolant in a clean bucket, change the pump and pour the same coolant right back in. Good reason why there is such low out comes for some. Then great out come for others like myself. I'm already due for a coolant change now...

OK;  I've got a leak that looks a lot like the water pump again.........................rusty colored water that smells of coolant on the front corner passenger side of engine.  I haven't done the snooping around the front of the engine yet to confirm, but it probably is.

 

OK John, are you satisfied???!!!:smart:  Probably order an OEM one from Geno's garage.

The water pump on these trucks are the easiest I've ever changed. No gasket or sealer to deal with. Just the serp belt and 2 bolts. So I opted for a Napa pump when mine went out. Still going strong after 2 years. For the $40 cost I'd just throw another into the parts box in the truck and change it on the fly if it goes out on the road. Gee like a ratchet and one socket to change. Biggest issue is letting the truck cool enough to change it.

@joecool911 is right these are very simple water pumps with the 2 bolts and a o-ring. Just make sure to clean the hole up with a bit of sandpaper and grease the hole slightly to prevent damage to the o-ring during install.

 

Did that with the one that's leaking now!!!

 

How much coolant do I need to drain to change this thing??   I replaced the one last year after I drained the system to replace the coolant with fresh.  I shouldn't need to drain the whole system, correct???

My 12 valve with the second water pump on it, same pump as the 24 valve I believe, has almost 450 k on the truck. Can't remember when it got its second pump. A long time ago is all I know.

I think it's on it's third idler pully though.
