2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

I got the sudden urge to creep underneath the truck earlier, and discovered an oil leak at the end of the transmission where the driveline connects. There's a gasket there and that's where the oil is leaking from. There's a drip there, I don't even wanna know how much fluid I've already lost just from driving it. Luckily I caught it in time and know it's there now. Anybody know what I'm talkin about? How hard of a fix is this?

  2. We have the 47e automatic transmission on our 99 Dodge Cummins... purchased with around 150K and we just rolled over 200K... When our truck was in the shop around 175K I asked our mechanic to flush the transmission and he was hesitant since we did not know whether the prior owner had regularly changed the fluids. Any thoughts? We are currently experience the torque lock problem around 45-50 mph that is addressed in several other posts on here... so we are going to replace the alternator in the next few days... So any other suggestions on preventative measures to prolong the life of our transmission would be great! Thanks

My buddy replaced his mount and told me it stiffened up the truck a bit. He thought if might even took away some shudder in lockup. I picked up a new one and put it in tonight. The old one was nasty. Definitely has fixed my shudder.

Hey everyone, Im new here and i have been having a problem with my 2001. I get a "grinding" noise from the transmission area that sounds like you are driving over a rumble strip. i can't figure it out what the problem is. I have tried pulling the relay for the trans out, removing the alternator fuse, and wrapping the ground wire in foil. This happens either I'm driving around town or on the highway. It does it under light acceleration but not under heavy acceleration. But it keeps making the sound when just coasting along or light pressure on the gas. I can only make it stop if I shift down to 1st and let my truck engine brake to a stop. Any suggestion would be great

  5. So I definetly need to replace the lines that run from the hard lines in the engine bay to the cooler up front on the radiator. Right now they are old rubber lines. But I want to use steel braided hose and some nice fittings. The guy at the trans shop recommended 8am fittings. My question is are their fittings on the hard lines that are in the engine bay by the crank case vent or are they just like barbed on the end? That's the only thing I can't figure out. Thanks guys

  6. 47re troubles: Replaced governor solenoid and sensor and filter last year, did band adjustment, tranny still slams into 4th unless I plan the shift and let off the throttle. Tranny searches between 3rd and 3rd lock-up with OD off going slow on the back roads but shifts strong at throttle. Transmission overdrive & lockup solenoid? Speed sensor too? Something else to replace while I have the pan off?...can't afford a built tranny till at least next year

Hi Guys,I have a situation where the truck once started (starts very easily) and I start to move off, it will often not change from 1st gear though the engine revs up (2002 auto tranny 57RE). Consequently, the truck moves at maybe 30kph. I have found that if I pull over, put the trans in park and shut the engine off and leave it for a minute or so and then restart and put it into drive, the truck will drive away normally, shifting through the gears as if nothing had happened. For the rest of the day the truck acts and performs normally.I have no codes show up and I have around 12 psi at idle and maybe 9psi at speed.Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening. Should I r…

I can get my NV5600 to shift if i am creative enough but it always wants to grind on upshifts. Notably worse between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th. 6th has never ground on me, and rarely a 3rd to 4th shift will. It never grinds on downshifts though. Also there is a rattling sound when idling second, usually when i am turning slow speed through a parking lot...but no rattling when accelerating while going straight. I am positive the sound is coming from the transmission. Any clues?

Wondering what I can do to help lower transmission temps drastically. The other day I ran a little over 200 degrees pulling a 7 thousand pound trailer. (Built tranny with triple-disk TC, shift kit, and heavy duty bands.) Do you guys recommend transmission coolers/fans? Drop some links in the comments of products that you have or have opinions on. Thanks a bunch! Also, have you guys read about the new Smarty MM3 tuning for 98.5-02's?!?

  10. Just got my truck back two days ago from tranny rebuild. I went to pull out with trailer today and make around 25 miles to fuel station. Tranny temp @ 195*, gears are not catching when putting into D,3,2,1 or R. I shut the truck off and turn it back on and it would make it maybe twenty ft before doing it again. I searched for codes and received the P0500 can this have anything to do with the tranny issue? I know what the code stands for. Thanks for any help

  11. @notlimah just a quick side question so not to get off topic. How do you like the Dynamic Stage 3? I am currently saving for a trans. Firepunk is close to me, but I am considering Dynamic.

  12. I have a 99 2500 with automatic Transmission that was just rebuilt and a new two disc tc. The first time I drove it after the rebuilt the transmission shifts quickly from 2nd to 3rd to 4th(O/D). It doesn’t happen when your foot is really in it but when you accelerate normally it jumps up and the engine bogs down. The transmission guy that worked on the truck told me it was an electrical issue on the APPS sensor but I want to get some other suggestions before throwing money at the wrong problem. Also the APPS sensor is a few months old

  13. Kind of an obscure question, as I was looking at the wiring diagram for my truck. (see link) @Dynamic If you have any input here... I would appreciate it. I am trying to figure out why the trans relay is in line with the alternator field. If you look at the PCM on the left side, about mid way down you will see a GEN FIELD DRV, in dark green. This field runs 100hz AC to the alternator from the PCM causing it to charge. Lower you will see a GEN FIELD OUT, returning from the alternator to the transmission relay. Why would they do this? Why not run the signal for the trans relay directly to the relay? Why allow the non steady state voltage reg…

  14. I read a while back somewheres that there's a resister you can put in to allow for higher trans pressure from aftermarket valve body and torque. Does anyone know where I can get one and instructions for install? Thanks, Donald

Is there a torque sequence and value for putting the auto tranny pan back on after servicing? Thanks.

My buddy that I go drag racing with has a 98.5 with a 47RE in it. After racing this past weekend he asked me when does my converter lock when I'm going down the strip. I told him that it locks between 75 and 80 MPH. He was suprised and said his didn't lock until he wa about to cross the 1/4 mile line at around 94 MPH. He also said when it does that he's only dropping about 200-300 RPMs. Does this sound like he has a problem, and if so can the shift point be adjusted? Thanks in advance for your vast knowledge!

  17. i have o2 3500 47re was working great no problems was hooking to my trailer, looked and need to move just a little, pulled up, and then it would not shift back to revears. binds up shifter, idicator came back to drive but no farther, i unhooked sheft lever at transmission, shifter went freely back to park so i could turn key off, at first i could shift low second and drive by hand at the trans. that is as far as it would go. after i shifted it a couple of times. and tryed a little harder to see if it would jump past whatever was holding, it,. now lever moves freely, anyone know what i might find when i drop the pan, is their any common shift parts that fail inside, any he…

Ok. I'm new here and have an issue I've been stumped on for 2 months. I bought a 99 24 valve that was a 5 spd truck, it came with all the automatic stuff from another 99. I have everything installed and all is good except the PCM. The PCM is the 56040199 which is verified a 99 automatic PCM, however when starting the truck, it acts like a 3rd gen with a transponder key. It starts, runs for 3 secs and dies.... It did that 3 times and now a no start and I know 2nd gens didn't have a transponder key. It has full communication with the obd2 connector but no CEL's and now a no start. I "borrowed" the PCM out of my 00 which starts, runs and drives the truck but I have no commu…

  20. When i am running on the highway @ 45-60 mph with my edge att. box on 1 or 2, (do not have VP pump tapped) and push the pedal down even slightly it seams as if the trans or T/C is slipping. It feels exactly like a clutch slipping in a Manual Trans. mabe not as violent. does not do this running on stock level. T/C was replaced by local Cottman shop w/ what ever brand they carry, was suppost to be HD good for 800ft/lbs torque. Is this a T/C lock-unlock eletcrical issue???
