A friend of mine has a 2013 Ford F-350, his son put gasoline in the tank. He had a half tank of diesel and he filled it up with gas. It is making a clattering noise. Can I just drain the tank and change filters or is it a total loss. The guy at the ford house says that they have to put a new motor in it. Anyone know?

Not familiar with Ford per say but this happens pretty often. There was a post here on a Cummins & they drained the tank, changed filters, purged the system & restarted. It's not good for them but a new engine? I don't think so.

Well... Ford runs some tight tolerances on their engines and has some light oil. But, it won't hurt to purge everything and start it and hopefully it will be fine.

I hate to say it most times out of ten even with the newer Cummins engine and gasoline typically does some serious damage to the engine in a short order. So for your friend I would purge the system and have everything re-tested again. (Compression, injectors, fuel pump, etc.) Also remember most of the fuel system rely on the lubricant of the fuel to lubricate the injector parts and such now with running gas through it all I wonder how much galling and damage there is to parts. Kind of like dumping diesel fuel in the crankcase it will wipe out the bearings pretty quick.

I wonder if adding TCW3 2 cycle oil (like so many of us do for the VP44 used on 24V Cummins) to the first diesel used to restart might lubricate the injectors & such quickly to minimize galling & seal damage. In any rate, it's worth trying a flush before signing on for expensive overhaul. I saw a guy stopped at a highway rest area on NY Thruway... had just done this.

Do the new Ford 6.7s run the same high pressure oil pumps to pop the injectors like the 6.o engine? I know a guy whose wife filled his truck (6.0) with gas and then ran it. Wiped out all the injectors and the pump. But didnt hurt the engine at all. Aside from draining the tank and changing filters I would break the fuel lines loose as close to the injectors as possible to get as much out of the system as possible to prevent further damage. Unfortunately if his dealership has caught wind of this he can kiss his warranty goodbye they will probably walk away from him at this point. Good luck keep us posted

agreed - injectors, pump, maybe lift pump. I'd not expect actual engine hard-parts damage. Just fuel lubricated things in the fuel system.

The new Fords are common rail, so no HPOP. I would drain it, add diesel and some lubricity additive (if it still has a DPF then I wouldn't use 2-stroke). And see what happens. I would prime it (assuming it's self priming like other HPCR's) a few times (bump start method) and go from there. I would also look for further advice from a Ford site... just not too many here are willing to be seen in one.

Yes, I'd like to know. The problem is, new diesels are too dang quiet, so it's easy to put gas in them. You need a loud truck, and then you won't forget.

95% chance the Ford tech doesn't want to fiddle with troubleshooting, diagnostics, checking for ACTUAL problems. There are a lot of parts changers out there, they go with "it needs an entire engine" because it's easy to do, they don't have to think, and they know it'll fix the problem. After all they don't have to pay for it.unless it was ran hard or for a while with the Gasoline in the tank it's probably fine.

I wish they'd get the gas pumps far out of the way of us diesel guys wantin' diesel. You know seperate them completely from the gas island. So much smarter and then there's no confusion/worry.

Like in Riggins, ID there is only one island with diesel/gas pumps and always taken up with someone pumping gas. I at least have the common sense to go to the gas pumps when I'm driving the gasser around. I won't plug up the diesel island that's just rude.

Had a guy rum 8+ gallons of gas through a three cylinder diesel motor at work. All the seals in the fuel pump were shot, fuel pump its self was shot, but engine was fine. So you might be alright.

Mike, in your neck of the woods is there a rural fuel delivery company? Back on the farm we would fill up our 500+ gal gas, on road, and off road diesel tanks to hedge fuel whenever we thought we could get it "cheaper." Heck, that and an easily removable in bed tank and you would be set for almost any trip.

Tried to help a fella tonight. He'd put 10 gal. gasoline in his '02 Dodge/Cummins.We siphoned all the gasoline we could, drained the fuel filter housing, pre-filled the housing with clean diesel fuel & installed the new filter & o-ring.Upon cranking on the starter, it wouldn't start or kick or anything.He said he'd run it from 1 exit to another...maybe 4 miles then it quit running.No Check Engine light & no codes or pending codes.Ya'll think his injector pump is junk?

Actually I would say his starter need to be bench tested.

Are you saying the starter wont turn or the engine wont start when the starter turns it over?

Too bad they don't have a toy snake that pops out when you open the fuel door...... springs out at the wife, almost heart attack speed, but will wake her up to read, 'DIESEL ONLY DEAR' on the side of a bright orange snake.
