Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
That church was incredible. Took 145 years to build, probably takes that to clean it too, and just across the street is the Royal residence but the Danish Queen wasn't in residence at the time, she is touring Denmark right now I wasn't really too keen about going to Copenhagen as I don't like big cities but it is a mixture of both old and new and was really safe, not too crowded just right

Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
Checked out a music sort of association building right in the old part of Svenborg. Building is from the 1700's old wooden barn type building which is a bar but run for musicians to sort of drop in and play. My brother in law volunteers there and plays guitar there too

Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
I also bought a small see throught sticker for the windscreen which has a picture of a traffic island with markings on it to remind me which way to drive, once back driving on left you just turn the sticker round.... genius really It's about 30 years since I drove on the right, we now have sat nav so should be ok, not looking forward to the first 50 miles though There was some talk a few years ago when we were in the EU to make the change here to drive on the right..... people made their views on that crystal clear so much so that it was shelved and fast

Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
Pretty much all ready to go, we'll be leaving around midday tomorrow, go to get to Harwich before 7.00pm so should have plenty of time, ferry sails at 11.00pm and arrives at the Hook of Holland at 8.00am. Then a 300 mile drive to the midway hotel for the night in Sittensden Germany half way between Bremen and Hamburg we then have to catch a ferry in southern Denmark to the island where Svenborg is, this ferry cuts out a lot of driving and is only 50 minutes, cost £34 which in Danish Krone is thousands but 1 Krone is £0.11 so 11p Had to buy headlight stickers which block off light to the left as that now becomes oncoming traffic and a GB sticker for the rear so when us left driving people cause a huge accident by driving the wrong way they know who to blame Already scoped out the Harley parts suppliers on the way to see if I can get pistons and rings etc for my project

New Turbo
Steel turns blue between 560F and 590F so bearing in mind what a EGT probe would show (anything from 240F idling to over 900F on my truck) blue is fine Would end up maybe steel grey which you wouldn't see anyway and once it's got some rust on it you can't see it https://www.anvilfire.com/21st-century-blacksmithing/temper-colors/ probably not quite the same steel as the chart but close enough to get the idea of it all I use charts like these quite a bit when hardening pins and bushes I make

Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
Yes thats it, the thursday night hotel is about half way between Bremen and Hamburg and Jutland is off the map on the east coast of Denmark above the end of the map I used the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland 30 odd years ago 2 years in succession taking aid to children in Belarussia that was effected by Chernobyl, 10 or more landrovers with trailers both years with everything from food/clothes/medicines/ medical equipment, very scary, followed the whole way in Belarussia by big black cars that followed for say 5 miles then turned off to be replaced by another, thing is we were followed for maybe 500 miles by only 4 or 5 cars, they must have thought we couldn't read the registation plates At least Denmark is safe They say the Danes are the happiest people on the planet in a poll, cost of living is very high, tax is very high but the state covers a huge amount of costs properly

- Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
My brother in law lives in Denmark, he's been there for maybe 40 years, wife and 4 kids, he's 70 next week and my wifes birthday the day after, my wife hasn't seen him for close on 10 years. So we're driving to Denmark starting on the 1st June. Ferry from Hawich booked and sails at 11.00pm so plenty of time to get to there, it's about 175 miles pretty much direct east for us, the route actually goes via a major road upgrade that I was on with the UK Cat dealer as field service engineer so will be good to see it actually finished and being used. Ferry arrives at the Hook of Holland Thursday morning We then have about 400miles to drive to a hotel in Northern Germany that we booked for the night, We then have 500 miles or so to drive to Svenborg where he lives although he had booked a ferry crossing in Denmark that does cut some driving out, we couldn't book it as only Danish speaking and phone booking only. As he retired a couple of years ago he's learning to play the guitar so we got him a Fender Telecaster for his birthday so we're taking that out. We then leave his house around the 6th or 7th (can't remember) and I booked a beach cottage in Jutland which is a part of Denmark right on the west coast in a nature reserve. We then have maybe 1000mile drive and ferry home Gutted I have to drive my wifes volvo xc40 and not my ram, we did originally want to take our 5th wheel trailer but the ferry from the UK to Holland was £1500, ah well put the miles on the new junk not my truck Been trying to get everything fixed that I need to before I go ( the joys of working for yourself) just fitted a Honda engine in a power barrow that had totally the wrong output shaft, camshaft, and sump as the owner didn't check the oil and it seized, 2 hours earlier he posted on face##ck a pic of this power barrow loaded up with concrete fence posts with the caption " work smarter not harder" smartest thing he could have done at the start of that day was check the engine oil delivery of the correct new Honda engine was November, so go a mower engine, same designation and changed the sump, camshaft and made a bush in the lathe to upsize the crank output from 22.2mm to 25.4mm, skip and belly plate back on tomorrow and then get UK stickers and headlight changers for the car and we're off- Transmission Cooler Options
I wouldn't have thought stop and go traffic would be a problem heat wise, my truck trans temp cools down when in stop/go, towing heavy is where the heat comes from especially when on the convertor. When you fitted the new trans did you flush the stock cooler ? if in any doubt about it then a new stock replacement ( Mishimoto or whatever) stock location benefits from the fan when in traffic. Then if you really want to add another stick a aux cooler under the bed somewhere and as @Mopar1973Man says it can be wired for fans to come on either at a set temp or on a switch I've never had a trans heat problem with my truck, although I did check the level on friday and it looked a bit too dark for my liking so once I get back from Denmark 1st to 15th of June I'll be changing the fluid, that being said I've never really looked at the cooler so I just took a look on rockauto at a stock trans cooler, It does look a little big, narrow and flimsy to mount under the bed especially on a short bed but I could be wrong As for your question, you stock cooler is just a cooler and if it's an aux under the bed it won't care assuming you can find somewhere to mount it that is- Fel Pro head gasket gave up in 4k miles
I'd not considered that but good point- Fel Pro head gasket gave up in 4k miles
Stock turbo wouldn't do it I don't think, more likely timing too high which does cause high combustion pressures only because the crank and rod angle isn't ideal when the gases are expanding VERY fast after the cylinder fires, that expansion does need to be able to push downwards on the piston, if the piston is only just past TDC because it fired too early forces are huge and it can lift heads, every cylinder that fires is basically a bomb trying to either lift the head off or drive the piston down Think of it like pedaling a bike, if you try to push down hard with the pedal near 12 oclock all you do is stand up wait until it's at 2 to 3 oclock and it's easy, wait too long though and power is lost- Something else to keep me occupied
I finally got the shifter mechanism figured out. I spent about 5 hours day before yesterday looking on the floor for this top hat bush with no luck, yesterday I went into the shop determined to rip everything outside until I found this little bush, 10 minutes later I found it, hadn't hit the floor as I thought ( I was sure I saw it fall to the floor) it had fell into the 1 1/4" socket I used to remove the primary sprocket Figured out the top hat bushes do not sit under the spring bar for the selector quadrant but sit on the selector fork pins that sit in the quadrant Crankcase now split, started looking for a press to press the crank out of the left case but cannot find anything thats made in a country I would buy from so I'm spreading some thought onto that. Good job I went all the way as one of the rear mounting bracket bolts was too long and has slightly cracked the right case easy repair from the inside- Ok this is starting to make me mad
It all comes down to every single person, company, business getting into bed with China to "save" money, some companies do have an iron control over design and quality, most don't I was looking for a shop hydraulic press to press the crank out of a ironhead case... around £80 for a 6 ton press...... every single one on ebay listed as UK stock but down at the bottom of the page the real supply address.... yes china I'd rather leave the crank in the case and never touch is again rather than buy a chinese press The west is filling up Xi Pings coffers just as we have done with Puckin and we will rue the day if we already don't, you guys have some of your manufacturing base left we in the UK on the other hand don't, most large manufacturing companies here are foreign owned. Our stupid government is only just now putting the brakes on the private sale of a chip manufacturing company here selling to a chinese company, the chips are used in the military....... this should never have got out of the starting blocks- Something else to keep me occupied
