I have a 00 dodge ram 2500 cummins with millions of problems. One of the issues I'm trying to address is the cold start. It looks like to me its blowing out a thick blue smoke. And when I drive down the road it dumps out for probably a good 2 mins. Then clears up and go backs to the black smoke. What could that be? I did pull a p0382 code.

    What's it smells like, could be valve seals. If doesn't smell like oil, it could be worn out injectors or vp. How many miles, any blow by, smoke on cold start is if not seals, then fuel isn't burning

It could be a number of things, vp44, grids, injectors, air leaks.

Check your grid intake heater relays and ensure that the 4 90* elbow electrical connectors are on their posts on the relays. My rear relay had one wire that was off its post, and that was causing the constant P0380 code.

What's it smells like, could be valve seals. If doesn't smell like oil, it could be worn out injectors or vp. How many miles, any blow by, smoke on cold start is if not seals, then fuel isn't burning completely, then when temps go up its burning better. Could be compression. Need more info to go farther.

ECT and IAT values would be helpful.

 

Odometer and amount of miles on the injectors would help. If the injectors are over 100k to 150k miles time to replace them. Poor spray pattern can do weird things and weak pop pressures.

 

Valve guides and valve seals can also create oil smoke which is white. Then bad injectors can cause white smoke too. The difference is the smell of the smoke one smells like raw unburnt fuel and the other smells like oil.
