List of problems...
Great post. I think a bench test for my alternator is in order too. My truck shifts funny around 35-40 mph. I'm not sure if the convertor is locking and unlocking or if the trans upshifts and then downshifts. Does this sound like an apps sensor that's bad on mine? I reset the apps last week and seemed to be a little better.

Headlight upgrade-- tips and gauging interest
I used the white rubbing compound on my headlights and it helped a little. I always put the factory fog lights on with my low beams.

I like that plan.

injection lines
I used to use stainless lines when doing natural gas conversions on vehicles and it was a pleasure to work with. It also looked real nice and I believe it was good for 10,000 psi. You don't mind spending a little more when you can see the quality that you spent your hard earned money on.

Electric Fans?
Great pics Andy thanks, and I also just learned from you that powder coating is available clear. I remember when it first was available around here that they only had black.

Electric Fans?
It would be interesting to see how many horsepower that it takes to turn a stock shrouded fan mounted in front of a radiator at 1,750-2,000 RPM. I guess if I hooked up a 5 or 10 HP electric motor to the fan 1:1 ratio that would tell the story pretty fast. Another project for another day...........

Electric Fans?
Did you notice any difference in throttle response with the fan off? It must be quieter too. A pic of the electric ones would be nice for sure. I know Horton sells a fan clutch setup but it would surely cost more than the electric setup plus taking the fan off the water pump will probably help it to last longer too. One thing about this site is that there sure is alot of input on tips and tricks from the members as far as what mods or repairs that they did.

Replacement doors/ bottom panels
I just put the running boards on my truck to try and keep some of the salt and slush off of the rocker panels and the door seams at the bottom. Cross Canada auto body sells alot of panels but I'm not sure if they have a depot in the USA or not. My cargo door latch was seized shut at the bottom when I bought my truck from the water being thrown into in over the years off of the front tire. It took a 6 foot 2X4 prying from inside, alot of oil and a friend with a screwdriver and a hammer to hit the bear claw latch at the same time to pry the door open, so make sure to keep the cargo door latches well oiled on the trucks that have suicide doors.

5w40 full synthetic vs 15w40 dino
I just changed my oil last week and I bought Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W40 for $22 for a 4 quart jug I think it was at Walmart in Detroit. In Canada that same bottle of oil at Walmart is $41. After lashing my valves, changing my oil and adding 2 cycle oil to my fuel my engine is alot quieter on a cold start even at 10 degrees without plugging it in overnight. In the summer I was running Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic.

That same compressor in Canada is probably $599.

Windows - Service Packs
That's cool to have those downloads available. Do you run XP on your computer or are you using Vista? I've had XP for about 5 years and really like it since it is what I learned on.

Elk herd
We don't have any Elk around here at all but there are lots of deer, coyotes, fox and a few rabbits. So many people feed the deer that the population is massive now.

No I never had a dealership but I did race my car out of one in 1980 and my dad sold cars out of one after he retired from Chrysler in 1979.

Wishing all a happy 2010
Happy new year to ya'll. Looking forward to learning on this site and maybe passing along some knowledge that i have too. This is the first site that i have ever been involved with like i am but i think it is worth while since there seems to be alot of smart people that are on here all of the time. Michael has given me enough info that my truck runs fantastic.

Electric Fans?
Do you know of anybody that has switched over to running an electric fan or fans on their CTD yet? I think that will be another project that I will put on my list for spring or summer. It's gotta be better than swinging that big fan around. I used to take the fan right off of my gasser trucks in the winter for a couple of months at a time. They are alot quieter and and have better throttle response without a fan in the winter plus they heat up better, as long as you don't have too much city stop and go driving. I believe the Derale fan company sells fans that have a built in adjustable thermostat for their fans now but I know for sure that Derale sells a kit with a coolant sensor and a potentiometer [$44.95] to adjust the temp that the electric fan kicks on at [ like the one that I have on my race car]. Actually for the price that is a cheap fix for any car with an electric fan that has "issues" and doesn't want to work anymore because of a wiring or sensor problem.

Carter fuel pumps
I'll have to check at the dealer in Canada to see if they have the heaters since we have Canadian warehouses that supply the dealers here. You might contact Mancini Racing in Detroit, www.manciniracing.com ? I think might be their website. From what I heard Chrysler is emptying some warehouses and Mancini had a bunch of that stuff for sale as they always have in the past for Chrysler. They have this pump on their site:http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/chucker54_2084_9531548 CARTER - 14-16 psi 100 gph Get the fuel flow you need. These universal rotary vane electric fuel pumps from Carter operate using leaded and unleaded gasoline, gasohol, and fuel boosters. They have an internal pressure regulating valve, and feature free-flow fuel delivery. These pumps have no points to burn out, and no shaft seals to leak or deteriorate. Easy to install, these universal fuel pumps come with a complete installation package and instructions. $122.95 CARP4601HP

Newbie, which lift pump??
Actually my fuel filter is new and I am going to keep changing it so I don't have a problem there. I didn't want to put the gauge after the filter today since I had to drill/tap the banjo bolt and didn't want to risk there being a little piece of metal that would go into the VP44 so I figured for now I would just put it between the LP and the filter to be safe for the holiday weekend anyway. The lift pump is about 3 weeks old and I put a new rotor in it that I had made that is solid and doesn't have the plastic coupler in it that always strips out and fails as the stock rotors do just for piece of mind. I'm pretty good at nursing the pedal since I can't afford to drive the way that I would really like to, lol.

My 93 shifted awesome. That was a great truck and alot of fun to drive. I oil sprayed that truck with STP oil treatment and 50 weight oil and that truck is still running around!

Newbie, which lift pump??
Actually I installed the fuel pressure gauge before the filter so it is actually reading where the fuel goes into the filter housing after it leaves the pump. I will need to go for a ride and get another reading as I still had an airlock in the top of the filter housing after I installed the new banjo bolt and should have bled it right away but I was too cold and wanted to get going. I drove to a friends shop and bumped the starter and bled it just before I came home but I didn't get into the throttle hard enough to see what the pressure drop was. I still have to hook up the light for the gauge too. I was going to tie it into the ashtray light circuit but I was cold and said it can wait til tomorrow. That Airtex pump is about $300 in Canada so I would need another trip to Detroit to get it. I just don't have the money to do anything else on this truck. 2009 was a bad year financially but 2010 will be alot better and then I'll get the fuel deal sorted out. Thanks for the imput, I do appreciate that.

Fuel leak
The banjo bolt that I bought at the parts store today part# 256425 for $5 had bigger holes than the stock Cummins one actually. It doesn't need to be super tight, especially with only 12psi of pressure, the area of that bolt would probably be less than 1/2 a sq. in so maybe 5 pounds which is very little, especially if you figure that a 1/2" grade 8 bolt has a tensile strength of about 55,000 pounds. The only part I was concerned with is having to drill so deep into the head of the bolt to tap it for the 1/8 pipe thread for the fuel gauge but I have the original bolt in the glove box with the wrench and washers to replace it if I need to. I also installed a 1/4 turn petcock before the gauge fitting in the banjo bolt so I can just shut that off if the line has a leak.

Newbie, which lift pump??
It looks like my fuel tank will be my next project on this non-stop work on my truck lately, lol. I installed my fuel pressure gauge today and the stock lift pump is producing about 12 psi at idle and about 5-7 under hard acceleration so it isn't too bad I guess. Now I will be able to monitor if I have a fuel pickup issue in my tank if the gauge drops when it shouldn't, but I still need to pull the tank and look at the sending unit. I did release the "air lock" at the top of the fuel filter once I went for a ride.

BHAF filters...
I think I will keep my truck fairly stock. I own an Outlaw late model race car that'll give me a thrill on the race track when I need it. The problem is that if I hotrod my truck I can't keep my foot out of it, lol.
