HO VP44 or SO?

I thought I had it all figured out, I called DAP today and they told me the opposite of what I thought I knew. Is the only way to find the correct pump that I need, to pull the old one?

look at the tag on your motor, is it a 245 ho or a 235 so?  I know some early 6 speed trucks were SO's still.  

 

 

regardless I would go with a SO pump

Yea from what I understood the SO/HO were directly related to the engine type being either SO/HO.

If I remember correctly, there seems to be no real benefit to getting the HO or hot rod pumps, but I have no experience with either.

What did DAP tell you?

DAP made it seem that the transmission determines so vs ho. since i have the nv5600 I need the ho. where is the engine that would give HP?

There is a metal plate on the gear cover area right by the vp44.

 

Most nv5600 trucks were ho but some of the early ones were SO.

Thanks again for the help.  The tag says 235 HP, so I'll go with SO.

I found this on Cummins Hub. It lists 2 hp ratings for 1999. 215, auto and 235, manual. does not call it an HO but there must be some difference. There is more hp and torque difference in 99 than 02. http://cumminshub.com/timeline.html

You just want to be sure your core is the same as the one you get. I seem any places that want except and HO for an SO and vica versa for a core.

The 1999 SO trucks came with the optional 5600, and the tranny came with the smaller 1 1/4" input shaft like the 4500.  To be sure if you have the SO or the HO, you can confirm with the VIN.  If the 8th digit is a 6 then its an SO.  If its a 7 then you have an HO.

Thanks KATOOM, the 8th digit is a 6.  So, it looks like I was able to verify a couple different places that this is a SO....now I am just waiting for the pump to come in along with the other fittings and pieces that I am going to install.  After I can get it running I'll verify the alternator and maybe this time next week I'll be waiting for parts to rebuild that.

Thinking out loud here. If you have an SO and it is 235 hp what is the 215 hp? HO does not seem right. Something does not make sense.

early trucks where 215. mine was a 215 hp truck

Dont worry you are fine no 215 pumps are out there anymore, at least new.

Look at the wiki page for the engine. The 215hp rated engines were the 98-00 trucks with autos. Manuals were always the higher hp trucks. In 01-02 the SO/HO came about where manual and auto had the same hp unless one was a SO/HO

I was not trying to muddy the water though it seems I accomplished that. With the cost of the pumps and cores, just did not want to see someone get stuck.

Just to muddy the water back up again... 

Most all high-performance pumps are typically built from a SO pump. So most folk typically migrate to the SO even from the HO pumps.

The thing that bugs me is every where I looked you have to return the same pump for a core that you buy. So if I wanted to put an SO on mine i would have to find an SO to return. Always thought that was a little strange.
