Post Mod Trans Issue

Recommended Posts

This morning my truck wouldn’t shift into 4th gear without letting off the throttle, actually got worse as the truck got warmer. Then, it almost stalled at a red light,  and I realized it hadn’t downshifted to 1st. Checked the trans oil (less than 3,000 miles) and it’s good and dark red, but smells burnt. Wanted to get a good list from the forum of things to check before I send it to a shop. This is 3 weeks post WT mod, which IMHO has been the single best mod I’ve done to the truck. No codes. I’m going to reset the TIMBO apps.

Kind of what I figured. It’s been raining here all day so I’ll check it out tomorrow. After the WT mod it has shifted better, firmer, and held stronger than ever…3 weeks of that and boom. Maybe the truck running correctly has finally exposed issues in the transmission. I’ve been wanting to have it rebuilt anyway.

He’d be my first choice if I was closer, I’m in Tennessee. At this point I still don’t even know what’s broken in the transmission and will have to take it somewhere to have it diagnosed. All that is for certain right now is:

-trans oil with under 3,000 miles is dark red, with some swirls of black residue, and smells burnt

-truck won’t shift to OD without backing of the throttle

-won’t downshift to first at stop (and maybe even staying in 3rd)

-drove it 10 miles like this and parked it

-all happened a month after WT mod

-truck is stock with a smarty

-don’t know much on the history of the trans as it was on the truck when I got it 8 years and 100,000 miles ago.

I’ll do whatever needs to be done to make it reliable, but hate to spend big money if all it needs is a sensor or solenoid.

. Don't do anything till you talk to Jon at Dynamic. Since many trans rebuilders don't know as much as Jon he ends up being the best to at least talk to. You may have an electrical issue but, I am shooting in the dark.

I hate to leverage his knowledge without buying something from him.

what I do is offer to send something for their time on the phone. Often they know eventually they will get your business. Jon is good guy.

Good idea Jag, I talked to him and told him I’d like to at least use his valve body if this thing does end up needing to be rebuilt. Between the delayed parts and shipping issues he indicated it might be best for me to use someone closer, simply Bc of logistics and timing. Jon was a real nice dude.  So I’m going to see what these local guys can do with his stuff. The other plus of using a local shop, I’ll have somebody to go back and strangle if they mess it up.

That's the crazy part I've seen big name transmission shops make a mess out of just a simple rebuild. It happens. There are members that have had stalling issues from poor or too tight of torque converter, bad valve bodies, etc.

I can only pray that you don't get taken... be prepared to make  hangmans knot. I always remember that if they mess it up it usually means excuses for higher charges to you. I cannot stand the hashers I've experienced in my life. They often pay piece rate and you get whats left.

There isn’t a 47re specialist around here so I know it won’t be an award winning transmission or anything, but this shop has 3 locations locally, I spoke directly with the owner, it’ll have a 2 year unlimited mile warranty, and a prorated warranty after that (90/10 year 3, 80/20 year 4, 70/30 year 5, etc…) We’ll see. The other “comfort factor” for me is that he owns a 99’ 2nd gen but he has a built 48re in it and uses it to pull sleds.

10 years, 100k miles seems about the lifespan of even a good rebuilt stock 47re, behind a Cummins, find out what kind of upgrades he can do to enhance the life span, upgraded valve body capable of lock up in all gears, Billet parts, extra cooling, etc..  A stock 47re is just Blah..  It will just die a slow death

Yes it’s an upgraded rebuild. I’m getting the full build sheet tomorrow, but I wrote down what I could when he was talking through it…the only thing he kept saying that I had, and still have, no idea what he was talking about was he said I could choose between a triple disc billet or a “billet billet” single disc torque converter. He said the “billet billet totally different animal than a single disc billet which comes on our standard 47re rebuild”.

triple disc or single” billet billet” TC (local builder)

Valvebody is new sonnax with some TG parts as well (local builder)

High Energy BW friction plates (clutches)

kevlar bands

updated servos

HD sprags and roller clutches

Transgo valvebody recal kit

new electronics

updated snap ring kit

new governor support

high volume oil pump

updated steel planets when needed

and any other parts that have wear.

flush and fill

$5500 out the door
