Time for New Injectors, will 7x10s be ok with stock turbo

Recommended Posts

Time for new injectors.  My engine load is down to around 2-3% and idle is at 900-950rpm.  My plan is to go with 7x10s and some ARP headstuds but I worry if my truck will be undrivable if my Quad goes out like Mike's recently did.  I know he said his didn't smoke too bad but I believe his turbo flows more air to clean it up.  I have just a stock HX35 with a boost elbow.  I don't want it smoking like a chimney if I have to drive it without the Quad.

Thoughts?

Still very drivable. No EGT issues. It only topped out at 1,100*F on a grade. Smoke well it would blow a cloud but quickly clear up. The bad side was the MPG fell out like a rock without the Quadzilla. I made a trip to Boise yesterday and filled the truck in Payette, ID and the entire 240 mile trip used a half of tank of fuel. This is super low for me I'm used to 300 to 320 miles to half tank.

But you have a different turbo.  Will it smoke a lot more with my HX35?

I hate to hear that Mike had his quad fail. Any idea why?

I just installed 7x9s this weekend on my hy35 and I wish I would of went bigger. Even with my quad off its nothing to drive and keep everything in check. I think that with the hx 35 you would be ok with 7x10s unless you are towing or just not paying attention while you drive.

Not by much... Your HX35W is a 54/60/12 My HX35/40 hybrid is just changing the compressor to 60mm. that's it. I'm producing only 30 PSI. No smoke by 10 PSI.

the hx35 is well paired with 7 x .010's  Without tuning your right foot control is needed.

I think Mike has ~100,000-150,000 miles on the quad.   That's alot of computer cycles, stuff happens I suppose.

Up that closer to 200k to 250k miles. I've got 420k now. Again the biggest thing is lack of timing and the huge drop in MPG. More or less wore that box out from every day driving 900 to 1,100 miles a week for the last 4 years. I'm sending the module back for them to study what happened to it. Since I'm on the beta test team and have been for years.

Placed my order today with DAP.  I went with new Bosch bodies and I also bought new cross-over tubes (I only want to do this once).  I also picked up a set of the "cheaper" ARP headstuds.

Thanks Lenny at @dieselautopower for letting me bend your ear a little before I pulled the trigger.

....and now I wait....

Bad ground wire was my issue with the Quad...

Lenny is a cool gent he's always there in a pinch! :thumbup2:

A bit of tweak and tune... Now I'm back to taking chunks out of my rear tires. I was showing off a bit for Eileen's Son and it pull firm in 2nd against the TQ Manangement, hopped into 3rd gear boost hit 49 PSI. The tires came loose and start smoking. Grabbed 4th and got just a small bark and a bit of spin and hooked up and heading toward 5th... She is dam quick...

As for the turbo difference... HX35/40 Hybrid 60mm compressor, 60mm turbine, and 12cm2 housing. As for the Stock HX35W is 54mm compressor, 60mm turbine, and 12cm2 housing... Mere 6mm difference on the compressor that's it. Flows the same amount roughly as the HE351 witthout the 9cm2 housing which is a choke point.

What happens tmw?

Tomorrow (today now) I put my injectors in.

Wasn't too bad of a job.  Took me about 3 hours to do, not including clean up and wasn't too difficult.  I think the hardest part was getting the lines on the back of the VP tight.  Not much room on that thing

I followed others recommendations and tightened the lines to the cross-over tubes before tightening down the injector hold downs.  Once it was all back together I loosened 1,2,4 lines and bumped the starter a couple of times to get fuel then cranked the motor while my son watched for fuel to spray out.  Once he saw fuel I stopped cranking and tightened up the lines and cranked a few more times and it finally caught.  It spit and sputtered like it was taking a fit but soon smoothed right out.

Took a walk around the truck while it idled and made sure all the tools were out from under the hood then closed the hood and took it for a ride.  I was really surprised.  With no tuning there is no smoke (as long as I drive it like a responsible adult :whistle2:).  After the temp came up I put the tuner to 5 (using a mid injector fun tune from @Me78569) and WOW :burnout:

Even with this tune the smoke was manageable unless I step on it while in a higher gear (did that once) and even then it cleans up quick.

I didn't do the headstuds today as my back was bothering me, so that will be for another day.  I just need to take it easy till I get those installed.  I have the quad set to defuel at 35psi so I think I'll be OK.

Did you get them set at 320bar by a chance, if you did that's why they are clean.

Mine are smokier then when I first put them in few years ago but still not bad, and now I believe I'm hearing an injector knock :duh: hope I'm wrong. Only have about 20k on them. Engine load is 4-7 rpm 811-818

I put 50's in mine last month. Was going to have them popped at 320, but then the consensus  came around that only bigger injectors should be popped that high so I just had them done to normal spec. On the pack it said AUG. 306, which I assume they were popped in Aug. to 306 bar. I realize everything has a tolerance but hoped mine would be on the high side of it. Screw it, they went in. My load had been 0 and rpm ~860. After the 50's went in I was pleased at the idle coming down to 785 but engine load was ~8-9. 100 miles later and I'm idling at 800 with a load of 4-5. Kinda suprised and dissapointed that they settled in so quickly and so close to the worn out zone. Not sure what to think. The whole injector discussion drives me nuts.

:wow:. Are you sure about that? That's higher than my worn out ones I replaced. I'm begining to wonder if idle rpm is a good indicator of injector condition.

Well guess I'm not doing too bad then, hard to believe I'm still holding 320bar, unless there's something else is off that our trucks are different on to make your load like mine and rpm higher. @Mopar1973Man any idea as to why the difference. I remember when I got injectors installed they were around 12 load I want to say. Need to find my old posts and see, @JAG1 don't even think about changing my data :shifty:
