I'm starting this thread to keep track of everything I do to my new to me 2014 Ram 2500 Laramie.

I don't have plans to go crazy with it like I did the 2nd gen. The most it'll probably ever have is a mild towing tune and deletes.

How I bought it: 32K miles Completely stock engine trans. 50 gallon transferflow fuel tank in the bed, Air lift bags with in-cab controls, and a tri-fold tonneau cover.

Picture from the CL ad:

Pictures of the day I got it home:

Big difference between 96 and 2014

I did purchase the factory style in-bed gooseneck kit last week to pull the big trailers with. It's made by Kurt, and everything seems to fit and work as it should. I've put the truck to work right away as my 2nd gen is down at the moment. 2K in the bed there (bags at 20psi)

So from the pictures you can see I don't have the tractor sitting in the right spot. I was being lazy and didn't want to move the tractor after the ramps were up. The first thing I noticed is this truck easily stays level with the bags in the rear. I wouldn't be surprised if the tounge weight was around 3K+ with this load (trailer and tractor together were 13-14K)

It's very different towing with an auto - I've never done it with a larger trailer. The trans seemed fine with the load though. The truck has plenty of power in 1-5 even with 3.42 gears. In 6th at 70mph it is below 1500rpm, so I kept it in 5th.

The turbo spools wicked fast compared to the 2nd gen, although I can clearly feel when torque management is holding the truck back. The exhaust brake feature is awesome. I'm not sure if it works quite as well as an aftermarket one, but it held everything back pretty well.

So far I'm pleased with the purchase! If anyone has questions, ask away!

  • UDC vs warp, you can delete emissions with warp, and can not with UDC.

Imagine an elect. moded truck owned by Dieselfuture....He'd plug in at night and we wouldn't be able to see the front door to our own house with the amount of power draw. lol

I heard a rumor that the next generation of Cummin engines will not use DEF. This is all still rumor but I'm hopeful.

What I've seen so far from Cummins is the industrial applications not having an EGR. The "aftertreatment" system is HUGE though, and I don't think they could fit it under a pickup. Maybe a big truck, but even then it looks big. I don't see it coming for us yet.

Could you post up some pictures so I can get a better grasp of what you are talking about?

The off road mining / construction equipment industry is fighting this issue now trying to find places on the equipment for all of the emissions components but I have not seen any mfg talking about non Def system yet. I have read something a while back from Cummins own site where they are looking to design electric drive systems. Here are a couple news stories from Cummins site.

It's the 2019 industrial equipment that will be EGR free (Stage V)

Whether this stuff will make it to the US or not, I'm not sure.

Yeah I know others are ditching EGR as well but DEF is not going anywhere. Good Cummins is finding a way to reduce the size of the after treatment systems on the smaller engines. Be interesting to see what they come up with on the high HP end of the line.

Good on them for finding a way to eliminate the EGR!  Almost a throwback to the VP44 trucks that met the emissions standards of the time without a cat, or the late model, emission free 5.9's

The start/stop feature seems like it will bring some premature maintenance to items if the motor isn't properly cooled first.

Any updates on your new toy.

Nothing fun haha. The oil pan gasket is starting to leak worse. I'm trying to decide if I want to let the dealer fix it, or do it myself.

I have problems allowing people to work on my crap :shifty:

^Agree.  Warranty it.

The only reason I turned my back on warranty work was because the fact Dodge wanted to install the intank lift pump on my truck I told them NO! At that point I became my own warranty station.  It was also the start of Mopar1973Man.Com back in 2004.

Just the thought of some monkey under there messing with stuff bothers me. Will they break or bend something and not tell / fix it? Will they put the gasket in right? Will they just fill it with silicone and give it back? If I do it myself at least I'll know it's done right!

BTW the new pan gaskets are 4 piece, so it can be replace without pulling the whole pan / pickup tube out.

Whoops.  I misunderstood.  My bad.

Tell them you want to see the damaged parts. Tell them you want to see the pan after its removed or dropped. It's your privilege to make these demands if they are not will to comply find another dealer. I had a special understanding with the service manager and could get peeks at the work being done.

So real MPG isn't good towing.

30ft gooseneck weighing 7K on the way up and 11 or 12K on the way back. 250 miles and a whopping 11.49mpg.

You were expecting higher? That seems pretty good for the trailer.

use and abuse that warranty man.  Like Mike said, require to see the damaged parts, and the box/plastic for the new parts.
