2nd Generation Dodge Reliability / Performance

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel of performance and longevity. This includes tricks of getting more MPG, HP/TQ, or just getting to the next milestone.

  1. Started by Stanley,

So I'm mid way guess doing this and can understand he group of wires that get spliced into a larger gauge wire, those all get cut and put into a ring terminal at the suggested vp44 ground. Then a ground wire from drivers side battery to same ground spot at vp44 with other wires. The rest of the wires just go back where they supposed to go... Now I have the alternator wire that goes straight over to the fuse block. If I'm reading it right I'm supposed to remove it from here then connect back to alternator and route to POS battery on passenger side??? What am I doing with the blank location at the fuse block? Las…

  2. I heard a horrible noise when I depressed the brake pedal and then realized the steering and brake power assist were basically nonexistent. After reviewing the situation and knowing the power steering has been getting worse over time I ordered the Gould Vac pump kit and all new lines for p/s pump. I did not pull the trigger on a p/s pump yet because I was hoping to find something more robust or with higher assist compared to my current stock 170k unit. I thought about ordering a Borgeson but then heard some negative reviews regarding installation? Do you guys have any suggestions ? My truck is a daily street /play minimal tow use currently vehicle. I have never been pleas…

  3. I just bought the Quadzilla tuner with a new fuel sensor from DAP. I noticed that there's a brass valve that came with the fuel sensor, but I haven't looked at it enough to know what it's for yet. I've only ever installed and used the Edge Juice with Attitude on my Cummins pickups, so this is a totally new and foreign tuner to me. I'll be removing my older (most likely first generation - silver display and smaller screen) Edge Juice w/Attitude tuner that is currently on my pickup when I bought it last December and installing the Quadzilla. I plan to hopefully install it with the module in the cab if possible to minimize any Bluetooth issues with my…

What should I be seeing for max boost with my setup? The highest I have seen is about 24 lbs.

Have a couple random questions about my truck: 1. On start up, the puff of smoke is getting thicker and bluer. It also has a slight oil smell to it. Idling for a bit also starts getting an oily hint to it as well. I'm assuming that this is either turbo or valve seals. I don't think its valve seals because those are only 4 years old from when I rebuilt the head.. Turbo is the factory hx35 with 213k on it so id think its getting time to rebuild. 2. While sled pulling, in my Quad's datalogs I have found that the canbus fuel is dropping off a bit then back up to 4095. I don't have back downs, and throttle stayed at 100%. The green vertical bars are can…

First off let me say. I just had my transmission fluid change this summer. On my trip to Lewiston ID I had the Quadzilla on Level 2. I made it to the Casino outside of town and stop for a minute to grab a few things. Pulled back out on the highway rowed up through gear and it started clicking. WHAT?! Any gear had a very loud clicking noise even neutral as long as it rolling. I figure out pretty quick its was the input gear from the input shaft. Towed it home and pull the transmission. Yup you can twist the input and feel the gear is got broken teeth. NOTE: Remember the Quadzilla was on level 2 (stock fuel), fluid was just changed this summer and fresh and ful…

  8. Started by Stanley,

Gonna prolly go ahead and get the quadzilla for my rig. Does the kit come with all sensors needed for monitoring or are they purchased separately? Or do I even need them? Does it come with a display screen? Just Kinda confused on what you get and what you need. I think there is a few threads on how to tune once I get it. I'll prolly have to ask then what would be best with current setup.

  10. I noticed the line coming straight out of the vacuum pump on the fire wall side looks bad. Do any of you guys know the part number or replacement options? Thanks!

So I have a 01 cummins its pretty much stock other than I have a 62/68/12 with a quadzilla on level 4. I currently have the defueling setting set to 35 pounds because I am on stock bolts but I just learned that drive pressure also affects the head gasket and the ratio needs to be 1:1 correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've read. How do I figure out what that pressure is at and how do I fix it? In the future I do plan on doing 7x0.12 SAC injectors, DAP valve springs, Hamilton Extreme Duty pushrods, and ARP head studs. Whenever I go to do all this I also want to pull the head and get it surfaced and ringed if ringing is needed.

  12. Morning all, I've been having some issues with my daily tune for my Quadzilla. I have +50hp injectors that are 4 yrs/20k miles old and have had the Quad for about 2 years now. I can't seem to tune out the smoke In the 0-5 psi area on tip in acceleration. Cruising is clean and at 0-3 psi but anytime I'm hitting a small hill or pulling out onto a road and getting onto it there's a decent haze its not a black out but its enough to be confused/concerned about. It doesn't seem to clean up until 15ish psi. I don't know if pop pressure would be low or if my injectors are a bad set. Also I could have sworn I saw @dieselautopower mention that they updated their injecto…

  13. Well I pulled a small hill yesterday using a tune I wrote that brings the CAN BUS in pretty quickly on the Quad Adrenaline. This combined with Mach 4's (Flux 150 inj) think his 2700 ml/min is similar to most 7x.010's and saw 38 just barely rolling into the go pedal. I am guessing 38-40 lbs of boost would be the max for head gasket longevity? One surprise was that my EGT's are really reasonable at 900-1100. Seems like it starts barely slower vs RV275s like maybe one second on the key. Idles great. Also everyone talks about the sac nozzles being louder at idle but mine is slightly quieter. Thanks

Hello everyone I’m in search of a sled pulling tune. I have a 2000 vp44 truck has 200 over injectors .93 lines and tubes, hot rod vp44, aurora 4000 turbo, with a colt cam big stick backed by an nv4500. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Using the iQuad 4K V2.

  16. I am wondering if going up on pump stretch 2K ish and Can Bus % will create that low end response. I guess I can also make wire tap minimum add greater too? If I actually download load a Smarty tune will the truck act poorly even with the Adrenaline on level 0? Thanks

  19. INSTALLED SOME MANIFOLD STUDS AND AN ATS ONE PIECE EXHAUST MANIFOLD YESTERDAY ON MY 01 RAM AND NOTICED THAT THE NOTCHED AREAS OF THE HEAD WHERE YOU CAN TOUCH THE HEAD GASKET LOOK LIKE THEY ARE SEPARATING. I COULD NOT IDENTIFY A LEAK BUT I WAS CURIOUS IF THAT WAS TYPICAL AT 167K MILES? TRUCK HAS HEAD STUDS ALREADY AND I SEE NO SIGNS OF FUNCTIONAL GASKET FAILURE WITH OIL OR WATER LEAKS AT THE MOMENT. THANKS

  20. Started by LorenS,

Since this post is mostly about "getting to the next milestone", I'll stick it in this forum. In the not to distant future I plan to change out my A/C condenser and compressor. With the condenser coming out I plan to pull the radiator, intercooler (has bent mounting ears from Bambi damage) etc. and change the front seal while I'm there. What else is best done with everything out of the way? Perfect time for a cam, but don't know that I need one. Service the power steering? Vacuum pump overhaul, even if it doesn't need it yet? Timing cover gasket? I plan to have the truck down for a while, so I can make the list as lo…
