2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. I'm looking for an aftermarket fuel pressure sensor that I can use that would be compatible with my edge juice w/ attitude. I've found them on Amazon.com but want to pick one up at AutoZone so if I have any issues I can return it. Anyone have any part numbers? This is the Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RCPDPRQ?ref_=pe_344980_242109030_em_1p_3_ti&redirect=true&pldnSite=1

  2. I finally had some time and good weather to work on my project. The goal is to replace the black boxes that may be unobtainable in the future. The speed/ position sensor circuit was reworked again it is an advanced and adaptive design now part hardware and some digital signal processing. This is the 4th gen now. It syncs up fast and has good noise filtering. It also does not rely on hard coded zero crossing thresholds. It learns and saves the last known good values in non volatile memory for fast start ups. The cold weather revealed some problems which are fixed now. The injection drive has to be hammered harder and for longer time than…

  3. I got a fleetgaurd replacement valve for my stock engine mounted fuel filter. Are the two little O rings par to the installation or additional replacement rings for the sealing plunger? Figured someone here already has done this. Only like $13 from Geno's. I've been waiting for changing the filter to replace the drain valve which leaked last time I did a filter change. Had to flip it open and closed a few times before it sealed. Maybe just dirty. Plus after new lift pump install I increased pressure from about 8psi to 20. Might have brought on deferred maintenance of the drain valve. Sounds like I better clean the input screen to my Raptor too. Dreading another seemi…

So i have a 57/62 borgwarner sxe and i absolutely love it some day down the road I wanted to do compunds. Guess that day came because a guy at work has done talked me into buying his s476 sxe. In my brain this looks like a nice tight towing compound set up but I'm worried about pushing the limits of the transmission and the head. Transmission has a 2 year old re build with a billet single disc torque converter and a shift kit with 150 psi of line pressure and DPP transmission fluid ( actually pretty solid stuff and cheaper then atf) head bolts are the s2000 equilivent head studs. What i cannot find is a clear answer on if my truck will hold together with this combo and w…

  5. So I am planning a week long trip to Yellowstone and the surrounding areas and figure I should compile a list of spare parts and tools to carry. There may be some mild off roading along the way. What would you consider essential spares to carry? Fan beltrad hosestire repair kitfluids (oil, coolant, trans)u joint?Extra fusesLight bulbsAre there any known common parts failures that are specific to 24v trucks that could leave one stranded?

  7. Being a 2nd gen owner and living in Northwest Ohio I have some rust on my truck. Most do around here. I have been reading, searching and reading some more about rust prevention. I have some rust on my '01 3500 that will get repaired/replaced with new metal but I am curious to see what everyone on the site here is doing to prevent this vehicle eating monster from getting their truck. I have read that an oil based undercoating that is applied annually seems to work pretty well. It would have to be included in your maintenance program in the fall for winter preparation but has been pretty effective. There is also a DIY variant that could be done at home with used motor…

Mike, sence I'm no longer running the power puck, Do you think if I install the RV/275's with the stock motor it'll get me close to the power/performance I had or will it need other help? The reason i'm asking, I'm not looking to hot rod in any way. Just kick it up a little, like the puck did with out the other problems. The puck only had appx 5000miles on it, wont trust one again. It did make pulling the trailer alot better. Thanks Ed.

Well so far I'm pleased with the injectors. I've seen to have a very slight miss that is very very mild and rare to occur. But so far I'm enjoying the +2 MPG increase to the fuel mileage. I'm now able to touch 21 MPG with winterized fuel in Idaho... Never done that before... But I got to admit you must be careful with the new found power that comes with the injectors. On wet or icy pavement things can horribly wrong quick.

So recently I made a long road trip from Alberta, and outside of Williston, ND I got hit with a dying VP...right out of the blue too. lucky enough I made it to Minot and got some work done the next day...really lucky, due to the oilfield there...reminds me of home in Cold Lake. Pretty sure it wasn't directly related to fuel at the moment it happened, because they got me into their garage there (at the Cenex) and we changed filters (mine were new, and I've got an inline BF1258 on the frame before it even gets to my canister (PF7977), I was using PS white...blah blaah blah...truck was recently purchased (it's a 2001 with 240k miles, had an airdog raptor, and a superchips…

  14. Ok so I'm exploring options for s472 sizing, as I've found one that's a 72/96 1.15 non gated housing. If I pair it up with a stock hx35 with 125 or 150hp injectors, would that be a good combo for towing, but more daily-ing than towing. I'm planning on starting a welding business and my welding rig doesn't have a ball so I can go get big sections of pipe or steel, and I've always wanted to put compounds on my truck.

Thinking about dropping to a 7x10 style injector instead of changing turbo should I go sac vco or dap sells a 7x10 sac for a decent price

Now that I have conquered the front end on this thing, It is time to start saving for some fun stuff! I am pretty set on not getting too crazy with it, and I would like to maintain my mileage so the rv275 sounds like the right way to go for me. Just wondering where you guys have gotten yours, if you got the full injectors or just the nozzles. Also if you just get the nozzles are there any precautions I should be aware of. Chris

So I'm still figuring out the scan gauge. Does boost or horse power work right on a cummins? Loop and ignition timing give me no readings is that right? The boost seem right up to about five then is different there on up compared to my ispro gauge. I've got the cutoff set at 19.