Surely there cannot be anyone as impulsive or stupid as me although I usually just throw all parts into a box and then when the build comes and it might be months just put it all back together, this thing might just be the ultimate test.... I found this site.... priceless http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/sportster_history- Truck prices are up
I watch a Uk program about a auction house in North Yorkshire..... Thornton le Dale, Mathewsons, program is called Bangers and Cash, it's on the internet so available to all, everything motor vehicle, UK, USA, everything Prices are well eye opening to say the least, I wish I'd barn stored every vehicle I have owned I watched one program with a Mini Cooper S fetched out of a small garage that the roof had fell in years ago this mini had to be strapped onto a pallet it was that bad, it would not have been good scrap unless there's a market for iron oxide, it was certainly over £20k and I want to say £40k but can't remember https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/bangers-and-cash/- Something else to keep me occupied
pulled the trans out of the cases this afternoon, I had bought a Haynes manual ( I know not great but better than nowt) off of Mr Bozo supposed to be delivered today, delayed until tomorrow so me being Mr impulsive and knows everything went ahead and pulled the trans...... DUH in my stupidity I removed the 5/8th bolt with the lock tabs on as well as the 4 trans cassette bolts, trans in a million bits on the floor, the 5/8th bolt holds the selector mechanism and once that bolt is out it all falls to bits. There is a preload bar and springs sat on 2 rods in the case and 2 small top hat bushes that protects the ally case from the spring ends one dropped out and hit the floor, spent 3 hours looking for it with no luck, going to waste 2 hours tomorrow and if I still can't find it I'll make a pair on the lathe, and there is the problem.... the motor is in my lathe shop which is toasty due to the house biomass boiler being in there too BUT there's bits of steel everywhere from shavings to 4" bar and everything inbetween..... needle and a pile of hay comes to mind I hate it when I do something stupid- Truck prices are up
Wow thats serious $$- Something else to keep me occupied
Got the motor out this morning, made a long plate that bolts to the 4 rear engine mounts out of 10mm steel, bolted up my other engine stand to it, lower down on the long plate I cut another plate to pick up the lower fingers of the engine stand I made the plate long and hanging below the motor so if needed I can add a box section under the motor to the front and then pick up a front engine mount. I'll get pictures maybe tomorrow. Pulled the cams and followers, over the next few days I intend to remove the primary drive and clutch then take it off the stand and split the cases just really to check everything, crank and rods appear to be ok but may as well check also the cases are minging so will be going for a bath, also gives me the chance to look at the gearbox. Done a bit more research on the engine number and It looks like it's a 84 ironhead 1000 which was when new a XLX, frame now is a 93 so thats being sold. Everything on this is pants, oil tank for instance has been bodged to fit the 93 frame, mounts have been chemical metalled onto the tank then 1/2 a tube of silicon to seal what I think was a very bad attempt at welding brackets on, can't yet see what's going on with the oil tank as, well the chemical metal is as hard as well "metal" so will need ground off, I don't need it but if I can sort it out it's £55 on ebay, frame might be £300 to £400 with no numbers, i'll be keeping the numbers to register the new hardtail frame WHEN that happens There is also most of the rest of it which will be sold, not sure yet what to do for wheels/brakes, it has a spoke rear disc braked and a ally front single disc, I would love to go drum with a twin shoe up front, suppose I could use any drum wheel as I have a lathe so can make spacers etc. Plan is to get the motor sorted, by then I'll have decided on the rest pic is just right for how it needs to look, this a WLC from 1942 or so the advert says- Replacing head gasket
That would really depend on the gap the fuel can get out of Look at it this way, take some injector line nuts off of the injector/crossover tube and the end of the line will spring or move away from it's tapered seat, some on the other hand will stay where they are and quite tight too needing a slight tweek to get the line out. Now slightly slacken a line nut off to bleed and some lines move away some don't, the ones that move away will dribble, the ones that stay tight on the seat will spray and everything inbetween. Slackening lines to test a VP isn't really conclusive because of this variable, all you can hope to see is fuel at every line, one of the only ways to be sure, and for the record I would not even think about doing this is a made up line and a spare injector, the made up line gets the injector out of the engine for observation, I've seen people do this, you would want the injector in a clear container of some sort as fuel spray out of an injector is dangerous to say the least, As i've said I would not even think about doing this The other way is similar but without the injector and cc what is delivered on each cylinder, this is difficult due to each needs the same amount of time (this is part of a fuel pump test on the test bench) - Road trip to Denmark..... wednesday 1st June
