This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

    So I been listening to my fan clutch staying locked in for weeks even when Its cool out and it sounds like a jet trying to take off. So I go get a new one this morning and same thing. I dont get it. My old truck didnt have this issue. My old truck you could hear it when it reached a hot temp it would lock in. I dont think the old clutch did this in the winter I would have noticed. I stayed on the throttle up to 3k rpm and it still locked in.

Hey guys, I was towing up hill today and somehow the wire harness that runs horizontally across the front frame cross member underneath the radiator fan came loose and got sucked into the fan. 13 wires got shredded. I replaced three blown fuses and managed to splice everything back together and got everything working (headlights, turn signals, hazards, windows, overhead display, etc.) EXCEPT my Power lock function. The unlock works on the driver side and passenger door but not unlock. i’ve been looking for about two hours now for a wiring diagram and can’t seem to find one for that harness. does anyone have any input on what I should try or…

  3. I noticed an oil leak that came from coolant overflow tank, mechanic says oil cooler ruptured and both systems are contaminated and I have "sludge" in both systems. How did my engine get torpedoed by a non maintenance part, I don't understand???!! Planning on getting my engine rebuilt and would appreciate any input on modifications for a VP 44/NV5600 truck engine rebuild.     I did my valve lash yesterday while doing an oil change. This is the second time doing the procedure. I put the engine at TDC and did my adjustments, adjusting all the valves that were loose and that I could jiggle. I put the engine at BDC and started on the next set. While doing these I looked up the procedure on here to find out what the torque setting was for the jamb nuts and I noticed that one of the valves was loose (I could jiggle it) that wasn't on the list of valves to adjust while at BDC. I finished up adjusting the valves that should of been adjusted and rotated the engine back to TDC and checked the valves and there was one that was loose that shouldn't b…

  6. The truck I'm working on has the Cumins 5.9 24 valve engine. My question is about the Diagnostic Trouble Codes. I'm scanning with the AutoEnginuity, PC based scan tool, with the enhanced Chrylser / Dodge software. I've attached the DTC Report. THIS ENGING HAS HAD THE VP44 PUMP REPLACED WITH A P7100 PUMP. I know some codes are a result of that swap. Each of the DTC "P" codes includes a description, Status, Good Trip counts, and Starts Since Failed. Each corresponds to a code that can be found in the FSM (factory service manual) as well as many other documents. The "Freeze Frame" information is confusing.     Where does the EJWA pick up the fuel temperature? I hadn't driven my truck for 2 days and went to start it up this morning. It was 32 degrees outside and the fuel temp was showing 41 degrees. After a few mins of idle and scraping the windows I started driving and the temp was showing 64 degrees. Is this read from the fuel in the VP44?

    I’m getting a recurring P1688 controller failure on my VP44. However, it’s easily cleared and the truck runs just fine. Could it just be the PSG is slow to boot up? Codes: 1688, 1693 companion Code reading/clearing method: Edge JwA Two scenarios 1. Turn the key on, 1688 is active, clear it, then start the truck without ever turning the key off. CEL never reappears as long as the truck is kept running. Idle is 800 RPM, idle load is 5% with new RV275s from DAP. The 1688 will never come back until the truck is turned off and back on.     Do you need to remove all the injector lines to remove the intake plate? I was looking at the Crazy Carls intake plate in the store and says it installs in about an hour. I know if I have to remove the injector lines it will take a lot longer than an hour.

  10. On my 99 3500, I have a smog check due. I have a Smarty which I just put back to the stock mode. How long or how many mile are required before the history is removed. Is there a way I can check it before I take it to get it smoged? I have a normal reader and the Smarty. Thanks

    Hey guys. I have a 99 Dodge 2500 quad cab 4X4 5 speed. I was having an ongoing issue with WTS light either being delayed or not coming on at all and LP not cycling so I replaced ECM with a known good one and replaced ECM wiring harness with a new one I found at Firsttruckparts. When I was troubleshooting LP not running( before I replaced ECM and harness) I pulled the fuel system relay and got a P1689 code and truck wouldn’t start. So now, after replacing those I still had code and no start. After a lot of troubleshooting and wire checking I figured out on the fuel system relay that I have 12 volts to pin 86 from ECM until I plug the relay in and then it drops to ab…

  12. I was wondering if anyone has sent their VP44 out to be refreshed/rebuilt versus doing the typical purchase of a rebuilt unit and sending the old one in as a core. The pump on my truck has basically been running fine for 130K miles even though it was a reman of unknown origin installed by the previous owner in 2011. I thought it would be interesting to have whatever shop rebuild mine and send it back and let me know what it looked like at teardown. . .is my filtration working effectively, does it show signs of low quality fuel, was the timing piston scored, etc. I have been having an odd starting issue intermittently for about 4 yrs/50k miles where sometimes…

    Just finished installing the Fass 165, tried to prime it but the pump doesn’t have power. I unplugged it from the Fass and tested it and I’m getting 0volts. The relay is getting 12V from one of the plugs. Has anyone had a problem with Fass wiring before?

    I have had weird electrical problems with the truck for years. But never let me down except original vp44 crapped out a year in a half ago and replaced it. My belt snapped in my driveway Recently and I needed to get new battery as well so I decided to inspect clean or replace a few grounds and do a few things on the truck. Battery, 2 new terminals, oil filter change and fuel filter change add a new fp gauge sensor and buy all new fuses for the truck while Inside and out and new tensioner because it was worn out.   15. After everything I have read on the internet I understood that the PCM off my truck had to match not only the make, model, transmission etc but also numbers mine being P56046355. I was sold a PCM by a gentleman who swore up and down that a 2002 would work on my truck. It doesn't work and now I need some help purchasing a PCM. Can this PCM be programmed to fit my truck? Is this gentleman correct when he says he asked his friend who knows all there is to know about Dodge, cummings etc?     So you all seen my post about being pulled over twice for a failed driver-side tail light? I pulled the entire pigtail out and the bulbs and found a single wire that folded over and broke the wire but the jacket was undamaged. As I gave a small tug on the wire it separated completely. Sadly the wire itself was oxidized pretty badly. The break was within about 1/2 to 5/8 from the plug. I attempted to solder it back together and shrink tube the repair but the wire just refused to accept solder from being oxidized so badly. I opted to use a standard butt splice and seal the ends the best I could and then taped the repair over. Then finally I was cleaning out the…

    So I just recently tapped my vp for the quadzilla and my new Timbo apps threw a cel. Started surging then threw the code. Never had one do this. I suppose Tim wont warranty it once you tap vp. I just hope its not related to tap. Set it to zero on the Iquad I guess its off.

    Hello, im currently installing my draw straw and i cut a hole in the tank where i thought it would fit, but it turns out the fittings don't have room to clear when the housing is pushed down all the way. How would i remedy this? should i put a 45 degree fitting on one side? or maybe cut another hole somewhere on the tank and somehow fix the hole i cut already? interested where everyone else has put there straws. Thx im in a bit of a pinch right now so all help is appreciated.

I decided I could really benefit and hopefully contribute to the wealth of knowledge here! I have had this 01’ 24 valve since 08’ she’s been worked hard and now the 2nd vp44 has bit the dust at 250k miles. I have a 93’ 12 valve engine(ve pump) with only 78k miles just begging to go to work. It has 3k gov. spring, fuel pin/afc mods, 5x.012 injectors, and he351 turbo.
