  1. Being an electromechanical part there are many failure modes. Some stick open, some stick closed, sometimes the coil fails, sometimes the casing gets melted from an external source, over current, sometimes the terminals get corroded....you name it. However like ISX said they don't fail often. The ones that do are just cheaply manufactured. I.E. Mitsu fuel pump relays.
  2. That is b.s. The cop went over board over a light?! Come on.Having been harassed by the Northglenn, Co Police (3 officers and a woman in plain clothes) before I completely understand. I posted this elsewhere before and received a lot of accusations. I left work and turned onto the main road. I slowed down for a light when it turned green. I believe I was reaching for cigarettes or something when the cop turned his lights on. I pulled over and he came up and asked for my license, insurance, and registration. I complied and gave it to him. He came back after a moment and I asked him why he pulled me over. He just kind of smirked and basically asked what I was on. I told him nothing and repeated why did you pull me over. At this point he asks me to get out of the vehicle. Once again I complied. He asked if I knew who he was and I think I responded somewhat negatively like "do I really give a #$%^" He tells me he does something or other with drug enforcement blah, blah and makes a comment about my eyes not looking right. I told him look bud I just got off my third double shift and I am tired. Sure enough he wants to do a road side sobriety (field.) So I did it. Heel, toe and lift the leg...finger to nose you know the routine. He ends up saying I passed that part then gets his pen light out and once again says my eyes "aren't converging." So another police officer shows up and at this point I am getting pissed. He tells me to do another road side for the next officer while they are just laughing and having a good time. So once again I complete the test and pass but my eyes still don't appear right to them. Next another police officer shows up and the first officer pretty much tells me to do it again. I pretty much told him to go _____ himself at this point and that I was not a roadside entertainer so he ends up throwing a threat....do it or your license will be suspended. I told him that only works when someone refuses a roadside sobriety test. I had completed two and any judge would agree asking me to complete a third would just be harassment. So at this point I am told to sit on the curb and the first officer and some woman in plain clothes start searching my truck. I stood up and began approaching the truck yelling at them to get out of my truck. The other officers restrained me. He didn't find anything of course but had thrown everything in my truck on the floor. I began telling him how I would be filing a formal complaint with the police department and he pretty much shrugged it off.I then told him this was over and I was leaving and proceeded toward my truck once more. He ran up and said "I have something for you." It was a ticket that said 55+mph in a 40, the method of detections were radar and laser and he wrote "pacing." I told him exactly what I thought of him and left.Later I appeared in court on the traffic ticket. Basically I asked for a number of things but the judge told me in Colorado that you have no right to discovery at the traffic court level and that I needed to go to the county clerk and pay my fine. I still laugh every time I hear someone say innocent till proven guilty, cause I wasn't.I filed the formal complaint, not much ever came of it. Horray for justice, right?
  3. I am interested in knowing more about this problem. My truck doesn't miss but I had to drill my fuel cap otherwise it would blow the cap off the extra port on the fuel tank and start blowing fuel out like a geyser. Originally I thought it had something to do with the Powerservice I had added and then the weather getting warmer unexpectedly. My truck has been like this for over a year and still runs fine, but it seems like the EGTS are getting higher and the power is a little less.
  4. While not the same my wife worked at a fire safety company that was family owned and operated for the most part. One day the managers son got the bright idea of putting his younger cousin up to making a bottle bomb with some form of CO2. Needless to say it wasn't till the last minute when they thought it was dud it went off. The bottle was in his hand at the time and it turns out he didn't break anything but it caused enough swelling and the plastic cut his hand up pretty good.Regardless it is not wise to play with things of this nature and if you do at least use some common sense and do it in a manner that doesn't put others at risk.
