I posted this question in an older thread, but apparently no one is looking at those old treads anymore. I think that it is time for a fluid change in my transmission. I have searched all over the place for Valvoline 50 SAE gear oil, and keep coming up empty. Does anyone have a source for the proper fluid for this transmission? i am concerned that the lube shop that did the last fluid change did not use the correct fluid, and that may be contributing to my hard slightly notchy shifts. This may be a stupid question, but is the Valvoline 50 SAE motor oil the same oil? I do not think that it would have the correct additives, but I am not positive. Any help or links would be …

Need to change the tranny fluid. Looked already but couldn't find detailed instructions. I am sure many of you have done this many times. Sounds like many of you fill from the top? Drain from a PTO bolt? How many quarts? What type of fluid? Any info would be great. Thanks guys.

http://www.quad4x4.com/syntorqlt.html So since I know I got to put some sort of lubricant back into the transmission and NV4500 fluid by Castrol is no longer produced. So I called the shop that is rebuilding my transmission. He suggested 50 weight synthetic transmission fluid in a GL-4 rating. So I started digging around. I can buy a 5 gallon bucket locally for 50WT Synthetic GL-4 Transmission Fluid. Then did some digging on the Internet because I want to find out if any others where using the 50 WT transmission fluid. Guess what... Another rebuilder suggesting the 50 WT transmission fluid. http://nv4500transmission.com/nv4500-tran…

I know this has been discussed often on this forum. Pertaining to the oil that can be used and how many quarts. And forgive me if this is common knowledge. How do you actually go about the draining and refilling? It’s pretty caked up in 17 years of goo. Didn’t really know what to look for as far as drain plugs and where you pour the oil in. And if the recommended service interval is 50-60k. I’m only 260k overdo at this point. Let that math sink in lol

Lately I have noticed my 5 speed is getting harder to get into gear. I can feel the shifter moving between the gates like normal but then try to pull it into gear (mainly 2nd or reverse when stopped) it doesn't seem to want to go unless I press the clutch pedal firmly against the floorboard. It wasn't like that before, she used to slide into gear just fine. With a hydraulic clutch I'm assuming there is no adjustment? Is there a way I can check anything? Any other ideas? Thanks!

So I will need to tear apart my NV4500 and replace the syncros because it grinds when I shift into second gear. If I double clutch then I can shift with out grinding gears, but trying to down shift is difficult, so I am planning on tearing it down to replace the syncros, just wondering if I should have any other parts handy to replace since it is opened up? It seems to be fine otherwise, no whining, the gear shifter is tight and it does not seem to leak any fluids. I do not know if it has the fifth gear fix or not? Thanks for any insight.

Starting last week I have been having issues getting my truck to go into gear starting from a dead stop. I try to put it into gear and it feels like I am hitting a brick wall. After a few tries it usually goes but it takes some force. I also have noticed that the drive shaft jumps when I am putting it into gear. I have no idea what problem I am dealing with, does anybody have a clue? My only guess right now is that the clutch is not fully disengaging, possibly clutch master of slave cylinder issues? any help would be appreciated.

Yup. It finally happened to me. Dropped from 5th to 4th rolled up my power tried to shift to 5th again... NOPE so I'm stuck in 4th limped into Hoots Cafe in Whitebird, ID. Im glad my sockets with me. Quickly pulled the cup holder up. The the boots. Then the shift tower. Everything was good just jumped out of the gate. Push the center fork back to neutral. Reassembled. Took 20 minutes with basic tools. Now in Grangeville ID getting breakfast.

Hi all, My NV4500's pto covers are leaking fluid so I'm planning to pull them and reseal them. I'm looking for suggestions on what type of rtv to use and how best to clean out the case of the trans while I have them off? Also, any opinions on wether or not a filter is worth the money? They kits are $100 from quad, seems like a good idea but I'm not sure if it's a gimmick or not? Also I've heard there should be a magnet somewhere in the case and that I need to clean it off? Where is that? Should I add anymore magnets? What type? Sorry for all the questions, just want to be prepared. Thanks!

I can go thro all gears with out the clutch no problem but using the clutch seems as if it hesitates to get in there.. So I've been having difficulty finding the proper oil and I think I have the correct stuff but I want some input before I drain the old oil. So it started at NAPA I asked for the transmission oil for my NV4500 in my 1999 ram 2500. The oil I was given was part number 04874464ab. I immediately found this fishy as on the front of the bottle is says for the NV3500 and NSG-370. I got NAPA to call back the dealer that they got it from and they insisted that this is the correct oil. I did some research online and could find nothing to this being a replacement for the syntorque oil that is discontinued. After this I caĺled Castrol directly and told this what I had and what oil I …

Hi all, I'm having a slight(hopefully) issue with my 01 2500. Since I bought the truck at 248,000 it's always been a little tricky to get into first and reverse. If you put it in first before going to reverse its easy but first can be a little tricky. Anyway I just hit 254,000 and second gear is getting a little hard to get into when I stop at a light/stop sign. However it's only hard if I let the clutch out then put it back in. For example I stop at a light, take out of gear and let clutch out. Then put clutch in and try to put it in second and sometimes it's really hard till I play with it a bit. Usually I can get it but it seems like it's getting worse quickly. If I…

Gentlemen, I'm not sure how much anyone knows about this subject, so I'll throw it out there and let those who know more about it that me try and educate me. As you know, my 4500 grenaded, but my dad still has one in his 96 CTD. He's having a bit of trouble with 4th gear now and then. It feels like the detent ball in the top of the cover is getting "stuck." Like it's a little bit harder to push in, and there's no noticeable "clunk" when it drops into gear. Just slightly harder until the shifter is all the way down. Does this sound like an issue in the top cover? If it is, we'd like to swap the top cover with the one out of my 4500 and drop my old clutch in the…

Looks like my NV4500 trans hashed itself. Looked online, saw Midwestern and SP Precision. SPP has them on sale + a lower core charge. Anyone use either of these places?Any other rebuilder recommendations?
