July 27, 20159 yr Owner Got that whipped it's $2.839 in Riggins, Idaho right now. Gasoline is $3.129... Sucks to be gasser owner now... The 96 dodge is parked under a tree...
July 27, 20159 yr Author ..but then the question begs to be asked, why is diesel cheaper then gas now? I heard the corn ethanol subsidy ended?
July 27, 20159 yr It's possible, maybe a farmer will chime in. All I know is I filled up at $2.59 in Two Hatbors, MN.
July 27, 20159 yr I got $2.77 the other week out here in Northwest Ohio. It was $2.55 about a month ago. Diesel has been cheaper that regular out here for a couple months now. I was just on the east coast last week and diesel is more expensive that 87...
July 27, 20159 yr 2.56 for diesel here 2.75 for gas. thought in my mind " yay it's cheaper to drive the truck than the bmw haha"
July 27, 20159 yr $2.86/gal for #2 and $2.89/gal for unleaded. Factor in the commuting mileage and gas is still cheaper. Truck would be ~0.15/mile and commuter would be approx ~0.10/mile based on average daily driving mileage. If gas stays the same then #2 would have to drop to $1.88/gal to make it cost the same per mile. That doesn't account for the higher insurance for higher average annual mileage, more expensive tires, more expensive maintenance per mile, etc... It's really hard to make the truck cheaper to drive than the commuter.
July 27, 20159 yr X2 ^ But I think I made it work going from gas to diesel in my commuter cars! I have a '01 VW Jetta TDI that regularly gets 50+ in combined daily driving. I also have a '12 VW Passat TDI (clean diesel) that I regularly get 42 mpg in combined daily driving. This car replaced an '09 Toyota Camry that regularly got 31 mpg in combined daily driving. All the mpg numbers (gas and diesel) go higher if you consider only trip results but the overall results remain the same.
July 27, 20159 yr When your Commuter is a 25 year old BMW 5.0l v12 haha, not hard to get the truck to do better mpg wise.
July 27, 20159 yr Owner AH64ID at those prices I would have to say your right. For me though with the wider gap I can justify the diesel usage.
July 27, 20159 yr AH64ID at those prices I would have to say your right. For me though with the wider gap I can justify the diesel usage. fuel compare.png Your big benefit for the diesel is the mileage the '96 gets. Likewise it takes gas being quite a bit higher to make it cheaper to drive the gas. Gas pickups just plain burn a lot of fuel. This current tank on my pickup is pretty good thou and probably the best of the year. I am at 1/2 tank and 370 miles, which is something I haven't seen in years..... mainly due to having a commuter and rarely driving the truck for a 1/2 or full tank without a trailer or pair of ATV's in the bed.
July 27, 20159 yr I rarely pay attention anymore, just pump and pay. but did take a gander today, diesel 2.69 / 87 unleaded 2.79 / 91 premium 3.29 Enjoy it while you can, once winter heating oil demand jumps as well as harvest time prices will jump back up real quick again.
July 27, 20159 yr You all are so lucky. $2.95 at cheapest here for diesel and $2.65 for regular unlead. Don't you guys have any fuel taxes out there??
July 27, 20159 yr I think ND and federal taxes together are around 42-43 cents a gallon IIRC without looking it up.
July 27, 20159 yr Why yes we do. Actually I think MN gas tax went up recently to help cover government lack of planning/overspending. Or maybe it was tobacco tax...both affect me...cough cough
July 27, 20159 yr I wouldn't know, I never picked up the tobacco habit chew or smoke, but I do enjoy my liquid libations.