  5. The box is covered, I just took the picture early. As for the Romex I had stapled it after the picture was taken. Is this acceptable as an anchor or do I need to use something else? Also there are two romex lines in the picture that appear to be connected but they are not. The original romex runs up around the foundation wall and back to the panel, I am still in question of whether or not this is ok. The other one seen in the picture running through the floor goes to another room. I haven't investigated what all it runs but I know it runs the outlet on that wall of the room. This house is a wiring nightmare. But we picked it up for cheap. There were a few illegal families occupying it when it foreclosed. We found wire splices in the attic that were laying in the insulation, they had wire nuts and electrical tape around them but no junction box. This was for a room addition. Most of the outlets in the added room and kitchen either had no ground (but the ground wire was in the box, just disconnected), hot/neutral reverse, or just didn't work.
  6. I am going to put money on the high side switch also.
  7. Lol, I took the pictures before I did that. I went around and sealed up a few with Great Stuff.
  8. To put it lightly this hasn't been my best week but I did finally get a full day off from both jobs so I decided to do a few things around the house. I had repaired a leaky main water valve and went to see if it was holding up good still (it was) when I ran across this. It almost looks like a mouse chewed on it. Normally it is fairly dark in this corner because the one light in the crawlspace just doesn't get this far but I had thrown a drop light in there when I noticed it. The wire was 12-2 Romex running to a dish washer the previous owner had installed. When we first bought the house the dish washer would leak due to whoever installed it running screwed through the sides (I guess they figured you mounted it this way?) Of course this water would slowly run down through the hole in the floor were the romex entered. This is probably what caused the corrosion. Either way I decided to throw caution to the wind and fix it since I was bored so off to the hardware store I went. Mind you I am not an electrician, just watched good ol' Dad wire up a few houses and did a little reading before starting. I decided not to run Romex like the previous owners did rather I went with a flexible metal conduit and 12 gauge THHN/THWN wires. I terminated the good part of the original romex in the crawlspace and installed a junction box. Then ran the flex conduit up through the floor. At the junction box I connected the wires with nuts and wrapped them with colored electrical tape dependent on whether it was a hot, neutral, or ground. I secured everything with appropriate clamps and anti-shock bushings then finished hooking up the dish washer. When I flipped the breaker there weren't any sparks, glowing, funny noises or anything and the dish washer worked just fine. No it's time figure out what chewed it and how it is getting in.
  9. The hub freezes to the knuckle after a period of time. A popular way to remove it is to loosen the bolts and then use a socket on the hub bolts and extension pressed up against something hard and immobile on the axle while turning the steering. Remember if you go this route, easy does it just a bit at a time. Rotate around the bolts until it is free.If the axle splines are frozen in the hub you can get a large 3 jaw puller from your favorite import tool store for cheap (after all you will probably not use it again anyway.) I actually have one that I had to use on a Dodge Dakota and it has been used many times without failure, just make sure you oil the threads. Soak it well in PB Blaster first. Remember that if they are frozen really bad there is the possibility of separating the hub which would require a replacement hub.
  10. I was looking under the truck after spotting a stain by the passenger side of my truck directly below the tire. It also appears that it has gotten on the tire. However under closer inspection this is what I found. I am going to check the vent tomorrow and see if it plugged up. But other than that has anyone changed the seals in a Dana 60 before?
  11. I would begin by checking the A/C Clutch Relay here is an except from section 24-17 in the service manual:Relay TestThe compressor clutch relay (Fig. 16) is located inthe Power Distribution Center (PDC). Refer to thePDC label for relay identification and location.Remove the relay from the PDC to perform the fol-lowing tests:(1) A relay in the de-energized position shouldhave continuity between terminals 87A and 30, andno continuity between terminals 87 and 30. If OK, goto Step 2. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.(2) Resistance between terminals 85 and 86 (elec-tromagnet) should be 75 Ϯ 5 ohms. If OK, go to Step3. If not OK, replace the faulty relay.(3) Connect a battery to terminals 85 and 86.There should now be continuity between terminals30 and 87, and no continuity between terminals 87Aand 30. If OK, see the Relay Circuit Test below. If notOK, replace the faulty relay. Also check for any shorts in any of the wiring.
  12. This is not always the case. In Colorado and most States for that instance you are guilty until you prove your innocence in traffic court. Most states also have no right to discovery at the traffic court level. Therefore if you want to fight a case such as these you have to appeal your case to a higher court system. Personally I see them saying pop your hood or you are getting fined $1000 as being an illegal search and menacing.
  13. Now normally bugs do not bother me I grew up in the country and we just pretty much expected some bugs there. However the other day I came home to see 4 or 5 yellow jackets flying in and out of my Dakotas truck mirror. I waited till night and shot a liberal dose of raid in there and the next morning this is what I found: There were even more still in the mirror, dead. I am going to have to disassemble it to get the comb out. With that over I went to the back yard for a smoke and there are 3 more combs along my fence, 2 on my gutters, and one up on a window air conditioner. Each comb has about 50 or so yellow jackets swarming around it. Now obviously I can wait till night or early morning to spray them but what sort of long term solution does everyone use. I have kids that play back there and the last thing I want is a swarm of yellow jackets getting them.
  14. Yes there are ways of "rebuilding" or re manufacturing the computers. However most re manufactures of electronic equipment don't repair items at the component level anymore. It is time consuming and tedious to repair small surface mount electronics. They typically open the unit and chuck a new board in it. If your lucky you will find some electrolytic capacitors that lost their dielectric and are incapable of filtering or holding a charge any longer. Occasionally there are diodes that have broken down and flow electrons in both directions, or a simple power transistor that doesn't work appropriately. However I have never opened the Cummins/Dodge computers so I wouldn't even know if they used electrolytic capacitors, i'm sure they use the rest of the components but they are likely to be surface mount. When it comes to the integrated circuits and surface mount components often times datasheets are hard to find if not non-existent to anyone but the manufacture. I would say just get a new one with a warranty and remove the hassle of going through one dead computer after another, besides you get a warranty. Although these parts are rather expensive new.
  15. 7500 miles. Currently I have Shell Rotella, before then Vavoline premium blue, before that Delo. I don't get oil analysis performed on my oil, but the truck is still running great despite it's age so I am not worried.
  16. Bio fuels certainly can be rough on engines. Biodiesel that does not meet standards is hard on any engine because the trans-esterfication processor typically involves methanol and lye. Any biodiesel is hard on common rail engines, especially those with multiple injection events per power stroke mostly due to fuel/oil contamination. However the amount of CO2 being released from biofuels is a big debate. Because the CO2 was already here in the present time, it was absorbed through the plant during photosynthesis so really you are just releasing the CO2 the plant stored rather than digging up oil from millions of years ago and releasing CO2 that was sequestered millions of years ago. However don't for a minute think that I am a global warming buff. Personally I think the earth has a few tricks up it's sleeves still that man doesn't know about and we may just be in for a shock. Seems like every time we think we have it figured out it proves us wrong.I do believe the automotive market needs to diversify. I really think the United States needs to lead these changes because we need to be exporting more and importing less to truly improve the economy.
  17. Yeah something like that I could see causing more of a safety concern than preventing one. If the driver is unable to move the vehicle off a roadway they are very likely to be in an accident. My wifes Ford Focus has a seat belt alarm that is so distracting that I could easily see it causing an accident. I know I put up with it for a week before the dealership fixed it.
  18. I want to see a spreadsheet that compares the number of parts and cost of parts and service on each engine. I will guess that repairing a DMAX or Powerstroke is much more expensive than repairing a Cummins. My Cummins is easier to repair than my Magnum V6 in my Dodge Dakota IMO and they are both pretty roomy around the engine. The Powerstroke and DMAX just look cluttered. My dad always said that cluttered engine bays meant higher labor charges. So a good point to compare. Most buy diesels for long term durability and fuel mileage so maintenance is always a factor.
  19. Well as far as updates I managed to pull off 90hrs in one week. My wife is looking into doing photography and actually got an apprenticeship with a photographer. However she hasn't made a dime as of yet. It's really not as bad as it seems once you get used to it. However it sucks that you never have time to spend on your hobbies and what not.Hopefully sooner or later things will work themselves out and I wont have to work as much.
  20. Times are tough right now, many of my friends and family are without work. My job is no different. Recently we had a huge turnover in management staff. Luckily the new manager I have isn't bad at all. One of my previous managers took on a new job and was desperate for help so I took a job there as needed in the morning. Figured I liked them as a person and didn't want to leave them hanging. Scratch someones back and they will scratch yours right? I was putting in two days a week since I work in the evening at my primary job also it was a fairly large load with a newborn and three year old at home. Till today. My phone started going off at work and I saw it was my wife. She never calls me at work so I thought it must have been an emergency. I answered just to find out she had been fired. While the circumstances are unjust what can you really do? Colorado is on the side of the employer and they can pretty much fire you for no reason as they have the at will employment law. I haven't told my wife yet but I called the manager at my "as needed" job. And agreed to cover more a.m. shifts. I am going to be working there and then in the evening at my other job. Total time is 17 hours a day, 6 days a week. I figure our income will exceed just her and I working because I make quite a bit more per hour then she did. Nothing I haven't done before but I didn't have kids or a wife then. Kinda sucks because I enjoy spending time with my kids.I just keep trying to think one day things will turn around, seems like we just get dealt one blow after another. I suppose it could be worse we could both be unemployed without any cash flow.Well just thought I would rant.
  21. Since when did we start saying it is ok for illegal immigrants to trespass on a mans property, kill his livestock, break in to his home, and destroy his property. Then when he uses force to detain them on his property and turns them over the proper law enforcement agency we allow the illegals to sue the man for $32 million dollars. Then turn around and find him not guilty of civil rights violation but force him to pay $73,000 to 4 illegal women because he held them at gunpoint to detain them on his OWN property. Sorry but that is wrong. And quite frankly I think he should have been awarded a medal for doing something, not many others seem to take the initiative. http://patdollard.com/2010/06/civil-rights-violation-and-emotional-distress-16-mexican-illegal-aliens-sue-arizona-rancher-for-stopping-them-at-gunpoint/ http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb/20/nation/na-illegal-immig-rancher20
  22. Unemployment is an area I guess I would be unqualified to discuss. However in certain circumstances I understand why its there, but seriously I wonder why its so easy to get. I know people on it that seriously do not deserve it. One guy is on unemployment because his employer filed the paperwork wrong, however he blew his top at work and was fired for screaming profanity and threatening another employee. In the same instance I know another fellow that deserves it. He was laid off from his job and took unemployment until he found work. He spent countless hours but a month later he is working yet again. No promise this job will continue but at least he took the effort to find one. I on the other hand am embarrassed to take hand outs. We had a tough time growing up but neither my mother or my father ever allowed government benefits. When times were tough they got tougher and took what they could when they could and we dealt with it. Now they are doing good. I myself have had rough spots in the past but when they get rough I get to walking and find something. Sometimes all we need is the will power to not give up and the proper attitude so not to dwell on what has been done wrong to us.I just have problems with excepting things from the government. I don't want a big government, I expect things not to be perfect, I just want to be free. With freedom I accept the imperfections that come with it and do not expect to be taken care of.
  23. My Edge Attitude w/ Juice changes the maximum boost per level I am fairly sure. With it set on 0 I believe I get 18psi. With it set on 5 I can hit the mid 30's. I typically run level 3 and it tops out in the mid 20's. This may just be the required fuel it takes to hit these numbers, but it sure seems like it is controlling it.
  24. About 240k, I would have to check for exact numbers lol. Which reminds me to change my oil
